After my Air BNB was cancelled because i have kids, I desperately kept driving tiredly in an area i do not know. The vacancy sign shown bright and this lodge did not fail to impress. The owners are compassionate, the room and is clean and you can tell they take pride in their business. Theres even a playground and its right by the river!!! Stayed here multiple times over the years. The previous owners have sold the property and now they' engage in price gouging. A two day stay used to be $200, now they want upwards of $450. Save your money and time because the only thing the new owners have improved upon is the website. Will definitely not be back which is a shame. read more

ElkHorn Lodge has been a pleasant experience in Chama. The cabin rented had hot water, gas heater, gas stove, fridge, coffee maker, assorted cooking wares, towels and sleeping area. All in decent condition for the age of the cabin. The patio was my favorite for the view. Most of my time was spent at the fire pit located at the back of the property next to the Rio Chama. There's also hot tub although I have not used it. read more

We stayed in one of their regular motel rooms. It was obvious that this was an older property which is not a problem but we did expect for it to be clean, especially after reading their claim of going above and beyond because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were very disappointed. To start the hand soap dispenser was empty on the bathroom sink. There was a thick soap scum ring around the tub and the toilet had pee and hair at the bottom with splatters in the toilet bowl. Luckily I had brought some Clorox Cleanup. Our socks were filthy from just walking around the room on the dirty floor. Also which was never mentioned is the fact that a standing fan is your air conditioning. So because the room was so disgusting we spent most of the time out on the porch which we were rudely kicked off at 10:01. For over $100 a night we were very disappointed and would never go back. read more

We booked here because they state they are taking "covid precautions" involving thorough cleaning. Apparently this doesn't include cleaning the numerous hairs out of the sink and off of the toilet. Changed rooms, later found hairs there as well. Be aware that this desk in this hotel does not have a telephone and there are no telephones in the rooms. Our cell phones did not work in the room. The number listed on their website is someone who says they are "out of the country" and there was an 11 minute wait to get through even to this remote person. This is extremely dangerous were you to have a medical emergency. The WiFi doesn't work in the room. The desk person says this is because of the location but, strangely enough, your device can find the network from the motel next door, so you don't have internet either. The rooms look very shabby and maintenance has obviously been neglected for years. Don't even look at the golf cart the cleaning woman rides around in; it is so filthy it will make you gag. The elkhorn lodge was the perfect place to retire after a long night on the road! One of the best places I've stayed at thus far in the gorgeous mountains of New Mexico! The beds are beyond comfortable, the cabin is clean, and it is along the Rio Chama river where you can enjoy a bonfire at your pleasure. Delightful Little Getaway nestled in Chama Valley, with an assortment of rooms and small cabins. Was happy to see that they allow dogs, with a small fee. Backs up against the Chama River, allowing for nice long walks along the River's Edge. Shower head was a little lower than I would have liked, but the bed was comfortable and the heater work well. We loved this place so much we stayed an unplanned second night because we didn't want to leave. The cabins were cozy and homey like a vacation home. Linda was very helpful, booking tickets for us on Chama's train even though the office was closed for the night when I couldn't purchase tix on my phone. I have to comment on this right now. My boyfriend owns a cabin 10 min from here and during the buying process we stayed here. Wonderful female workers when we stayed about 3 months ago. However I puIled in this afternoon to throw out my coffee cup and a empty water bottle of my little boys and this man was sitting in the bed of his pickup truck with another male and he yelled at me as I barely pulled in "what the fuck are you doing here?" My so got scared and I was appalled. He had no clue if I was checking in etc. I kindly asked him if I could throw my small trash of coffee and water bottle and he said "this isn't a fucking public trash, turn the fuck around and get the fuck out of here". He proceeded to yell at us and scare my son. He told his dog to attack. I told him I'm sorry I wants to throw 2 cups that's it. NEVER again will I stay at the elkhorn lodge. I've never felt so threatened! Especially at a place I've loved staying at before!! No Place cares my son that's very unprofessional!! read more

This place was a huge disappointment. The bathroom was filthy, with soap leaking all over the tub. There were dead flies in the toilet. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable. Be prepared to manually light your oven with a match. I booked the weekend here based on reviews in Yelp, and I did not have that experience, which is why I wanted to leave a review. The pictures on the website aren't the actual pictures of the room. The website says gas fireplace in the room we booked. It was a space heater that went out in the middle of the night. After ringing the night bell several times with no answer, we finally drove 5 hours back to Denver because we were freezing. The front desk person was friendly upon check in, but that's the only positive. read more

Had I done this review yesterday, it would've been 5 stars. Then I checked my bank account this morning. Let's start with the positive though. The lady in the office at check in was very friendly and helpful. We kind of liked the "quiet time" hours because we had full days of activities planned and it was nice to actually get some sleep. They provided more than enough towels, toiletries, etc. Everything you would need was there, except air conditioning, but in the mountains you don't really expect to need more than a fan and open windows. It's not their fault that New Mexico is having a freak heat wave. Now to the bad. I checked our bank account this morning and found a new charge from them for $28.32. The amount of money isn't the issue. When I emailed them to get an explanation for the charge, I was told that it was for damage found after we left. The damage that we are being accused of, and charged for, was a broken lamp that was broken when we got there and some pink stains on the pillows and sheets of a bed that we never used. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this property. read more

My husband had stayed here with his mom, 30 years ago & suggested we check it out. I'm SO glad we did. Autumn, the evening host was very friendly & helpful checking us in. We had not made reservations but got lucky with a couple openings. Very charming with vintage feel yet maintained well. We stayed in a king room which was very roomy & clean! Loved the screen door & large front window to allow the breeze to flow through. So glad we enjoyed the hot tub too. Much needed relaxing after a week camping. The property is large, backing up to the Rio Chama. Excellent, private area to stroll along the riverside with our pup. Chairs for relaxing there were much appreciated. Nice playground & group facility. Although the fire ban was in full effect, there were plenty of areas for campfires & grills. Sure these are really nice in the winter. We also enjoyed the Elkhorn Cafe just up a short path. Nice variety of menu choices & friendly services. We were so relaxed, we decided to stay an extra day. My family has been staying at the Elkhorn Lodge at least once a year and most often two or three times a year for the last six years and, obviously, we love it. Yes, it is rustic and does not have many amenities which urban hotels and motels provide and that is exactly why we love it. It's our "run away from home" spot away from the hustle of the city. The rooms are clean and comfortable and, if you get a cabin, you'll have a kitchen just ready for you to start cooking. Bring your food with you or shop at the nearby store in town. You can take the Cumbres and Toltec steam powered train on a wonderful ride through the pines, fish in the Chama River right behind the lodge property, go hiking, or take a scenic drive up into Colorado. There are a number of restaurants a short drive into town if you choose not to cook and during the day the shops are a pleasure to browse through. The new owners, Linda and Albert, are beyond words fantastic and we're beginning to think of them like family...perhaps because that's how they treat us when we're at the lodge. If there is any sort of problem they are "on it" and it's taken care of in short order. All in all I can't say enough good stuff about Linda, Albert, their staff, and the Elkhorn Lodge. read more

We read, prior to our visit this past July13-15; that the cabins were in poor shape. When we arrived, we discovered that the cabin was quite warm compared to other cabins. We told the front desk, who shrugged her shoulders and had no idea as to why. we spent the time sweating in the cabin at night. Heater was off, oven off, no reason for the heat. i tried to open one windows, and discovered that 1. it had no screen and 2. it was broken and they used a silicone sealer to close "the hole". we tried to leave the front door open with the screen door closed. well, the screen door did not extens to the top of the seal, bug freeway into the cabin at night. Recently stayed here over a weekend just to get away for a bit after finding an (awesome!) deal on Groupon. It is situated in a small town just over the NM-CO line and is surrounded by miles of beautiful rivers and forests. This property is apparently under new management and the current owners are fantastic. At check-in we were warmly greeted. The cabin we stayed in had a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen with full refrigerator and small stove. They are pet friendly too! The furnishings and towels are a little older, but has a nice rustic feel. We requested to use the hot tub the first night and they promptly prepared it for us. We also had a water main break during the second day we were there, leaving us with no hot water. When we called the owners, they were there immediately, apologized profusely, kept us updated on the progress and had it fixed within the hour. I enjoyed staying here and would recommend giving this place another chance is your prior experience was less than stellar. New owners are great! read more
