The decor is minimal but not at all austere despite it being a large space, mostly because it's all wood and subtle colours. Real napkins on the tables! Along the whole length of one wall is an amazing wooden shelving unit / dresser with drawers. It was discovered out in the garage when the new people opened the restaurant and was made for the general stores which is what this building had been when it first opened. There are fantastic lamps on the walls - incandescent bulbs with gorgeous twisty filaments in metal cages. Lovely. Anyway, the menu was small but unusual. Once we had seen the menu we decided to have a little more than a croissant! I chose scrambled eggs with chives and cream; my partner had charred mackerel with pickled cherries. There was not a lot when it arrived but it was delicious and with a gorgeous creamy texture. It came with slices of soda bread toast, griddles with olive oil. The combination was delicious. My partner loved his fish, which looked not far off raw and loved the pickled cherries too. As this had been so good we decided to try the wonderfully named Dirty, filthy cheesecake! So named because they mix in another pungent cheese. Today it was stinking bishop! When it arrived as a small portion with currants and grapes and a red wine reduction it was delicious. Very firm and dense and with a definite taste of something pungent lurking in the background. Unusual. We decided to finish with a latte each and agreed afterwards that it was a top class cup of coffee. Service was very friendly, the cakes on the counter looked great, the cocktails sounded extra special and Dan is a bit of a cocktail whizz by all accounts. Also, the wine list was individual and had obviously been chosen thoughtfully. Sadly, as we still had our early morning hats on we didn't feel wine was appropriate ... We were very impressed and would have loved a return visit but due to the press of the weekend it didn't happen.

There were only three servers who were incredibly overextended, but the service standards were terrible (For example, not giving us a test pour of the wine to see if the bottle was OK, and just leaving it on the table - and not providing anyway to chill the white wine while we were having dinner; we had to work really hard to get a bottle of water with our meal, and then the waitresses would disappear for long stretches and we never did get a refill of it). We had two beautiful dinners on our other two nights in France, but this was just ridiculously bad. We couldn't get out fast enough at the end of dinner (In part because it took so long just to get the damn check, but also because we were so anxious to leave). This cafe is run by the 1066 bakery (whose main 'bakehouse' is located just next door). So bread is super fresh and thick cut :) We've found food consistently delicious and quick. It's often busy but the staff are friendly and happy to help. We brought a birthday cake and they happily gave us plates (as they're a small cafe though I can imagine on a busier day they might not have enough spare if you're a large group like us - best to bring extra napkins if you want to do cake just in case). Great play structure for kids outside as well. Overall lovely little hidden Cafe - we will return.

This is a great place for a very reasonable breakfast, lunch, snacks and teas. It was recently taken over and the food has improved substantially, hot specials are available every day and they are open 364 days a year. I had a delicious shepherds pie and my mother had a red onion, feta and spinach quiche with lovely fresh salad. Fabulous home made cakes too, especially the carrot cake, which was very moist, rich and with lots of icing.

Fantastic! A skip…read moreaway from Canterbury West rail station is a wonderful indoor market offering nooks of various goods. On various days and hours there are bustling people shopping for fruits, veg, meats, and other goods. While on other hours the lower level offers tables to munch on lunch items such as freshly made sandwiches, tea, coffee and desserts. Upper level offers proper dining with a rustic feel. Need a loo, that is here too! Overall a delightful experience with several visits during my stay in town
