Fantastic! A skip away from Canterbury West rail station is a wonderful indoor market offering nooks of various goods. On various days and hours there are bustling people shopping for fruits, veg, meats, and other goods. While on other hours the lower level offers tables to munch on lunch items such as freshly made sandwiches, tea, coffee and desserts. Upper level offers proper dining with a rustic feel. The Goods Shed is an indoor Farmers Market right outside of the railway station of Canterbury. It is unusual and interesting to see under one roof seafood, fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, cheese, and other local produce, as well as food tasting tables and beer bars. Oh how I miss this place!! So it's a farmer's market set up during the day but there's a seating area, a couple of steps above, for lunch & supper. So we ate here twice- breakfast and supper. For breakfast, we grabbed some cappuccinos and freshly made donuts and sausage rolls. Amazing! There's no other words to describe how delicious they were. As for our family supper, we were suppose to try the guinea fowl since we don't have that here in the US but they ran out that night. I ended up having the hake and it was really tasty! The sides that accompanied it was perfect as well. And for dessert, I got some ice cream and everybody else got the mousse. Of course I tried it and it was so good! Hopefully I'll get to eat at this place again the next time we're there! read more

This place is a must if you're ever in Kent. This is by far my favorite thing about Canterbury and I come here on a weekly basis when possible. I was giddy during my first visit and am just as excited each time. The produce is alright, some weeks are better than others. Everyone is extremely friendly here! The sellers are all on a first name basis and have a great sense of humor. Jonny Sandwich makes INCREDIBLE sandwiches averaging around 4 quid! Love it. Haven't tried his soups but they smell divine. The Butcher has great meats and they're all extremely helpful. The Larder makes FANTASTIC lunches for 5 quid. There's a variety of 'fill it yourself' olive oil (really yummy) 'station' at the general store. Great selection of wine and local ale/lager. Tom's Cheese has seriously the best cheese available in the UK. Patrick's Kitchen has really yummy tarts (go early when they're fresh and warm! yumm) and the best mini sausage rolls (the pastry is incredible). And the restaurant? BEST English restaurant in town. Really. The atmosphere really is something. The menu changes daily according to the produce that day. The bread they bring out is so good I always ask for more. Dinner for four: starters, mains, desserts, and wine, came out to be around 130 quid--a bit of a splurge especially for us students but it was SO WORTH IT. A light lunch here is great if you order a large starter. They have a great selection of drinks as well. If you come during dinner, MAKE A RESERVATION!! They take orders up until 9:30pm. They've won Michelin top stars for 3 years The Shed also has local sellers from all over South-east England come in at various rotating days. I could go on and on about this place, but really... you just have to come see it all. If anyone tells me they've visited Canterbury, my first question will be about the Cathedral and definitely The Goods Shed. p.s. if you're coming for anything other than produce, come about 30 minutes after opening time since everyone's still setting up and I always feel weird going in while it's opening. I had a good experience at the Goods Shed with my dad - the food portions were small but tasted amazing, clearly very fresh ingredients and innovative combinations, would highly recommend, albeit slightly on the more expensive side of local offerings. I had the beetroot & sourdough appetisers with a side of potatoes. Whilst the environment was nice and relaxed, a warning to diners to wrap up warm as it can get somewhat cold in there! This place is a farmers' market and a restaurant. I got treated to lunch here the other week, and what a treat! Literally next to Canterbury West station, this place is big - a converted goods shed which is basically a big barn-like structure. Inside it's totally open plan. Downstairs is a farmers' market which is on 7 days a week and has every thing you'd want, fresh local meat, cheese, bread, veg etc etc. Upstairs (it's basically a big airy balcony which overlooks the downstairs) is the restaurant, which sources as much of its food locally as it can. It's not cheap but about right for the exquisite quality of the food. The mackerel with beetroot yoghurt was gorgeous, and my lemon parfait was basically a glass full of thick double cream infused with fresh lemon with a soft sponge thing and fresh berries on the side. Heaven - and I'm not normally a fan of dessert. They have a lot of fresh fruit juice combinations but don't worry they also sell wine. The meat mains they were bringing out looked juicy and delicious and I wish I'd had more time there so I could have had one too! read more

I am always telling other people how great day trips are, but I rarely go on any. I don't know, maybe I think I'll miss something big in the city if I take a saunter into the countryside. No I am not one of those people who fears cows, grass and fresh air. I think I just don't take the time. Well I am SO glad I finally took a Saturday and joined a few foodie friends and headed out to Canterbury. Having read the Canterbury Tales in secondary school, required reading for all US high school students (at least where I lived), I wasn't sure what to expect because I hated the stories. But since I was not going to explore the town, which was charming, I focused all my time and attention on the Good Shed. The Good Shed is a market and restaurant. If I lived in Canterbury or within a 60 minute drive I would be a regular!! You walk into this old large space and are hit by smells and sights all at once! I was looking around like a kid in a candy shop trying to take everything in and store it in my mental rolodex for future trips. The market had a wide variety of culinary delights. After you find the meat, which ranging from chicken to rabbit to quail, you rush over to the fish which is also just as varied. Between the meat and fish, vendors are selling homemade chocolates and just when you are set to make a purchase the lure of fresh made bread takes hold of your nostrils and you float toward the smell. The Good Shed sells everything you need to make a spectacular meal! You can purchase your meat/fish, bread, veggies, and wine. This place is a foodie paradise!!! If you don't have the time or skill to whip up something fabulous, you can just have lunch or dinner in the restaurant....amazing! I had never had rabbit and decided to leave my comfort zone and try something new. All I can say is...Thumper was delicious!! The rabbit stew was perfectly seasoned and tender, the meat fell off the bone and if I ever eat rabbit again, The Good Shed set an exceptionally high standard. My friends enjoyed pork with a few bits of fried up pork skin, we could have all just sat around eating that! I ended my delightful mouth watering meal with chocolate cake...pure decadence! I was in heaven!! If all my day trips could be centred around food and this delicious, I need to start getting out of the city weekly!!! read more

It's hard to believe we moved from Kent five years ago, and it's been almost exactly that long since we last ate at the Goods Shed. Coming back, I was slightly trepidatious. What if it's changed? What if... what if it's *not any good* anymore? The Goods Shed has changed, a little. There are printed menus now, so you don't have to squint at or go up to the chalkboard any more to decide what you're having. Although this is a very mild winter, they do seem to have cracked the heating problem which was always a bit of a bugbear in the colder months. But as for the cooking, oh the cooking! Every bit as good as before if not better. We're staying four nights in Canterbury and have dined at the Goods Shed twice now, once for Sunday lunch, once for supper. For me, my highlight was the pork belly I had for lunch. Whilst the actual pork was very good, it wasn't quite the best in and of itself I've ever had, but its accompaniments, especially the apple sauce, made it one of the dozen best meals I've ever had (I'd say the Goods Shed accounts for maybe a third of my total in that respect). Similarly my venison for supper was enhanced by the jus and black pudding - the whole is always greater than the sum of the parts at the Goods Shed. My wife's highlight was the halibut she had for supper and the lemon posset she had for dessert on both visits. For myself, I would say the British cheeseboard is not to be missed. Walking back to our rental, I saw other people going into other eating places in Canterbury and I wanted to shout at them "Fools! The best restaurant in all of England is just around the corner!" I've been to the Goods Shed for both the farmers market and the restaurant. On both count I have to say that I've never been anywhere like it. It's absolutely amazing! The farmers market has an amazing selection of foods from around Europe as well as a top notch butchers and fishmongers. I love the comparison board they have on the wall with their prices compared to the prices around Canterbury - they're almost always the cheapest. There's a real sense of community in the Good Shed with all of the different sellers working together. It's really nice to see. The restaurant has an amazing selection of fresh local food with ingredients from the market sellers themselves. The whole place is an amazing experience and a definite place to visit if you're in town. read more

Went there the other night for dinner and it's fast becoming one of my favorite places to eat. Had a lovely confit duck leg and roast duck breast. The breast was nicely prepared and not too greasy (probably rendered off for the confit?). I've been here quite a few times and I've always had something nice. Their lunchtime larder specials are an awesome deal as well at £5. Definitely worth the trip. read more

It's a pity the Goods Shed isn't closer to the center of Canterbury. If you go to Canterbury via the West train station the large brick building in a parking lot should be your first destination. The food selection is incredible (gourmet fish, cheese, wine, macaroons!). All of the sellers are friendly and are supportive of each other. If you feel like emptying your wallet definitely have a meal at the restaurant. Pricey but SO SO good. read more

Never been to the restaurant but the farmers market is brilliant. Local/Organically grown food, always fresh and a friendly place to shop. Reasonably priced. Such a cool set up, housed in the old railway building with lots of exposed brickwork and old wood floors. Great ethos too - less food waste, less packaging, less mileage, must equal more taste! Love the little deli part selling smoked fish/olives/salami etc, the marinaded anchovies are AMAZING and Johnny Sandwich makes amazing sandwiches. Tom's Cheese has really good cheeses too! Great place to do some of the shopping if you live locally or pop in for some treats if you're just visiting - it's worth it! read more

Worth a day trip, and with Canterbury West Station next door, it's really easy to do. As food markets go, it's pretty small, but the produce is good, and I've sampled pretty much everything from every stall. My fav's being the butcher and cheese makers and If you are a fan of craft beer then hit the Bottle Shop, a brilliant selection of craft beers, really really good. When you done hot Rafael's cafe, really good food all sourced from the market. Well worth a visit. read more

This is a unique experience as you eat on a little stage above a farmers' market and you are therefore served up with the freshest food of the day that the chef decides he can use to make you a sumptuous lunch. The quality of the meal was felt straight away with the delicious bread and tasty butter. The chicken and celery were excellent but I couldnot fit in any of the traditional English puddings although they looked fabulous After lunch you can browse around the market and I came away with local cheese and huge mushrooms. read more

All I can say, it's worth the wait. Good food isn't microwaveable. The time between my main course of duck and potatoes, and desert was perfect to digest and make room for a delicious strawberry sorbet. Definitely the best place in Canterbury. If only there was one back home! read more

A number of good options here for hungry people who are prepared to walk off the high street and away from the chains that have sprung up with relish in canterbury. Grab a panino from the bakery and a beer fromt the bottle shop or stop for a doorstop size sandwich or make time to savour some delicious food at the raised restaurant before stocking up on organic vegetables, local meat and fish-some will report that the prices are higher than the supermarket but I've not found this on the vegetables or fish, in fact I've often got it cheaper. Staff are very attentive in the restaurant and the food (sometimes odd combinations- they've not yet managed to sell the combination of cheese and fish to me) but the vegetable platter is always a winner. A favourite with my family members when they visit. Try their Bramble Kir as an aperitif. read more

Lovely location with amazing, imaginative dishes. Never fails to disappoint. Attentive, helpful staff who are knowledgeable about the product served. We visit from Bristol as our son in at university in Canterbury and we always fine here. As there are too many lovely things to choose from, we have taken to choosing two starters each plus desert. Excellent choice of local wine, beer and cider. Always nice to mooch around the stalls and pick up some goodies for tea too. read more

Visiting the Goods Shed is definitely an experience for locavores. It's conveniently located right down from the train station, so it's easy to get to even if you're coming from somewhere else. "Shed" is used literally here. It's a big barn-warehouse setup, packed with vendors. You need to make two or three laps just to take stock of everything. The restaurant has an ever-changing menu of locally sourced Kentish produce and game, while the snack bars offer soup, sandwiches and snacks. Nothing goes to waste; you often see yesterday's produce pickled in jars. There's an amazing selection of diverse wine and beer, as well as a butcher's shop that sells wood pigeon, boar and venison along with chicken, beef and pork. The cheesemonger has brie and cheddar that's absolutely to die for, while sweets and preserves can be found at the back. The produce selection takes up the back-middle of the shop. Roasting potatoes, onions, leeks, rhubarb, carrots -- it's all there. You can also handpick your own free-range eggs, and reuse your carton over and over. The prices are extremely reasonable (they include a blackboard with price comparisons to Tesco and Sainsbury), given what you're getting. It's worth a special trip. read more

My mum is gluten free and they did everything they could to accomodate her. the service was a little slow but I think it was due to a small mix up, and not an ongoing problem. The Goods Shed is one of my favourite places in Canterbury. It was the first place I ate, when I came to view houses here before moving and it was so delicious. It's not cheap, but the food is all locally sourced and beautifully cooked. You sit on a raised section overlooking the excellent market (open 7 days a week) - you can get fish, all kinds of alcohol, meat, cheeses, delicious Italian breads and snacks, local fruit & vegetables, oils, anything you could want! It's also right next to Canterbury rail station so great for visitors to the city. read more
