I went on Tuesday & like everyone else I found Neil (the owner) to be super nice, helpful & proud of his business. If you're from Ohio you may be very familiar with Strickland's. It started there in the 1930's. The ice cream is freshly made in small batches. Reese's Cup was one of the 4 flavors of the day (chocolate & vanilla are available everyday). My Boyfriend decided on the Arctic Twister with added M & M's. It was frosty & thick, a super premium Blizzard if you will. I couldn't resist going with the Dubai Chocolate Sundae. It's available for a limited time. Neil educated me on Dubai Chocolate. The crunchy bits & the crushed pistachios & that creamy rich chocolate....so decadent! I sampled the Black Sesame flavor (the other flavor of the day). Another winner! They also make pies using this unique flavor for The Chinese Moon Festival. Fabulous delicious ice cream is the whole story here. Freshly made every day. Four flavors, vanilla and chocolate every day, plus two special of the day flavors. Today it was butterscotch and orange-pineapple. We had the latter two and they were spectacular. This is real deal high buttercream premium stuff! The service was extraordinary, friendly and efficient with plenty of free tastes to help us make up our minds. This location is the heart of Costa Mesa, the parking is easy. Thank you Yelp for the opportunity to try Strickland's! All of their ice cream is made fresh daily in small batches, so they only have a few select flavors each day. You can refer to their flavor calendars to plan your month around your sweet tooth! In addition to ice cream, they offer milkshakes, arctic chillers (Blizzard/McFlurry equivalent), sundaes, and slushies. I went for ice cream and tried the Mud Pie. I loved the consistency and just wish the mocha had packed a bit more of a flavorful punch - though the oreo cookie and almonds were a nice touch. My boyfriend ordered a blue raspberry slushy - in contrast to me, he liked the flavor but wished the consistency had been smoother (the bottom was dense with ice). Five stars for Neal. He took his time explaining the history and machinery. Fun fact, it's not custard it's ice cream. The strawberry flavor was a delight. The ice cream is velvety but not too heavy on the tummy. I hope this place gets more exposure and I wish nothing but success! read more

I'm a huge Reese's Pieces fan so it was a must! Oh boy, the ice cream is so soft. And flavorful! They only make 4 flavors a day since it's made fresh daily. He told me about the history of Stricklands and was kind enough to give me a run down of how it all works there. He seems like a genuine and devoted employee. Thank you Yelp OC and Strickland's for a yummy experience! Upon arrival, we were greeted by the two gentlemen working behind the register. Their flavors rotate daily so when we went on a Saturday, the available flavors were chocolate, vanilla, strawberry oreo and mint chocolate chip. As part of the Elite Experience, I was able to order a Medium Mint Chocolate Chip in a waffle cone. I also ordered a Small Chocolate in a cup as well as I wanted to try multiple flavors. Both were delicious and creamy and I especially loved all the chocolate flakes in the Mint Chocolate Chip which added great texture. While they don't have any tables, there are a couple benches inside as well as a couple benches outside where you can enjoy your frozen treats. One of my favorite Yelp elite events purely because of the customer service. My friend and I came around 7:15 (all the way from Brea, mind you!) and after a U-turn into a parking area, we walked inside. I will say, it's a bit of a hidden spot. Even before I said I was there for the Yelp event, the owner was SO kind and told us the flavor options and guided us through the menu. We sampled both of the daily flavors, Butterscotch and Orange + Pineapple. Now listen, I do NOT like butterscotch, but it was so good that I got it in a cone and forgot to take a photo! My friend got the orange pineapple and we even got a discount (we also tipped!! Be sure to tip at these events). I truly hope they succeed. The customer service and the unique flavors (it was so cool seeing the machines they use and the texture was so yummy) really made this place stand out. read more

They closed for a while, then reopened this new location here in CM. I have been a few times already, but was excited to come back again this time for the Yelp Experience! Had the pleasure of attending this Yelp Elite event at Stricklands in Costa Mesa, and wow--I'm officially a fan! Stricklands was originally founded in 1936 in Ohio, and it's amazing that we're lucky enough in Orange County to have the only location in California outside of Ohio. The store itself is immaculately clean and organized, which immediately makes you feel welcome. I got to meet the owner, Neil, who was incredibly friendly, approachable, and helpful. He shared some background on the business and walked me through their offerings, making the experience even more enjoyable. I've been curious about the trending Dubai Chocolate, and finally got to try it as a Dubai Chocolate Sundae. It did not disappoint--fresh, high-quality, and absolutely delicious. Normally, I don't eat ice cream all that often, but I left a total convert. The location is also fantastic--right next to Triangle Square, close to shopping, dining, and even the beach. Bonus: it's in the same parking lot as my hairdresser, so I know I'll be popping back for more whenever I'm in the area. I raced here on a Tuesday after work to try their black sesame ice cream. I do not spend a lot of time in Costa Mesa, but this place could change that. The ice cream was super smooth and creamy, definitely some of the best I have ever had. The black sesame flavor was unique and good, and I liked that the ice cream was not too sweet. I love that they have rotating flavors and will definitely be back to try more (especially the Asian ones like taro, red bean, and pandan). Service was great. The person helping me was new and still getting trained, but both him and the owner were so kind and patient in explaining everything to me. I was told that I was able to get a small or medium size of anything, so I took advantage of this and got the medium ice cream in a cup with a cone on the side. I believe that they slow churn the ice cream so it was smooth and creamy. The mint chocolate chip flavor was solid and tasted exactly how I expected for it to taste. I also got the strawberry oreo flavor, which surprised me a bit. I loved that the strawberry didn't taste artificial. There were very minimal oreo chunks (which I enjoyed) so it didn't overpower the strawberry. Workers were kind, patient, and friendly. They let me sample multiple flavors. When I initially walked in, I discovered that it's Asian Owned! Love that! The owner was super kind and explained all the flavors they have and the different options offered. This experience was fun and showed me a new spot for ice cream I probably would've never known about if it weren't for yelp! Thank you Hayley and the Yelp Team for organizing this event. General I came on a Saturday night about 8 PM and it was busy! There were a couple of people ahead of me, but each person could taste the flavors and there were only 2 cashiers who also made the ice cream so it took some time. No problem though, because they were working hard and I had time to spare! Food I only tried the strawberry Oreo flavor, but there were 5 flavors total as it was the weekend. I enjoyed it but I don't think I love strawberry as an ice cream flavor that much so I opted to get a scoop of vanilla with waffle cone. Delicious! It just tasted fresh and was the perfect sweet treat after dinner. Service The service was great. Major props to the two cashier/ice cream makers. They were hustling. The guy I got was quick to explain about how the ice cream is made fresh daily and the flavors when I said I was there for the Yelp Elite event. He was super kind and as someone who also works in the service industry, he was doing great considering how hectic it was in there. Ambiance There was maybe two benches inside and a couple of benches outside. There was also a freezer with pints of ice cream and a fridge with some drinks I believe. It was pretty crowded inside with people waiting in line or waiting for their ice cream. Outside had a lot of people with their dogs enjoying their ice cream. This plaza has plenty of parking, although can get kind of sketch at night. I was walking around by myself enjoying my ice cream in the plaza but on the other end and got cat called so be careful! Just be aware of your surroundings, but this place tucked into the opposite corner has lights of lighting and felt much more safe than the other side I was at. I would definitely come again! My friend and I tried the mocha flavor when we visited Strickland's. Greeted by the friendly owner and employees, we got an introduction about the store and the various flavors available. I brought a couple of my friends along with me so we could try the other items as well. The ice cream texture is soft, but it doesn't immediately melt. Loved the butterscotch, but I didn't realize how huge the large portion would be! Definitely enough for 3-4 people to share. Our favorite was the Dubai chocolate (crunchy bits on the bottom!), but the smore sundae was also great. The staff is nice and the owner was so helpful and generous. I will definitely be back soon. We were greeted by the owner who gave us an introductory about the store and how they make their ice cream. He was super friendly and sweet. With most ice cream shops, I find it to be too sweet or the texture to be more chewy- but here it's almost dangerously good... I was able to try the black sesame and vanilla today. You can tell a place is good if their vanilla is solid. The texture of the ice cream is almost like soft serve, super creamy and light. I thought it was so cool you can see the machinery right in the front! The black sesame was on a whole other level- it had the perfect flavor without compromising the savory aspect of black sesame. I have tried this flavor at other shops and Strickland truly gets it right. Its an interesting concept to switch around flavors daily, which I can imagine is difficult to do and create! Nonetheless I will definitely keep tabs on their flavors. The highlight of this event was truly the owner who was so welcoming and gave us a rundown of the shops history! For my Yelp elite treat o'clock experience at Strickland's ice cream in Costa Mesa I went for the flavor of the day, Reese's peanut butter cup in a waffle cone. Although I only ordered one scoop it was practically overflowing the scoop was SO big! Good thing it was so big because it was so dang delicious I ate every bite, including the cone and was practically licking the paper the cone was wrapped in. Since I've been back, I have tried their twisters, their slushies, and their brownie hot fudge sundae. Next order coming up for me will be the strawberry shortcake sundae. I had never been to Stricklands but my girlfriend lovessss this place so I was super excited to try it. I was honestly very impressed by the quality, it truly felt handmade! I've been to some other handmade ice cream places in OC and feel like they miss the mark on a lot of their flavors. I had just strawberry, my girlfriend had the mud pie and strawberry. Everything was great! I love that this place does just a few. I feel like that helps ensure the quality is good! The best part is it didn't break me out or make me bloated!! Smooth experience! The cashier was very sweet and walked us through their process since it was my first time there. He explained how they make icecream in house every morning and flavors change daily. He also recommended us the most popular flavor of the day and offered samples of each icecream.
