If it were not for the few staff members i have a lot of respect for, i would have left this review…read moreearlier. It is so disappointing to be SO let down by mental health "professionals". About 3 years ago, i sat in a yoga class at The Dorm. The instructor mentioned something about chronic fatigue syndrome, so i asked about it because i had been feeling weirdly tired. I was dismissed because i apparently was not too tired to leave my bed. I was taking prescribed medication so that I could make it to make it to The Dorm on time, every day and to pay attention (as if i would not be penalized if i was late). Maybe if this instructor had actually listened to me I would be a bit more fond on looking back at my experience there. Well, years later - now im finding out i have chronic fatigue, amongst various other chronic health issues. Considering i was in The Dorm group for chronic illnesses, you would think comments like i had made to an instructor, would have been taken seriously or at least not have been immediately dismissed. That was a cry for help. Also receiving a message asking for a positive review when the owner of this place can't even have a 5 min conversation with you when you're actually going there and need help is absolutely wild to me.

Choosing The Dorm can lead to extremely negative emotional and practical consequences. Dating in treatment is prohibited by The Dorm, but grossly enabled by its uniquely strong social component. The Dorm's young-adult-focused clubhouse setting intimately connects young people in recovery. It is a breeding ground for sexual, romantic, and codependent relationships. Young people risk suffering emotional hurdles that may undermine their recovery process. Blame is shifted away from The Dorm when this occurs. Furthermore, over-reliance on Dorm services is ill-advised. The Dorm tends to overstate its capacity to guide young people in finding their next steps. Inadequate career and academic counseling can lead to serious inconvenience and emotional distress. Many clients also discontinue care with external providers upon admission, becoming enmeshed in the world of The Dorm (group therapy, clubhouse access, evening socials, individual therapy, and sometimes housing). While the goal is to facilitate a smooth transition back to everyday life, there are many ways by which the process may be disrupted. Clients who become fully integrated into The Dorm may find themselves suddenly isolated and without structure or support should they face issues with their team. If you feel you would benefit from a treatment plan that includes community support, work with your current provider to find an environment that offers better regulation and oversight. The Dorm presents many dangers and pitfalls that you will not find elsewhere.

Also, like most Asians, I was raised in an environment that didn't believe in therapy. However, I went to see Dan for several months in 2013. He was recommended to me by a close coworker. I was very unhappy with my firm job and was suffering from depression and severe anxiety. I wanted to find a natural way to deal with my depression and anxiety and after gentle nudging from my husband, I finally made an appointment with Dan. Dan was warm, kind, and caring. I felt safe to share all my regrets and fears. He was so patient and never judgmental. Plus, it was nice to talk to someone who I didn't feel like I was burdening with my issues since he was being paid to listen. He gave me practical advice/"homework" on how to manage my work-induced anxiety. He gently challenged the false "truths" I kept ruminating on but let me come to the realization myself that many of these "truths" were created by my fears. He was immediately available during emergencies and I could tell that he truly cared about me as his patient/client. He was extremely instrumental in helping me confront my past and gain the courage to take major steps in order live the life that I wanted. I know that sounds cliche but it's true. I am so so thankful for Dan. That's Dan. Always refreshingly honest and seeking what's best for his clients. I remember that on our last appointment, he said that although he enjoyed speaking with me, he didn't think I needed to see him anymore. I highly recommend Dan whether it's for treatment of depression and/or anxiety or career counseling. My sessions with him changed my life and I continue to use the lessons I learned in those sessions every day.
