I had done a search on Yelp for obscure things in the state of Massachusetts, and this came up. With only one Yelp review at the time, I was impressed that it even showed up on my search. Nonetheless, I was already in the area, so I figured I had to stop. The beads themselves are giant boulders chained together. If you go up the little hill by the prayer cave, you can see the "Rosary Beads" a little better from the vantage point (with the exception of some overgrown trees.) There is plenty of parking on-site, and the grounds appear to be taken care of. There is even a donation-based section where you can light a candle for someone. Even if you're not necessarily religious, it's worth the stop to walk the grounds and see what it's all about.

Old and unique…read more The Brayton Cemetery is also known as RI Historical Cemetery No. 34. It's a large graveyard with over 3,000 graves, some as early as the mid 1700s. Over a hundred Civil War veterans are buried here and most of their graves are marked. Several old family cemeteries from around the area have been moved here over the years and the cemetery is surrounded by a lovely stone wall. There are distant views of Apponaug Cove from the east side. The cemetery has lots of unique and very distinctive graves. Many have odd and interesting patterns and designs of stones placed around them. Not many very elaborate or huge memorials, most tend to be simple and some are just wooden crosses or plain stones. A historically important and fascinating old graveyard that contains a wonderful peek into the city of Warwick's past.

However, Samuel Slater's success at water-powered cotton spinning at Pawtucket in 1790 drew attention to the industrial development potential of the State's rivers and streams, and in the ensuing decades Rhode Island businessmen showed an eagerness to exploit available waterpower sources, even in relatively remote areas that had not been considered particularly favorable for settlement. I would recommend this after you read up on the Oakland Mill so you are better prepared for the ruins.

A beautiful addition to the city of Providence! Every time we visit, we would make a stop there…read more This bridge was renamed to the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge in 2020; it opened in August 2019. It was built on existing piers from the old highway, I-95. The bridge goes over the Providence River and connects two neighborhoods, Fox Point and the Jewelry District. There's a park nearby, called District 195; events are hosted at this location. The bridge was beautiful to walk on day and night. There were railings, benches, tables, and chess tables; at night there were LED lights that brighten the area. A wonderful area for walkers and cyclists. The view of the city skyline was breathtaking. One evening we were there, we saw the star-link satellite flying by, it was awesome. The downfall was, this bridge cost the city $21.9 million when the original budget was supposed to be $2 million. People were opposed with building this bridge because RI had the highest amount of bridges with structural issues. In the end, the bridge was built and it's become a popular attraction and landmark.

This is a beautiful marble dome and building in the Capitol Hill section of Providence…read more Many state offices are housed here such as the Governor's, Treasurer, House of Representatives, Senators, etc. They offer guided tours a few times a day (usually from 10a-3pm on weekdays) but you can also follow a self guided tour program and enjoy the inside of the building.

There are guided tours, but I didn't see any reference guides or pamphlets for self-guided tours. I didn't get to see inside every nook and cranny, but I did wander around and take some photos. My favorite touch is the Anchor adorning the floor of the elevator. Tres apropos for the Ocean State's State House.

Anyways, I decided to come here for the first time on a weekday afternoon and it was very pretty and peaceful, well maintained, and the perfect running distance for me. I parked on the street outside the carousel entrance of slater park, towards the Pawtucket country club which is where the trail splits. To my left was about half a mile of trail and to my left there was about 2.5 miles of trail. To the left there wasn't much to see, but there was a lot of green, so it was pretty. At the end of this chunk there is a big parking lot. To the right the trail does have more to see, especially since it cuts through slater park, there is a river, and even a dirt bike riding area. At the end of that is also a parking lot and a baseball field. The terrain is mostly flat but there are some tiny hills/slopes that can be challenging towards the end. I was able to see a red cardinal and a couple other birds.

The entire trail is 3 miles one-way. There are approximately 3 trailheads and 2 additional entry points.

Ready for an adventure kiddies? Then come to Fall River and see the aging ruins of the Old Fall…read moreRiver Ice House. But please, be discreet. Signs around the entryway state that fishing, boating, swimming and camping are strictly prohibited. But ever since I was a child I always wondered what the old Medieval looking ruin had to offer the not so faint of heart. Now as an adult literalist, I interpret the absence of a no trespassing order as something akin to an invitation. One side of the structure can be seen on the right while driving north on Route 24 coming from 195. Take exit 5 and follow Eastern Avenue then take a left onto New Boston Road. At the end, turn left onto Willow Street which turns into Ruth Street (over the freeway) and then Meridian Street (in a very short distance). Park on Hannah Street or Bergeron Street and then walk back toward whence you drove and go around the left of the fence across the road. What awaits you on the other side is a lonesome path long neglected over time. Weeds and trees flourish between cracks in the crumbling asphalt. Once past the noise from the street, an eerie quiet sets in. A short walk will lead you to the northern shores of the pond. Continue along and watch for the ruins on the right. Inside you will find excellent photo opportunities and a remarkable example of structural decay and a forest gradually reclaiming lost ground. Vines ensnare the surrounding trees and creep alongside the walls of the massive building. The colossal inner chambers are full of trees and enormous stones that have given way to time. Interesting exterior brickwork nestled among stones can be seen as one moves along the southern edge of the building closer to the shore. One wall bears the scar of what may have been a large lightning strike. Most of the walls have soaring vacancies in the stonework that may have once held windows or doors. Sadly, there is some graffiti, but it's a minor distraction in such an exciting place. After you've had your fill of the ruins, continue along the path and feel the eyes of the forest upon you. Low walls of stone accompany you throughout most of your journey and it would be difficult to get lost. Bear left when the path splits about a half mile after you've gone over the causeway (it can be difficult to discern) and you will eventually return to Meridian Street. Do NOT forget your camera!

I drove from Manhattan to West Warwick, RI a few days before the 20th anniversary of the tragic…read moreStation Nightclub Fire, to record photos and video for a project I created. This is the second time I've visited the memorial: I stopped by here briefly in 2021 as well. I personally had no connections to the victims of the tragedy, as I was a high school senior in Pennsylvania in February 2003 - and I also didn't hear about the fire until after it occurred. Nonetheless, I've always been fascinated at the terrible event which took place on that fatal night in 2003, and wanted to visit the aftermath myself. The park is very simple in its appearance: upon entering the threshold, you're given multiple paths to walk upon, which have markers on the ground to commemorate the victims of the fire. In the center of each module of markers are circular concrete tables embossed with designs of 45 record spindle inserts. At the back of the memorial is a small pavilion with a full timeline of the tragedy, as well as key facts about similar nightclub tragedies such as Cocoanut Grove in Massachusetts. During my visit, I spoke with a man who informed me that he was an emergency room worker on the night of the disaster, and that his hospital was overwhelmed with injured patients to the surprise of the other hospital workers. Even if you have no immediate friends or family involved with the disaster, I recommend you stop by and pay respects. The park is usually quiet during the day, and is located off a main road which is relatively near Interstate 95.

Quick note: the park includes a small parking area and there is a sensor at the entrance that turns…read moreon a light in the pavilion. This light is on a timer, so if it goes off, you will need to walk through the entrance again to turn it back on. People around the world know of the Station Night Club Fire. It's lessons are taught in fire districts throughout the U.S. For years family members have been working to create a memorial to those who lost their lives. Finally the park is completed and I believe it is a fitting tribute. There were many considerations that had to be taken into account when creating this park, not the least of which is the requirements by the state that the park be easily maintained. This park truly gives the aura of a holy place. A place of remembrance. It memorializes each person who lost their lives while out for an evening of enjoyment with friends. Every person has a head stone. Most with a photo, making the loss, of all their futures held, poignant. The pavilion at the back includes a time line. Reading top to bottom, left to right, it describes the history of the building - for example how originally the capacity of the building was about 50 people, and over time how that changed. The events of the fire are recounted starting before the band began to play. It recounts how some people made it out safely, couldn't find their friends, and returned to help them out, never to make it out again. So much heroism. Such sadness. I hope you will visit this memorial. Pay your respects to the departed. Appreciate how one moment can change your life and remember to be thankful for every small thing. No matter how small.
