Eldie's Marine has been taking care of our boat for the last 15 plus years. Eldies pulls the boat from the water and stores it for the winter along with winterizing the engine and putting it back in the water in the spring. Eldie owns the shop and his son Justin and daughter Kirsten work at the business which makes them a great team because they are a very close family. When I am in Galena I love to go fishing so my boat is very important to me. The one thing I greatly admire about Eldies is they do excellent work and I know I can absolutely 100% trust them. Eldie recently helped me get a new trolling motor as mine was outdated and not functional. Eldie had a boat owner looking to sell his trolling motor which was almost brand new and truly state of the art. Eldie was able to get me a great deal on the trolling motor so I bought it and Eldies son Justin and staff member Mason rewired the boat and did an excellent job of installing the motor which is so simple to operate. If you need work on your boat in the Galena or Dubuque area, Eldies should be your first stop. They do outstanding, reliable work and I know they are going to tell me the truth and give me options to resolve the problem. The name is this place is spelled Eldy's Salon not Eldi. I've been coming here for about 12 years since I was a teenager. My mom's friend owns the place so my opinion may be a little bias but they do quality work nonetheless. I used to sport long hair and I used to get it trimmed here. After I cut off my hair I went here to get lined up and they still delivered results. Eldy is very friendly and the staff is very accommodating. Few of the workers speak English but they all seem to enjoy working there which is a huge plus. Eldy a few years back purchased or leased the adjoining business and expanded her salon but has recently scaled it back to it's original size. The fact that the business has been around this long says a lot. Mostly everyone who goes here is Spanish and the place should have a sign that says "We speak English too." However, over the years I have seen the clientele change as more and more white people go there so that's good! All in all, it is a place I'd recommend going. read more

So I moved to the Mission about 7 months ago, and I've been going to the same barber for over ten years now in the Ingleside District, SF ... but it takes me about an hour on the bus to get there now that I moved. Eldy's is less than half a block away from me, and today was the day I finally decided to try and venture somewhere new and more convenient. It's hard to switch barbers, and I like my old one a lot, even on a personal level, and I was very nervous about the change .... but boy am I happy!!! The shop had three woman cutting hair today, and I like to get my hair cut short, a half on the sides and faded up to a five on top. I admit I am skeptical about a woman fading short hair, but they did a great job. They were patient and very nice. At first, the cut wasn't quite what I wanted, because they had never cut my hair before and didn't know. I explained I wanted it shorter on the sides (better start long and adjust short) and for the fade to break at a certain point. I felt bad asking for the adjustment, since she'd have to redo the blend all the way around, but they were genuinely happy to fix it and I did not feel rushed at all. Eldy understood exactly how I wanted it changed and delivered a haircut I must admit I liked more than my old barbers!!! I moved to the Mission 12 months ago and immediately started trying out local barbers. Never been a big believer in paying more than $20 for a haircut, mostly because the marginal benefit of anything north of a twenty rarely outweighs the cost. I mean, let's face it, who needs the fancy lotions and sharp-tongued hipster to make you think it's worth the extra dough? I settled on Eldy's Beauty Salon for three reasons: 1) Price. It's $15 for the trim and I usually tip them $5 resulting in one crisp $20 bill exchanging hands. Given the strong supply of barbers in the district, you can afford to be a price maker. 2) Openness to direction. There's two lovely ladies in the salon, I am more partial to the younger one. Mainly due to the rapport we've managed to kindle in a short space of time. And she's got game. But as a whole, you can feel comfortable giving them direct feedback as to how you would like your hair cut and they kindly oblige. No attitude, no pointing to their diplomas on the wall, no referencing their years of experience plying their trade. They just aim to meet or exceed your expectations. 3) Community values. I usually pop in for a quick snip on a Saturday. Never ceases to amaze me how many local members of the community poke their head in and say hi. Young kids with basketballs under their scrawny arms, elderly women (who I assume are regular patrons of the salon) with their Zimmer frames, and busy motorists offer a courteous honk of their horn and friendly wave as they drive past. There was even some guy who they let barbecue an entire pig on a spit for an afternoon. You can tell these ladies have clout and it feels good to feel a part of the action, albeit for a short window of time. Remember when you would hang with your older cousins at Christmas time and just walk that bit taller? Well, Eldy's will have that effect on you. I wouldn't listen to the haters in some of these reviews. Haters are gonna hate. Take the $20 risk, offer direct feedback and give them a try. Onwards. read more

Great basic guy's cut, with incredible attention to detail and friendly easy owners. I went on a weekday afternoon around four and didn't have to wait at all, no appointment. Cut took little longer than a fancy salon cut, but only b/c she was more careful and paid attention to detail and asked for my feedback the whole way. Cut was $15 and I tipped another $10 b/c I'm so used to getting haircuts that aren't as good and cost literally 3x or 4x more money at salons. read more

I've been driving all the way from East Bay to San Francisco just for a haircut at Eldy's. I definitely recommend Eldy's to anyone. I used to get $60 haircuts from Caucasians with attitude. Some of them were very good; other times I could tell my head was in the way of their appointment with a nice nap. Plus if you didn't fork over more than a $10 tip, they looked at you like they discovered you cut their meth with baby powder. And I also foraged in the Mission sometimes for cheap haircuts, but usually they had the feeling of my head being a lawn to be trimmed with a power mower. Eldy's is the best semi-cheap haircut place I've ever found. They take care on your haircut and give little additional touches, like trimming your eyebrows. The cuts vary depending on which woman does your hair, but two of the three I've had were very good. Compared to the $60 haircuts, I'd say that they lack the high end: a good $60 haircut can be outstanding. But my experience was that I only got one of those outstanding cuts about 30% of the time, even going back to the same stylist. Eldy's is just as good as the other 70% of those $60 haircuts. Plus a haircut at Eldy's is, as of this writing, $15. And if you give her a $3 tip, she doesn't look like she wants to choke you with it. In sum: I feel a lot better about going to Eldy's, getting my hair cut there, and giving them my business, which they seem to genuinely appreciate. read more
