The hosts at Twin Peaks, our B&B for our visit, recommended Elliot's for dinner, and we're very glad that they did. Like so many places on Manitoulin Island Elliot's is casual and unpretentious, but it serves really good food at very reasonable prices. When we arrived the patio was quite busy, but our hosts were very accommodating and friendly as they let us choose from the available tables. They were very prompt to come by and explain the specials and answer questions. As we perused the menu we were a bit disappointed that we couldn't order a cider (neither of us drink beer), but that disappointment evaporated instantly when our server brought the Wednesday wine special to our attention - $15/bottle (!) for a pretty decent Argentinian table wine. On to the food. Appetizer: We shared a Bacon Jam, Goat Cheese and Baguette plate and, as promised by our server, it was a generous serving that satisfied the two of us. More importantly, it was just really good food. The cheese was delicious, and the bacon jam was off-the-charts! They also served enough bread for our dish, which seems oddly rare at many restaurants. Mains: We had already decided that the Hawburger just had to happen. Elliot's version of a classic PB&J burger is made special by the addition of Hawberry Jelly (a Manitoulin Island original). The inclusion of pickled jalapeño peppers also provides a fabulous accent to the creamy saltiness of the peanut butter and the tangy sweet of the Hawberry Jelly. This was a really, really good burger. For our other main we chose the grilled pickerel and it did not disappoint. The fish was cooked to perfection and there was certainly no need to use the tartar sauce provided to add flavour. The fries were cooked well, though as is the style on the island they were not done in crispy twice-fried style. We think the type of potato they use might be giving them a bit of an unusual texture. In this case the fries were certainly enhanced by dipping them in the side of very nicely executed gravy that we ordered. Desserts: We chose a piece of warm, in-house made apple pie (so yummy) and a Bailey's cheesecake. While the cheesecake was OK, we definitely would have been happier with two pieces of that mouth-watering pie! Price: The meal came to $100 (including wine, taxes and tip), a very fair price for the quality of the food and service. We can definitely recommend Elliot's and will return on our next visit to Manitoulin Island. read more

Mixed impressions after two visits here. Our first, just after arriving on Manitoulin for the first time, was good. It was in the middle of a hot Saturday afternoon and salad was sounding good. My wife got a greek salad, I got the "California Salad" with chicken, and both were good. The vegetables were crisp, the chicken on mine was tender, and both had excellent dressing. My salad had avocado on it, which can be a chancy thing--it's often either mushy or underripe. MIne was neither, I'm happy to say. Elliott's offers beer and wine, and we enjoyed a pint of locally brewed beer with our salad. Service was efficient and friendly, though we were nearly the only people there at the time. Elliot's was busier when we returned for breakfast on our last day on the island. We took an open table near the door, which may have been a mistake, since we were out of the sight line of the kitchen. Though we got our menu and our waters quickly, we were mostly left to our own devices during our visit. We both ordered omelettes and coffee. It took quite a while for the omelettes to come, during which we finished our coffee, with no one showing up to give us a refill. A different waitress brought our omelettes and refilled our coffee, but we didn't see her or our original waitress again. We didn't bother waiting for a second refill. There was another waitress working in our corner of the restaurant, checking in on her customers regularly. Must have been nice. Eventually I just went to the register and told the cashier what we'd ordered, as I wasn't sure a bill would ever come. The food itself? Not bad. Our omelettes (cheese for my wife, western for me) were good, fluffy and not overcooked. The home fries were chunky rather than sliced, as I'm used to seeing them. Sometimes the chunky style can be tough and undercooked, though these were tender. You can get onions cooked with them, and I recommend that. Our toast on the other hand was flat out burnt (see photo). I don't care how busy you get, toast like that should never have been plated. Food is certainly worth a stop. If things line up right, you might get good service as well. read more

The service at Elliot's is incredibly, nonsensically lacking. If you're outside on the patio, even if there is one -- or no -- table seated inside, you're looking at above-average wait times to be seen/served/checked on. I stopped in for a burger and a glass of wine at 5 PM on a Saturday. Restaurant nowhere near capacity. I spent two hours there -- most of it the excruciating 40-minutes where nobody seemed to notice the fact I was still sitting here and had an empty glass of wine I'd like topped up. Two separate times I've been here and asked for a box for my food, for the server to tell me they'd get me one, and then never return. Once I came here and they said they were no longer doing all-day breakfast because they ran out of eggs. I walked over to Valu Mart to buy them eggs for my breakfast, to have them still charge me the full amount and return my egg carton to me with two thirds of the remaining eggs clearly broken out of spite. I only come here because when it comes to food options on Manitoulin -- especially if you're staying at the local motels -- Elliot's is, sadly, one of the only options. Come here prepared to encounter subpar service, subpar food, and extortionately high bills. If you can eat anywhere else, do. read more

Oh Elliott's! We were unfortunately so disappointed. After a long hike, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in here for dinner on the way back to our cabin. When we got there it was quite busy but there was an abundance of waitresses for the dining area so speed of service wasn't an issue. The waitress got our drinks quickly and we ordered a Caesar salad and fried fish chunks as appetizers. 2 bites into the salad my boyfriend showed me a dead fly on the bite he was just about to eat. We sent it back and the waitress brought out another one. After that I didn't want any salad but my boyfriend said it was okay. The fish was delicious though. I ordered a mushroom Swiss burger with Cajun chippers. I've had better but I have no complaints about it. My boyfriend ordered the steak and shrimp. The steak was potentially the worst piece of meat he has ever been served. It was full of gristle and inedible, I wouldn't even feel comfortable feeding this to our huge German Shepherd. It was also the first time we have seen a restaurant steak come out not grilled. This one was an obvious pan sear and not in a good way. The shrimp was decent as were the veggies and chippers. After such a great day it sucked to end it on such a bad note. read more

First time to the island. Service was above & beyond. Didn't flinch for special requests. Chef took it upon himself to come to our table to check on dietary needs. Comfortable atmosphere, delicious, fresh food. Good portions. Will definitely visit again. read more
