When the young woman finished, the guy who I'm assuming owns the salon, said the hairstyle is $160. I told him that's not what I was quoted via TEXT when I asked for clear pricing, and I didn't feel comfortable paying a significantly higher price than what I was quoted. If the price for the style was misquoted, that should have been made clear before the stylist started. In the end, he asked me to pay 120 and I agreed just to avoid confrontation or conflict as I was by myself in the salon with only three stylist and the owner had locked us all inside. In addition, when I got home, I looked online at their Booksy website. the style I wanted was actually discounted so they tried to charge me full price for a hairstyle that was actually discounted online. The hairstyle is very nice, lovely in fact, but I would not recommend this place to anyone. It feels terrible when people who look like you, try to get over on you.

Several weeks ago I went in for a flat twist up-do on my natural hair, which measures about eight inches when stretched. After a year of maintaining my hair without the help of a salon (I BC'd in June '11) I decided to give a "professional" the opportunity to style my mane. When I sat down in my stylist's chair (I won't mention her name here), I felt confident my hair was in good hands. Her fro looked well moisturized, had a nice shape, and her edges were full. Before she did anything she gave me a quick consultation...this is when the red flags should have popped up. I told her what products I use regularly (kinky-curly, aubrey organics, shea moisture, ect). She boldly put down all the products I mentioned, and instead endorsed the salon's products. This was off putting because 1) My hair responds well to what I use, and I have no intention of changing them and 2) It was obvious she was just trying to make an extra buck. After her endorsement, she decided to go ahead and criticize my hair. First, she didn't like how I had prepared my hair ahead of time (wash, condition, detangle, and blow dry). I wanted to do this myself because I'm selective about the products I use and because I don't like anyone ripping through my hair unnecessarily. She told me she wished I had let the her give me the "full oxsun meji experience." Even though I explained my reasonings for wanting to prep my hair beforehand she kept repeating the same thing to me. I even counted...she mentioned this eight times total. Damn. I understand that everyone is struggling right now but I don't need to feel like I'm obligated to spend money for services I can just do at home. To top this whole thing off, she explained that my hair wasn't blown out well enough and that she would need to go over it a second time. I asked her if she had a heat protectant. She had the audacity to tell me I didn't need one because since I don't blow dry my hair often, my hair wouldn't be damaged after doing it one time. REALLY THOUGH? Where is she getting her information from? The only reason I let her proceed at that point was because I just really wanted to get my hair styled for an event that night. I knew it was too late to make an appointment anywhere else and I didn't have time to do it myself. In the end, my hair did end up looking nice. The flat twists were neatly done and weren't done tightly (I am tenderheaded, so this was a plus for me). Also, the salon is really clean and has a relaxing zen like vibe. I'd also like to add that the owner is very talented with locing and loc maintenance. So she's definitely worth a try if you wear locs. Otherwise go elsewhere (are there ANY good natural hair salons in Phili for non loc wearers? Yelp says no. I'm pretty certain of it too). Or just step up your style game. Sigh...guess I'll be wasting a lot more time than I already do on YouTube and Curlynikki.

I did my research and I wanted a salon that specialized in Natural Hair specifically one that doesn't have a problem dying it as well. I found Oxsun through its website and it seemed like a promising fit. I went in just wanting to get my at home dye job revamped because quite frankly it looked like I dyed it at home. The first thing I liked was the consultation anyone who asking me individual questions about my hair before using product on it makes me more comfortable that I am getting the experience I need and not just the one I wanted. After telling her that I was only a year and some change natural (BC 06/4/12) she made recommendations that made sense for me. We setup a deep conditioning, my ends being clipped, and I got my first twist out. The environment was great everyone was friendly and I felt like I was amongst family with interest i got lots of helpful tips for my hair and didn't feel forced persuaded to buy anything I didn't want to. The service was fairly priced and I did make an appointment to return again as I think this is where I will go for my hair maintenance from this point forward. I actually made an appointment through email since they are closed on Sunday/Monday and I wasn't able to call to make an appointment. They were able to fit me in on Tuesday at 5:30 right after work, which was perfect. The salon is very clean, neat, and chic. When you walk in, you are offered wine or water. :) I opted for the first-time guest wash, cut, dry for $30 (which is a steal!). Kim was my stylist and she did a bang up job on my long, thick, Asian hair! She was so sweet and professional. I asked to take off about 5 inches, angles in front, and texturize at the end and it came out perfect! My hair is back to life! When I left, I was given Kim's hours and a few coupons for future visits. I will definitely be returning. It was such a wonderful experience. I feel like a new person!
