I've gotten a couple of acupuncture treatments at Grassroots (with/from Marit), and... well, I've definitely been enjoying the unique experience. Grassroots has a sliding scale ($15-35) fee and they want you to come in as much as you need to and feel better. There is not as much one-on-one interaction as I'd imagine you'd get on a more expensive appointment at a clinic that doesn't offer "community acupuncture," but you can always schedule a time to talk and you do get a chance to check in before the needles go in. So the "big thing" that has kept me from trying it for many years is: Fear of pain and needles. Was it a worthwhile worry? Not really. I think it feels like a pinch when they're inserted, but that doesn't last longer than a couple seconds. Some areas are more sensitive than others. I did have a weird experience the first time where the needle in my left hand (near thumb) felt like a shot of pain went through my palm and then a hot marble rolled around in the skin of my palm for a little while... but that went away within about a minute. And it was kind of cool in a weird kind of way. Wondering what all happens when it comes to an appointment? 1. Go to their website and set up a first appointment with their handy online scheduling system. (Please note that there's a $10 processing fee for the first appt, so the scale for that day is $25-45.) 2. Come in with paperwork filled out or fill it out there. Chat with the practitioner for a little while and then head into the treatment room. For return visits you can either hand money to the practitioner at the desk or (if they're not there) make/grab a small orange envelope with your name on it (sitting on desk) and deposit the payment (cash or check, let them know if you need change) in the black comments box near the restroom before heading into the treatment room. (I do believe they also accept insurance.) 3. Choose one of the 8 cozy recliners in a big room separated into two sections (by a curtain). Put your shoes, coat, purse, etc in the basket next to your recliner. Roll up your pants so the leg up to the knee is exposed. Recline. Relax. Wait a moment for the practitioner to arrive and/or finish helping another patient. 4. Talk to the practitioner (quietly) about what aches you, your current stress level, bowel movements, etc. This information helps them learn how you're doing and where to put the needles. 5. Relax and... experience. They ask you if you need to be "woken" at a particular time and, if you don't, you can be there as long as you need to (as long as they're open, of course). Apparently some people feel "done" pretty quickly. My experience so far is that I start feeling either drunk/dizzy or like waves of heat/energy are washing through me, and... pass out. About 1-1.5 hours later I wake up and am ready to go, go, go! 6. Catch the practitioners eyes and attempt an "I'm cooked, please take them out now" look. They briefly check in with you as they remove the needles. 7. Go eat some dinner or space out for several hours or whatever! I believe Marit said it's normal for blood sugar to drop during/after the session, so make sure you have some food or a good beverage or something after your treatment. So far I find myself to be in something of a daze for a few hours after. I'm not sure what kind of lasting benefits I have received from acupuncture, but my shoulders do feel a lot more loose today than they did yesterday. It feels good. I also like the experience and like the place I'm in after, so I definitely plan to go back for more. A unique thing about Grassroots is that they're a community acupuncture location. I didn't know what that meant at first - but (for other n00bs) it means you'll be seen at the same time as others. At first I was thinking nail salon where you're only being partially paid attention to. This is not the case at all. There are two adjoining rooms with 4 recliners in each. You pick a seat and one of the acupuncturists comes to talk with you. You tell them everything that's wrong with you. really, everything. From, you're depressed to your shoulder aching and they'll determine where to stick you. The actual poking part is hardly an issue. Most of the times I can't really tell that a needle actually went into my skin, it just feels like a gentle tap. They're really good about hitting however many points you need in a visit. After your consultation and poking, you relax (or take a nap) for however long you can/want to be there. My first visit I was there for 2 hours before I woke up (feeling AWESOME). Each time since then I've given them a time limit because I should do other stuff than nap. The price here is ridiculously reasonable. It's a trust-based system. Pay what you can (between $15-30) and get treated. I love the sense of community and well being here. I definitely recommend coming here whether you're new to acupuncture or have been doing it for years.

And a really fun aspect of a visit is the nature trail around the 100+ yr. old schoolhouse next door. The staff keep the trail well groomed as a country garden. It is beautiful! There is a hive of honeybees in one wall of the old schoolhouse, so you have the pleasant hum of contented bees as you walk the trail. There is also a nice outside fountain and chairs adjacent to the waiting room. A wonderful atmosphere!

I have never been seen by this doctor before, but this hospital should retain his services as he was attentive and cared about helping me. I live with chronic pain in my lung due to past P.E.'s lobectomy, and so many surgeries and procedures, and the last few experiences I was treated like a junky looking for a fix, even though they can see my history. In the past they did not listen to me as far as what helps me with my pain and by difficulty breathing. I only go if it has been out of control for a few days or more and keeps me from even getting any sleep. As I have been dealing with this for over a decade, I know what helps and what doesn't, but by telling them what helps, they have treated me like a junky and not given me the care I need to relieve my pain. For the first time I saw somebody that listened and reviewed my history and who's main goal was to help me breathe better and get out of/reduce my pain so I could finally get much needed rest. Dr Vance Rothmeyer was outstanding. He was able to help by listening to my needs and treating me like a human being in pain vs a drug seeker like some others do. I am sure they do deal with people that do go in just for a fix, and I can't tell you how humiliating it is to go in for help and just be treated like a junky. For those of us in real need of pain relief with real chronic pain I am sure you have had to deal with Dr's that judge and don't listen. I can't thank you enough for your help Dr Rothmeyer. For the first time in a very long time, I received the care I needed. The nursing staff at this hospital has always been top notch. It has only been the ER docs that have treated me this way, regardless of my wife being there to help advocate for my needs and a history to back it up. Because of Dr Rothmeyer and as always, the nursing staff, my hope in getting the care I need at this hospital has been somewhat restored. This usually happens to me a couple times a year, so I just hope other ER doctors can learn from this man. When being in pain all the time, it is not just the pain, but the mental aspect of dealing with it. Anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc... So, they don't only help with the pain, but with everything else as well. It is torture dealing with this. I can't thank you enough for your care.
