The customer service (LOVE Molly), the live band (Lost and Found), the award-winning wine and even the Boar's Head charcuterie and crackers were top notch!! This hidden gem is tucked away off liberty road in Frederick County. If you blink, you might miss it. I've passed this winery a few times in route to Linganore festivals, so when my cousin secured a Groupon for wine tasting, I gladly accepted the invite. We spent our Friday evening sipping away and listening to a live band. It's so quaint and pet friendly! They have a few friendly pups just waiting to meet you. Tonight was unseasonably cool for August but after the heat wave we've had it was a welcomed treat. There is plenty of seating, in open areas or under a large tent. Bring your own food! We were greeted my Molly the winery dog at our car, so this winery immediately got a 10/10 from me! It somehow only got better from there. My husband and I shared 3 flights to try as many wines as we could. We enjoyed each and every one of them but the syrah was our favorite. It is most important to note that this place has some VERY cute dogs. Very limited seating and single occupancy bathroom. Kind of off the beaten path a bit but nice and well maintained vineyard and enough parking. Probably better during warmer weather. It seems that most of the wine maybe isn't from here though? I had such a great time here. Service was fantastic. Leo is such a sweet dog. Customer service here is 10/10. I felt so welcomed and I love the friendliness and kindness I experienced here. Jill and Casey were amazing. The performer Sammie J was awesome. Her voice is smooth as butter and crisp like a Pinot Grigio. From my flight I enjoyed the Red Door the most. The Petit Verdot was great along with the Cabernet Sauvignon (but you can't ever go wrong with a good cab sauv). There is plenty of seating indoors and a variety of seats outdoors. Parking is a bit of work but when you get in, you're good. I can't see this being a good place for groups, solo or a date. Found this on Groupon and it was well worth the drive. The fist thing you will notice is the wonderful scenery while you are driving out. It was very easy to locate it as it sits on a major road. The vineyard is pretty small so there is not a lot of parking g available. Lucky for me that someone was leaving when I arrived and I was able to get on of the 5 parking spaces next to the main building. There was a sign for overflow parking in the rear but I did not venture over there. When you enter the tasting room you will be greeted by two friendly dogs. Just be aware that they will come right up to you if you have any apprehensions. My Groupon included a free tasting flight and $10 dollars off a bottle of wine. I am not big on wine so I had to ask the staff for some recommendations. He was friendly and took the time to explain several of the wines to me. I e joyed the three that I tried. I did explore the grounds a little. The outside seating areas have a lovely view. I imagine it looks even better in the spring or summer when everything is in full bloom. When looking for this place I was surprised it had a 4 star this is probably the best winery I've been to as an active wine taster the employees were very nice the dogs were the BEST PART! Visited here (first and last time) on a lovely Saturday during Memorial Day weekend, spent picking strawberries and visiting wineries in the Mt. Airy area. I selected Elk Run to visit because it was in Mt. Airy near Black Ankle, Linganore, and Loew. I knew nothing about the winery. We had just come from Black Ankle which has a first-class facility and truly terrific wines with warm, friendly staff. I really wanted to like Elk Run because I love the idea of Maryland wineries struggling to compete with better-known areas like Virginia, not to mention Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Chile..... Big world out there, so good for Maryland vintners trying to find their place! We pulled up to Elk Run to find a run-down facility, a dark and dank interior, a lovely server, and two other employees at computers talking loudly to each other. Awkward and off-putting all around, with the exception of the nice server. We purchased a flight of three wines which the visitor gets to select (at the other wineries that day the house selects the wines). I asked the server which three she recommended, so we tasted those. We carried the wines (perched in an unstable wood holder, I really thought I would tip them) out to a tent with picnic tables and sat down. We tried a small taste of all three wines. None was good. We took no more tastes and left them. This is extremely rare for me, wine is my hobby and love, and normally I would NEVER taste and leave a glass of wine. I am sympathetic to the owners and employees because they clearly are trying and struggling. To me it looks like they set up the facility 20 years ago and stopped working. And the wines are not great, so customers may not be demanding their product. Ratings: service 4, wines 1, atmosphere 2, location 5, value 3, for an overall rating of 2. My girlfriends and I really enjoyed Elk Run! I found a Groupon which prompted me to try this vineyard as it's a little further away from me than other options and I'm so glad I did! I love the smaller size of this vineyard - it's more intimate and relaxing. For awhile, my girlfriends and I were the only people there so we could truly enjoy our conversation and company without distraction. My boyfriend and I bought a Groupon about two months before going. We hopped into the car one Sunday and said let's do it! It is located in mt airy. When we arrived they were very welcoming. They have Two watch dogs as well. The person was very attentive. They don't sell food on the premises so she suggested an Italian place about 10 min way! Thank you to her because it was delicious! Led here by a Groupon deal I enjoyed a very laid back Friday evening at Elk Run. A very easy ride up Liberty Road from BaCo I highly recommend a visit. I was pleasantly pleased there was plenty of outdoor seating to spread out during these COVID times. The Groupon allowed for two tastings (3 wines each) and a $10 credit towards a bottle of wine. I would estimate we were given a list of roughly 20-25 wines to choose from. I enjoyed 1 of the 3 of my flight choices (unfortunately 2 were not of my liking) and opted to purchase a bottle of the Sangria to enjoy onsite. The live music was a great addition to the wine tasting experience. The website provides details of upcoming performances. Note: there is a $5 cover per person for live music. I noticed others seated outside brought "outside" food to enjoy with their wine. Elk Run does offer cheese, crackers, and light snacks-but I can easily see how packing your own treats would be preferred. Had a nice little trip out to this winery over Labor day weekend. It was about a 40 minute drive from Columbia, where I live. The place is small and the shop is very basic, so it's probably not a place I would go to and plan on sitting indoors. The outdoor space is large, so on a nice day it was very pleasant to sit and sip wine. I got the Groupon for a wine flight, so tried 3 different wines. The German wine (can't spell the name) was really light and refreshing. The Autumn sunset and Sweet Katherine were both sweet without being too sweet. I bought a bottle of Sweet Katherine to take home. Glasses of wine were mostly around $8, which seems like a great deal on wine! I don't know if I'll rush back given the distance, but if I'm in the area again I will make a point of stopping by. read more

Stopped in from out of state. We are sweet wine lovers and they only had one sweet wine that we liked. The Annapolis Sunset was the winner when it came to sweet wine. The employees were fine. Not over friendly nor rude. Just neutral. As far as the tasting room it was very simple. Not fancy, not too trashy. My only reservation was the dogs. Luckily I'm not allergic to dogs. It was a rainy day when we visited and we were instantly greeted by wet smelly dogs. If you are not a dog lover this place is not for you. Unfortunately for Elk Run, I'm kinda of a germaphobe. We packed a picnic and sat in the shade, enjoying the live music on a Saturday afternoon, while others enjoyed lunch from the food truck on site and sat under a large tented area. Parking is decent, wine tasting was fun - we both had wine flights w 3 different wines, and the staff were amazingly courteous and helpful. We purchased a bottle and almost another, the wine was very good. I didn't love the restroom setup - there's only one and it's unisex but it was quaint like the rest of the premises and somehow it all felt very homey. I want to return soon and enjoy it some more, must reiterate there were good vibes all around! Prefer here over Linganore and others in the mt airy area. read more

This winery had a very unique aesthetic to it. The atmosphere kind of felt like i was at a blue grass concert. The tasting room was beautifully decorated, and the staff were very ready to help. We used their Groupon and received 2 flights and a $10 coupon towards a bottle for $18. A steal if I say so! I was most blown away by their wine Sweet Katherine. It was perfectly balanced and I used my credit to buy a bottle. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is that some of the wines just weren't my personal favorite. Not as "upscale" as the Northern Virginia wineries and their wines all run on the lighter side vs the dark, heavy of the usual reds, but it is a nice place. "Sarah" (with an H) guided us through the tastings and shared her knowledge of the wines, the process and the region. Also the first winery where I can get right up to the vines and see the grapes. If you like the dark reds, I'd suggest the Syrah. Nice body, pretty color and a little bite that i would normally expect of a Cab Franc. They offer fewer whites than reds but have both a steel and oak Chardonnay. Overall it's a nice place with a great staff. If you're in the area and want to hit a winery, I'd recommend it. If you're in Northern Virginia it might be worth the trip to compare the wine regions. But I will come back. read more

I visited here on a Saturday afternoon and, I must say, it is a cute place! They have indoor wine tastings in their shop and an outdoor seating area to enjoy the bottle(or bottles) of wine after the tasting. The wine tasting was $12 a person and you get to choose 6 wines out of a whole list. I think it's very cool to be able to choose what you get to taste rather than a standard list. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable! Parking can be a bit of a pain if there is an event going on. It would be nice to have more of a seating area inside and out. The location is a little smaller, but the outdoor area is really nice to relax in, though there aren't heaters or anything so make sure to bundle up or go in warmer months if you plan to enjoy your wine outside. I absolutely loved this vineyard! We went as a valentine's day treat, and I was super worried that it was too small so we weren't going to find seating. But, it has ample seating indoors for the winter months. It's very casual which I really appreciated, and their wine is AMAZING! The staff is extremely friendly and kind which was nice. They have wine themed cards and board games which was great for my boyfriend and I. They have two dogs roaming inside their shop and they are the sweetest, and cutest dogs ever! When we arrived we were told that they do not have scones anymore and we were given plain water crackers. Sooo we were not given what we paid for and the value was not up to par. The wine was served in test tubes (trying to be cool) but you can't "wine taste" the right way when you can't even swirl/smell the wine. Decor was horrid. My family has been coming to Elk Run for 15 years. It's a great place. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, and the wine is really good too! My favorites are the Cabernet franc and Gewurtztraminer. Last night we hosted my mom's 70th birthday party there. We had originally booked a tent overlooking the vineyard. However, crazy thunderstorms hit. Carol was so accommodating and immediately suggested we use the tasting room and went out of her way to make sure it worked for the party. We totally took over the space with tons of food and decorations. Carol and the team totally helped us out & the result was gorgeous! This was our first time at Elk Ridge Run. We arranged to have a tour and tasting with a small group of friends. We enjoyed both the tour and the tasting! Our guide was extremely accommodating and we tasted rare samples he suggested and what we wanted. I've been to many tastings and tours but I really learned a great deal about how to taste properly. We loved the wines and bought a case. They have several club choices to join too so you can contrive to enjoy throughout the year. The grounds are beautiful, even in the bare winter. This place has a lot of potential but its condition is something I'd make the trip for again. The wines are great and tour is really interesting. The tasting was basic and she read off the sheet and didn't engage as much as I had hoped felt like I was at a bar not a wine tasting. I like hearing about the wines and what I should be looking for. Back when I lived in Frederick I used to always buy Elk Run's resilings. So when I came back to Frederick to visit after many years I wanted to finally stop buy and buy a bottle or two. It's a sweet little place that yes, is a bit dilapidated. But that should never turn one off! The gentleman behind the counter was nice, not over friendly, but answered all of my questions during the tastings. I got 6 for $5. The resilings are not quiet as good as they used to be, but the Annapolis Sunset is really great! My one disappointment is that usually tasting fees are waived if you buy a bottle of wine, or at least over a certain amount. I spent $50 on wine (only two bottles!) and still had to pay the tasting fee. I know this is a small business, but it's a nice, small reward to give your paying customers. read more

Nice venue, good wine, and good jazz. I enjoyed the hayride tour of the vineyard. But there is no shade and more food vendors are needed. Only food available was pizza and, fries. The venue was almost in the vineyard which means full summer sun. I past the EMT's on the way out.
