I went into the hair salon today and I asked for layers around the face. I asked her bangs to be around my face not box bangs did not straighten my hair properly left my hair frizzy as hell it was just cheap service. I wanted to get my hair dyed red but it was $280 plus tip seem to much for me. I'm sorry just to do my hair they wanna charge 280 I might as well just buy a wig the young lady was kind, but could not do my hair properly. My hair was frizzy when it was done and my haircut was not supposed to be the way she did it .everything I asked for I did not get so I will not be going back to this hair salon ever again. I have lived in Philly for 9 years and still haven't found a styilist, so I hopped and Yelp for some direction. I grew my hair out super long for my wedding and basically didn't get it cut for 2 years, needless to say it was long, damaged, and ratty looking. Enter: Ovations. I actually made an appointment through email since they are closed on Sunday/Monday and I wasn't able to call to make an appointment. They were able to fit me in on Tuesday at 5:30 right after work, which was perfect. The salon is very clean, neat, and chic. When you walk in, you are offered wine or water. :) I opted for the first-time guest wash, cut, dry for $30 (which is a steal!). Kim was my stylist and she did a bang up job on my long, thick, Asian hair! She was so sweet and professional. I asked to take off about 5 inches, angles in front, and texturize at the end and it came out perfect! My hair is back to life! When I left, I was given Kim's hours and a few coupons for future visits. I will definitely be returning. It was such a wonderful experience. I feel like a new person! read more

Solid haircut! Came in with a Groupon for cut and conditioning treatment ($35). I was paired with Kim who was beyond friendly and an excellent stylist! To be fair, my haircut is basically straight across the bottom, no layers or anything fancy. I really liked the conditioning treatment but I feel like this is something I could do at home. It alone costs $20 and it's just a Redken mask that is sold for ~$30 a bottle. It's okay that it was included in the groupon but I don't think I'd pay for it separately. Kim did and excellent blow dry as well. I'm terrible at getting my hair smooth with a blow dryer but it looked awesome after she was done. She also used a Milkshake leave in conditioner that smelled fantastic. I definitely need to pick it up! Everything was clean and I felt comfortable. You will most likely be offered a drink of wine or water. I declined so I can't comment on the quality but I'm sure it's nice. The search for a hair stylist when you move to a new city is a challenge. As black woman with naturally curly hair, this is even more of a challenge. I rarely find people who know how to cut my hair, are comfortable working with it, or don't push me to get a perm since I have so much hair. So based on maia's yelp review I decided to check it out. I made an appointment with Jen, and she was amazing! Well, everyone was great in the shop. They were super friendly, the space is very nice, and everyone was so attentive. Jen was really informed about cutting hair, and when I told her what I needed she walked me through what she was going to do. She also did not hesitate to get all up in my hair (which I have found some other stylists tended to do). She used great products, gave me some styling tips and an adorable style. I will definitely go back to her. It was uber affordable too, just $50. And they give you wine! Hooray! read more

Okay, so it is a trek from Center City but you won't be disappointed (especially with the free street parking!). On the day of my appointment I was beginning my hunt for best Philly waxer. The first floor is dedicated to a modern hair salon, while the upstairs is the spa. I waiting upstairs and was pleasantly surprised with the scope an professionalism of the spa's offerings: a waiting area with fireplace and tea and coffee bar. If you are hear for the dreading bikini wax, get an appointment with Kathy; she is the reason this place gets five stars. She is gentle, kind and has a few tricks up her sleeve that will make the process more painless than you expected. (Unfortunately, she let me know she'd rather I not share her secret). This is the one of two places I will ever get a bikini wax. I suggest you do the same. read more

When living in a city you need to come to grips with a few select aspects of life...(1) dinner out will almost never cost less than $20...(2) parking will almost always cost more than the money put in the meter, simply because a meter maid will always beat you to replenishment by tacking a $20+ ticket on your windshield...(3) a good haircut by a knowledgeable hair stylist will more often than not cost you one full day of wages, and that's before you tip. Fortunately for myself, right around the time I thought about joining Yelp, I noticed that Ovations was running a spring special (which they still are, so hurry and get in on the action before it's gone) for a wash, cut, and style...only $30! How can you pass that up? I mean, for $30 would you really rather spin the wheel on who will butcher you at the Chop Shop? I'm a bit of a hair-whore, hardly ever having my hair cut at the same place twice, but this place is worth giving a second visit. I have curly hair, like the kind that grows like a chia-pet in humidity and almost never does what I'd like it to even when the weather is nice, so the first thing I did when making my appointment was ask if they had someone that specializes in curly haircutting. I was set up with an appointment for the next morning with Stacey who is super nice and a proud owner of a curly mane herself. There's nothing better than the security of having someone with curly hair, cut your own curly hair. She listened to my tales of horror-haircuts-past and walked me through what she thought would help to shape me up. She listened when I told her the types of products that I typically used and she took what I said to heart as she gave me a cut that didn't break the bank and didn't feel over-processed with product like some salons do. I still love my salon back home in North Jersey, but at least I know that I have a backup here in Philadelphia for when I can't get up there. P.S. When i think of NoLibs i think of a haven for hipsters and the places they love (places that serve PBR, stores that sell Toms and Flannel Shirts). Ovations is actually an oasis in NoLibs that i have fallen in love with. Walking into this salon/spa I was greeted by Lisa. Lisa walked me up the stairs to the waiting area for spa services and provided me with a beverage of course i chose wine (why the hell not) She advised that Moe was going to be doing my facial and shed be with me in a few minutes. The waiting area is super cute and very comfortable. Its very white and clean but the lights are kept very dim as to not send your eyes into shock. Ladies (and Gents ) MOE knows ! I had the best facial today Moe is esthetician extraordinaire and LOVES helping people achieve the beautiful skin they so rightfully deserve. After a brief run down of my skin, my facial started with a gentle cleanse .At each step of the facial she explained what she was doing and why, what products she likes/dislikes and some great pointers for keeping up with my skin. I tend to ask a lot of questions and felt extremely comfortable talking with her. No one likes extractions but she did an amazing job of making me relaxed and i honestly felt only a few pinches which usually never happens. My facial ran over a bit ( probably because of all my questions ) but Moe offered me samples of the products she used and didn't push sales on me which i really appreciate. After having such a great afternoon i decided that a quarterly facial won't break my purse strings and my face will probably thank me. I was lured in by the special first-timer deal and the numerous positive Yelp reviews. It had been something like 10 months since my last haircut - a testament to how terrified I am of the whole process. Anne did a great job of quelling my anxiety and I was very happy when I left. The place is a little weird to get to (or maybe because I took the subway) and doesn't have that intimidating, extreme interior decorator feel with loud colors and brushed aluminum. Or whatever. I was offered an alcoholic beverage so +10 points because even if i weren't freaking out, it is a wonderful little extra that more places should offer. Anne was sweet, accommodating, friendly, and sure-handed. She answered all my styling questions about what to do with my impervious-to-tools-and-products Asian hair. Ovations is great because its easy to get an appointment there, the atmosphere and service is wonderful, it's affordable, and you leave looking FAB. I have had keratin treatments as well and I swear they last longer from Lauren then from any other place I've been too! Me and my roommate Dave struck up a conversation with Jay, who is a server at Swanky Bubbles and a hair stylist at Ovation. After Swanky Bubbles closed down, Jay, who is always ready for the spontaneous hair cut, offered to give Dave a legitimate philly doo in our apartment right next door. He spent over an hour on Dave and gave him a firstclass hair cut at 3am in the morning. I am so disappointed and so sad...I left the salon without saying anything just thank you because I d not even know how to address the situation. It was my first time even going there I wanted something very very simple. They didn't deliver and they still charged me so much . For just bleaching my hair. Which it didn't even come up to color. He knows exactly what is doing, is very personable, and quite funny. I've found my new stylist! As for hte rest of the salon: everyone there was so nice to me, they understood that i was late due to a last minute work issue and the train on top of that. They offered me some (much needed because of sweltering Philly summer heat) cold water as soon as i walked in. It was super clean, very well designed and the staff was professional. The salon is lovely inside. The staff was VERY professional...EXCEPT for the person that did my hair. He was 30 minutes late, then proceeded to tell me about how he was sick. Okay....great....so glad to hear you are sick and about to spend the next 3 hours around my head. He seemed like he didn't belong there...a much lower level of professionalism, however he said he's been working there 10 yrs. He offered to get me a drink (a standard service here) and I asked for coffee. He never brought it, and I had to ask for it again an hour later. HOWEVER, my hair color looks great!! He styled my hair too, but I was underwowed. For almost $200, I better look like I'm about to walk the red carpet. I had to ask him to do something with my bangs because they were a mess. Anyhow, the color truly makes me happy and has lasted well, and I was there a month ago. I will go back, but would prefer a different hairdresser next time. read more

Richard (the owner) is just awesome! He's cut my hair twice since I moved to Philly and he does a great job with my unruly mane. I have long curly hair that I've been growing out. I had a period when I was straightening my hair daily and was guilty of a little too much flatironing. Growing the damage out has been quite a process, but Richard does a great job keeping as much length as possible and cleaning things up when I can get in for a trim. If you have curly hair, you know how scary it is to try a new stylist. Getting a typical straight hair type cut just doesn't work and many stylists don't know what they are doing. Richard is different - he's very skilled and I feel at complete ease in his chair. He has styled my hair both curly and straight and both times it has looked great walking out the door! The staff here is very sweet as well. The first time I went to Ovations, my taxi driver made a wrong turn and I ended up on a 30minute tour of New Jersey's most industrial hot spots. I gave the salon a call and they were kind enough to keep my appointment. Not only that, but when I arrived, they were more worried about my wellbeing than my tardiness and gave me a glass of wine to ease my nerves! I've found my new salon for sure. After having a truly horrifying and painful experience at Fringe Salon (see my review for further details) in May, I finally tried Ovations Salon. My coworkers had all been raving about the fantastic cuts and friendly staff but I didn't really believe them until I went and tried it for myself and completely fell in love. Lauren (you should ask for her) has now been cutting my hair for three months and making me look- dare I say it - fabulous. I have super thick, frizzy, colored, curly hair which requires a stylist of considerable skill (like Lauren) who really knows what they're doing and who truly cares about their work. Lauren has helped me nurse my dry, over-processed hair back in to peak condition, and often gives me tips on the best ways to style and care for it. I also feel that it's worth mentioning how friendly the rest of the staff are. When you walk in to the salon, you will always be greeted with a smile, as well as a delicious treat and some cold water. The salon has that friendly-yet-trendy boutique vibe and, if you're a regular, it's the kind of place where they will know you by name. Once when I was woefully late for an appointment they called me, not to scold me, but because they were genuinely concerned for my wellbeing. I finally feel as though I have the kind of great relationship with my stylist and salon that I had always wanted. Thank you, Ovations, for being everything that I need. Well, I got the best (and most painless) cut of my life today, and I have Richard at Ovations to thank for that. Exaggeration? I think not! This charming and down-to-earth man turned my neglected, grown-out mullet of a former pixie cut into a fantastically chic bob that made me feel like a rock star. He was extremely attentive to the fact that I wanted it to grow out evenly and didn't want to remove length, but also managed to give me something very fun to work with while I let my tresses become...well, "tresses" again. I didn't get to see very much of the space itself, but the front of the salon was very cozy, and I was offered a hot beverage. The lovely lady running the front desk was so on her game -- extremely professional and sweet. I felt like an important customer, and not like an inconvenience, like I have in so many other salons. I am lamenting the fact that I will have probably moved out of town by the time I need my next cut, because this would be MY PLACE for years to come. I called in a panic. My original plan to get my hair cut and blown out on the way home from my parents' house in NJ was a bust -- Hurricane Sandy had closed just about everything. On a normal day, I'd just pick up and move on, split ends be damned. But there was that little thing called my engagement photoshoot to worry about. I had two hours to get home to Philly and look pretty. Thankfully, the women at Ovations Salon & Spa were not only able to help me, they were genuine, welcoming and so very accommodating on such short notice. Had I realized this lovely little salon was just steps away from my apartment (the entrance is a bit hidden between third and fourth streets along Spring Garden), I would have been coming here for months. My stylist was efficient, friendly and made me feel beautiful and calm. She even offered me a drink of coffee, tea or wine while she worked. My scalp was massaged and pampered and the stylist demonstrated what she was doing along the way so I could try replicating the blow dry style at home. I'm so thrilled with my hair and even got three whole days out of the blow-out. For first timers, there's a special that a wash, cut and style is $30 (otherwise it's $50). Can't wait to book appointments for my bridal party here. They say first impressions are everything, and Ovations certainly won me over. read more

Came here on a visit to Philadelphia and used the Groupon Now deal for a $30 haircut (with wash and styling) which is worth $50. They actually have a deal for first time customers for the same deal. The receptionist was super friendly and offered me water, tea or coffee. They had lots of magazines to look at including People magazine. They did not have any of those haircut magazines though so make sure you have an idea of what you want. Anne took a lot of time with me, about an hour for wash, cut, and blow-dry. She really spent time to make sure the shape of my haircut was just right. I initially was slightly worried because I think Anne is one of the newer employees at the salon. Anne was super thorough and cut my hair exactly how I wanted. She kept checking in to make sure she was cutting it the right length. There's actually a deal for a haircut and highlights done by Anne or Lauren for free! I did not want highlights but if I did, this deal would be great! You can't get just a haircut, you have to get both a haircut and highlights. Good salon! After washing the hair after my haircut, my only complaint is my bangs were more uneven than I wanted them to be. read more

I live right around the corner, so I come here for facials regularly. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxing and I feel like their facials are priced perfectly for what you get. When you walk in, the salon is on the main floor and they have the spa upstairs where its quite and ambient. The astheticians are kind and make sure you have filled out a skin care form (or make sure yours is up to date). I know of other places to get cheap facials (like Chinatown) but considering I keep going back to ovations, I guess that says something about the place. Highly recommended! read more

Ok, so I am typically a barber kind of guy, but my normal barber was on vacation so I needed to find somewhere close and quick. I was able to get an appointment within 30 minutes of me calling. Upon walking in I could immediately tell this place was high-end. The owner did a great job decorating and the ambiance is superb. The girl who cut my hair did a great job for a buzz cut. I absolutely canNOT say enough good things about Richard and his crew at Ovations. I've been going to this salon since I moved to Philly in 2002. I dragged my feet for quite sometime as I'm particular about people who cut my hair, but after the fourth or fifth recommendation I booked my first appointment with Richard. Obviously, I've never looked back. Being once of those people who are blessed/cursed with a thick mass of wavy (sometimes curly) hair, I've had my fair share of bad experiences at salons. I've never been unhappy with any of the services I've had at Ovations, however. Whether its a basic shampoo and cut, waxing, or coloring, I've encountered nothing but attentive and easy going professionals at this salon. They're serious about getting you what you want and they make your comfort a point of pride. Richard even did my wedding hair (a rather specific and time-intensive up-do) for much less than every other quote I had been given. Lisa (who generally runs their front desk) was patient and accommodating to me, my mother and my entire bridal party. I really can't recommend this salon enough and its good to know that there are others in this city who wholeheartedly agree with me. Go there. Try it for yourself. read more

I walked in without an appointment and was immediately greeted by a wonderful lady at the desk (sorry, don't remember your name). She said it would be no problem to get taken care of, and it would just be a 20 minute wait. 20 minutes later, I was greeted by Stacy. Stacy was nice, professional, and did an amazing job with my hair. Here's what blew me away -- Stacy said she's been with Ovations for about 20 years. I think that says a lot about a person and a company, especially in that industry. I'm new to Philly and Ovations is my place now and would recommend them to anybody. This spa is a not so easy to spot while walking or driving around, so I hadn't known about it. I looked up spas for a massage at the last minute today and found this was very close to my condo. I ended up totally changing my mind and getting a full leg and bikini wax. I have ben charged over $100 just for full legs elsewhere, and here I paid $60. First off, they took me w 30 mins notice. Secondly, the spa treatment area is beautiful and serene. Carla provided my service- she was super friendly, super fast and very professional. The wax they use does not hurt your skin, so I was surprised that any discomfort was very mild. Lisa at the front desk is especially helpful, and I recommend this secret spa to anyone. read more

I had 2 others 1 pretty good and the other was eh... but Jen is awesome and so is Richard. Atmosphere is not pretentious despite the high profile and uppity style.... I love this place! The prices are a little more than I'd like to spend (had to give it a 4/4.5 for this reason), but are fairly typical for the city and well worth it in the end. For first time visitors, you get a special deal on your first visit and a coupon book that has some savings for various salon offerings (hair services, waxes and products if I recall correctly). I've been going to Lauren for about a year now and have nothing but great things to say about her as a stylist. She took my hair from a mess of a DIY dye job to beautifully dyed dark and then later highlighted this past year. She's friendly, helpful with ideas, and has become my go-to stylist after a few flops since moving to the area and a hard follow-up of the same stylist back home for 7 years. Lauren even did my hair for my wedding this past summer. She was able to take what I was looking for, both from the pictures I brought in and my descriptions, and make my dream a reality. It looked gorgeous in the pictures and held up through the heat wave in July. Dee/Deanna also did my makeup for the wedding and it looked AMAZING. After having a not-so-great result from a makeup artist in the Philly MAC store, I was so pleased and excited to stumble upon Dee, who also uses MAC products. I will definitely go back to her for any future formal events (or a special night on the town) where I want to look my best. The staff is great, receptionist is warm and welcoming, the entire salon is extremely clean and well-kept, and the decorations give the place a chic but cozy feeling. This salon is great! I live in NJ and I come over the bridge just to get my hair cut and colored by Lauren. She is a great, young, fun, stylist and she is so talented. I received the best haircut I've had in years from Anne this week. The receptionist was beyond sweet and helped accomodate my appointment with my tight work schedule.
