He came out to my historic home in the heights in Newburgh, and immediately corrected my thinking on my existing yankee gutters. He went up on the roof when I wasn't there, and cleared the leaves that were likely causing the water build up in them. I have an unrelated roofing issue that he explained in great detail via video and photos to my email. Being in construction myself, I was very, very pleased with his response, explanation, and overall professionalism. As an aside--he gave a friend of mine doing a new construction project an EXCELLENT price on new seamless gutters. This is clearly a conscientious owner of a well-run business.

As an experienced home buyer, I thought I had a good understanding of the many different facets of inspections including septic systems-until the discovery of the hidden problem in my septic system. My septic tank had been pumped two years prior, and everything seemed to be functioning normally-or so I thought. I figured that my septic inspection would be relatively easy being that our tanks had risers with surface covers that were unobstructed by dirt or grass and that a check of the baffle and visual flow of the liquid-waste would be quick. However, to my surprise, Darrell wanted to inspect the distribution box buried underground because the tank was very full after only 2 years, with only two people living in the home. Darrell noticed slow outflow from the second chamber of the tank and surmised that there may be some obstruction between the outflow of the chamber and the drain fields perhaps caused by the many trees that have grown around the tanks since 1981. Darrell inserted a sewer scope into the outflow tank and discovered a separated drain pipe with one side heaved upward from a tree root. This certainly explained the unusual amount of wetness and lawn growth near the tanks which we had observed over the past year but hadn't thought much about. Who knew there was even an issue? What truly amazed me was that Darrell took the time to investigate further when he could have simply conducted a cursory inspection of the tanks, considered the outflow acceptable and left. After all, it was flowing. On top of that, he didn't charge anything extra for the additional work and time it took to dig up the distribution box and scope it. His professionalism, along with his diligence and attention to detail, is not only admirable, it is outstanding. He is truly exceptional. I since had the the field drains repaired with the septic company confirming the significant root growth that had penetrated sections of the field drain pipes. Thank you again Darrell. I encouraged them to come out first to assess the job before quoting -- they assured me someone would, but no one ever came. When the technician arrived for the scheduled power washing, he was visibly annoyed and unprepared. He even seemed to be angry with me about the driveway situation. When I asked what the person who supposedly came to assess had said, he admitted no one had actually come to look, and thought he could just do it via Google Maps... Still, I tried to keep the job moving forward. We agreed over email that he'd return with a portable washer and charge a pretty substantial extra fee. I was happy to pay extra given the circumstances, and asked for confirmation in writing that he still wanted to do the work, to which he replied: "I'm happy to take on the project." On the morning of the scheduled appointment, I sent an additional text to confirm that we were good to go and received a response confirming we were on. I then cleared all outdoor furniture, kids toys, our grill, planters, etc the morning of the appointment. But then JUST before the scheduled time, I received a last-minute text: "Actually I'm going to pass on this work -- it's not something I'm interested in dealing with." I fully understand that a contractor can decline a job. But doing so after multiple confirmations and hours of prep on my end is incredibly unprofessional. This company had every opportunity to bow out earlier, and instead chose to waste my time. I would not recommend S&S to anyone looking for reliable or respectful service.
