St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church - Beautiful Architecture, Deeply Disappointing Liturgy…read more This is a stunning historic Catholic church in Missoula, Montana. The interior frescoes, painted by Jesuit Brother Joseph Carignano, rival those found in many European churches--a rare and impressive feat in the United States. The architecture and artwork alone make it worth a visit. My husband and I stopped here while traveling through Montana and attended Mass on August 23, 2025. We regularly attend a traditional parish in Florida, so we were especially struck by the contrast. During the homily, the priest delivered a lengthy and highly partisan diatribe against Donald Trump, focusing on his efforts to address illegal immigration. The remarks were overtly political and deeply offensive to us. The overall celebration of the Mass was one of the most irreverent and careless I have ever witnessed. The priest remained seated for much of the liturgy. He distributed the Eucharist to the Extraordinary Ministers well before the proper time, treating them as if they were concelebrating priests. Most shockingly, immediately after the Consecration, he was seen joking and laughing with the deacon at the altar. The lack of reverence for the Mass and the Blessed Sacrament was inexcusable. What we experienced felt like blasphemy. I can only imagine what this congregation--composed largely of elderly parishioners is hearing in the homilies now. As visitors seeking a reverent celebration of the Traditional Faith, we were profoundly saddened.
