Not too far of a walk for most people! It's a great photo opportunity for any Superman/Neill fan. The statue was dedicated on June 15, 2010. I don't know if Neill herself was in attendance at the unveiling, but she did feel honored to be memorialized. For those that don't know, Neill played Lois Lane on the 50's Adventures of Superman TV series, as well as appearing in other Superman-related projects. As the plaque in front reads, "Neill had acted in almost 100 movies..", but she was mostly known for her signature role. That role has given her the title, "The First Lady of Metropolis". Don't miss this unique roadside attraction, as you might as well get the full Superman/Lois Lane package!

Cross the bridge into Illinois and take a brief excursion through river flood plain to see this site. It is quite impressive even if you are observing the mounds (respectfully) from a distance. I was moved by these features. To think what people accomplished at this site nearly a thousand years ago. Absolutely astonishing to behold. The size of these mounds is amazing.

To be honest, there really isn't that much to see. Unless you are an Ancient World History…read moreenthusiast, you may find this fascinating. It is very interesting that at one point in the past, this was an actual city. The land where the site stands today was once a major trading post on the Ohio River. If you're looking for something spectacular in sight, this probably won't be for you. There are signs and plaques that tell the story, as well as showing what was believed to have existed at the time, but not very much else. The public is not allowed near or on the mounds. Speaking of which, they really weren't that attractive as they looked like their grass hasn't been cut in years. Maybe it is intentional, for all I know. The site is very tricky to get to. The best way to get there is from Brookport, Illinois. You'll see a sign for Kincaid Mounds as you're going onto Unionville Road. It is probably ten miles from the town. Once you pass the small village of Unionville, you'll know you are getting close and follow the signs. The roads are uneven, as there are no paved roads (just dirt and rocky roads) getting to the mounds.

There are four lanes of traffic - two in each direction. The largest span is the southern one at 730 feet with the smaller northern span only 630 feet. The total length of the bridge is 5632 feet and you can get a good look at it from the boat ramp area at nearby Fort Massac State Park. As one might expect for a bridge over a major waterway that also carries a major roadway, there is no breakdown lane and no pedestrian lane. In their defense, it was a Sunday afternoon and most things in town were closed -- which is understandable -- but the museum itself was open. I stepped into the gift shop first and immediately felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Superman merchandise. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Superman fan, but most of it felt like stuff I could easily find online. After wandering around the shop for a bit, I honestly lost interest and never even bought a ticket to see the actual museum exhibits. The town itself does have some nice touches -- there are several cool murals and statues scattered around, which were highlights. Unfortunately, the place felt like a bit of a ghost town that day, which made the whole experience fall flat. I'll probably give it another shot during their annual fair or on a weekday when more is open, but it'll be a while before I make the trip back. If you're a huge Superman fan, it might still be worth checking out, but manage your expectations -- especially if visiting on a Sunday afternoon. ----UPDATE---- After the staff reached out, I decided to bump up my review. Their passion for the museum really came through and I appreciated the response. As a huge Superman fan who grew up watching the original Christopher Reeve movies in theaters and collecting the classic TV shows, I expected something a little different. I'll definitely visit again on a weekday -- I'm sure the experience will be much better when I skip the gift shop and go straight into the museum. The gift shop was well stocked, but I personally wasn't looking to add more items to my collection. I mainly wanted to see old props, costumes, and classic collectible from the shows/movies and old toys.

It was I-24 road construction and miles long standstill traffic that led me to Cobb as a detour. The old bridge's metal grid deck surface causes a car to shimmy a bit. The two thin lanes, steep incline to the middle, and close oncoming traffic make the 1+ mile traverse across the Ohio River a bit hair-raising for drivers. Passengers, however, might enjoy the broad side views and river traffic going up and down the Ohio.

I won't ever make that mistake again of driving over as I didn't retract the ride side mirror arm and thus it got smashed in and shattered. Luckily nothing else broke. I understand why they do not want the small building open but I would have assumed some outdoor brochure holders full of maps, lists of special events, or resources for how to find out more information. My first thought was that if they were worried about theft or vandalism to put up a poster in the window with a QR code on it - that way anyone with a smart phone (so, the majority of Americans at this point) could at least be directed to online resources (especially maps). We watched an amazing team of older women (presumably volunteers) lovingly decorate the spot for Christmas but this does make me think that digital support may not be on their radar. I would love to see the development of online scavenger hunts or other interactive tools. They could be created and maintained with little to no effort. I was here almost a year ago as well so I know that the lack of visitor materials is a pattern. I really hope to see this change and am looking forward to the growth of this AMAZING spot!
