The older staff at this location are fine and sometimes very helpful. The younger staff members often appear to be high or drunk and show no interest in customer service, working the cash registers, etc. Unfortunately you can't avoid interacting with them since you have to check out and pay. I am sorry to be posting a negative review. Most workers have been great here. My mom and I have been coming here for years but the cashier asked us to check our bags in when we have never been asked to since the 1990's. My mom is 82 and she was upset at this and she has a tiny backpack. At least 5 people have walked in with large backpacks and were not asked to check in their backpacks. I hope you get your policy straight. I talked to the cashier about how we felt and I think either Ace needs to hire another person to police the customers coming in or pay the cashier more in order to accomplish additional labor in her job, but I really don't think it is realistic to have the cashier do her job and police the customers entering the store. The way your policy is being implemented is random and can seem like racial profiling, which I assume you don't want a reputation for. read more

This store is absolutely fantastic! They carry the right mix of everything and then some (very tempting and useful selection of goodies near the check out area). I've been coming for years and the employees are always helpful, warm and knowledgeable. I went there a few weeks ago for paint and got excellent advice and high quality Benjamin Moore paint in custom colors! More recently I bought soil and Chris even helped me get it out to the car. I'm a little surprised at the reviews seem to be all over the place on this Ace, so far all my experiences here have been just fine. This hardware store walks a fine line of serving a community that many of the residents live in high-rises or courtyard buildings, sure there are single family residences too, however I think they're outnumbered. You won't see people carrying out sheets of lumber or drywall. What you will see is paint, screen repairs, and plumbing items. They have all those odds and ends, need a supply line, p-trap or wax ring, they have it. You can also do some holiday shopping here, you want a George Foreman grill, coffee maker, or some other household item and you're a tight spot and can't make it to the mall, odds are you can find something here. It's certainly better than a perfume set from the drug store. If you're shopping for me, I'll take a power drill or some sawzall blades. For a stocking stuffer work gloves will do, I seem to loose those a lot and now have a new style of wearing unmatched gloves. Staff is friendly, I asked for help to find an item and was walked over to it, and when the line started to get a few people deep an employee opened up another lane and waved people over. For the average homeowner you'll find what you need here, and then some. Conveniently located with a big parking lot. read more

I recently stopped in, needing to get my license place mounted. Not knowing what size screws I needed, the sales associate came out to the parking lot with me. Realizing a little more work was needed, he went back into the store for a drill, lay prone on the parking lot, and drilled larger holes for better mounting the plate. All this service for a sub-$2.00 sale. I'm a fairly regular customer here anyway, but if this had been my first visit, it would have elicited my ongoing loyalty! read more

Manny, the store manager, is always very helpful and knows his stuff! My daughter and I needed a bolt for a skate that a sports equipment shop said would be hard to find. Yah- this is really the only hardware-y store in Hyde Park. It carries basic hardware supplies like tools, paints home hardware, but also home good items like photo frames, vases, shower caddies, cutesy kitchen items, storage maximizing goods, and shower curtains. Really the only reason I go in here is to get keys made, or look at the flower pots. Parking is ample, the store is pretty small, but the workers are friendly and helpful. read more

Ace is my best friend. Since I am a sculptor, I visit Ace Hardware weekly. I have gotten copper tube, primer, paint and other materials here before, and I am mostly satisfied with the service and the quality of the materials. I was only disappointed once, when I had to return to the store three times to get tape and hang my photos. Three different staff had offered me different advice, and only the third staff was able to give me the right tape to hang my photos. Prior to that, my photos fell on the floor for the first time, and ruined the images. Although Ace is slightly more expensive than Home Depot, Ace has a better quality of materials and service overall. Therefore, I would prefer Ace to Home Depot. Service couldn't have been worse. Raoul in the lumber/key-cutting/screws department clearly did not want to be at work that day. The first thing that happened was that I asked him whether they had some 40x24 plywood. He said, and I quote, "nope". Well, there was wood everywhere so I figure I'll just help myself. The first piece of plywood I picked up was 48x24. Fantastic. I show it to him, as well as a 2x4. I all of he could cut the plywood down to 40x24 and the 2x4 to 40 inches as well. He says, "one thing at a time." Ok. Clearly he is upset about something so I don't want to antagonize him because I really need this wood. As I hand it to him, I ask him how much it will be. Without missing a beat he says, "a hundred dollars." At this point I'm wondering if he thinks he knows me or something because he's acting like he caught me in bed with his wife. I just look at him because I'm confused by the animosity. After a few seconds he gives up on our impromptu staring contest and goes to actually check the price. To my surprise he gives me a straight answer this time. Of course it's not a hundred dollars. And then he begins cutting. The plywood gets cut with no major issues, though he's pushing the circular saw though the wood so fast it's not a clean cut by any means. It's rough and packed with splintered wood. However, he completely botches the 2x4. While he's cutting, it breaks; that is how fast he is pushing it through the wood. And then he hands it to me! I'm looking at the 2x4 and it is missing a three-inch chunk. And he wants me to accept it! At this point I can no longer sympathize with whatever he is going through because, like I said before, I need this wood. However, I need it whole and not in this molested form. So I tell him it's essentially useless and I ask him to cut it again. To my surprise he tried again and does a half way decent job. And I mean half way almost literally because once again the cut edge is rough and full of splinters. But this time usable for my purposes. What really grinds my gears about this is that Ace hardware is a small local hardware store. Its competitors are the Menards, Lowe's, and Home Depots of the world and so in order to survive against the big boys, they position themselves as "the place with the helpful hardware folks." If I want to be treated like garbage while I shop I can go to Home Depot where at least the prices are a bit cheaper. Another thing that bothers me about this incident is that Hyde Park is a really hard place to run a business. Both long-standing stores and brand new ones seem to go out of business on a regular basis. When there is an employee like this representing the company, it makes it that much harder for the company to bring in repeat customers. I'm sure that is hard enough for many companies. read more

People here are very friendly and helpful. I came in when it was snowing and was practically nagged to accept help carrying my purchases to the car. Also, the cashier signed me up for Ace Rewards when she noticed that some of my items would be on sale with the reward card. Obviously they are not going to carry the same range of items as the big boxes, but it's nice to be able to patronize your neighborhood store sometimes. read more

So I've seen those commercials where going to ACE is just like going to a neighbors. BALONEY! I went into the ACE Hardware in Hyde Park for some PVC pipe and zip ties. The pipe was much two long. I asked a man if someone could cut it for me or if I could cut it myself. The man belted 'We can but not right now! Everyone is gone to lunch!' I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I told him that if I drive over to Home Depot I was certain everyone wouldn't be at lunch. 'That's what you should do then!' he blurted and walked away. Disgraceful. I drove the extra miles to the Home Depot on 87th Street and they took care of me swiftly. Neighbors indeed. read more

This hardware store is ok in a pinch - just be prepared to pay more, more, more money for their products. Customer Service is pretty helpful, but that still doesn't justify the outright price insanity at this hardware. If you're into saving moolah, consider an alternative like Lowes or Home Depot. I purchased some deck waterproofing from this place and the quality was quite poor, then I noticed that the brand was ACE itself!! Suggestion: Avoid the ACE Brand products, they are cheap and not worth your money. Winter is coming and this place sure will price-gouge on their winter supplies, from shovels to salt and everything in between, they get deep in your pockets. read more

Being the granddaughter of a contractor and the daughter of an architect, I've spent a decent amount of time in hardware stores throughout the years. This hardware store pretty much always has what I need, and sometimes at better prices than the big chain stores. It helps me with my aim in buying locally since I can walk here from my house without too much muss or fuss. The staff here has always been very helpful to me and that goes for a ton. I guess they see a slight-of-frame girl who looks to be about 17 and they assume I need assistance. I just like that they save me time roaming about the aisles. read more

There are two different pages for this same store so beware. I am posting the same review on both pages: As I'm having my place painted I realize I need another gallon of paint. The painters I hired only use Benjamin Moore so I think of the closest Ace Hardware to me, in Hyde Park. This Ace Hardware store is the worst. The guy could not follow clear instructions. I said, "I want you to color match a Valspar color with Benjamin Moore flat paint." A simple request, but oh no, he managed to screw it up. After repeatedly detailing the color name and number, and requesting flat paint, he mixed it, matched it and gave me EXTERIOR PAINT for an interior job! He never asked if I wanted interior or exterior so I didn't know I had to explain that too! Instead, I see a can of B.Moore paint that says flat, it has the correct color, I assume it's right. My painter, however, pointed out that it's wrong. Now, do I hold up the job, pay the painters more in an attempt to correct this idiot's mistake? No, I suck it up knowing never to enter this store of low IQ, shiftless workers again. The upside, now my kitchen is waterproof. read more

This hardware store has most everything you could need. I've gone in for wheels, paint, rust remover, sand paper, potting soil, drill bits, paint, spray paint... anything you could think of for a DIY project. I've found the employees to be extremely helpful -- either approaching me directly to ask if I needed help, or accessible if I need to go up and ask for help reaching something, or for advice on whatever project I'm doing. I've made returns with no problems. Not sure why the reviews are all over the place, but I come in here a couple times a month and have never had a bad experience in 1+ year. read more

It is nice to have a local hardware store and this one carries unusual, hard-to-find thing for older homes. I also like to favor the local businesses over the large chains. Unfortunately, I will not return to this store, Elston Ace Hardware in Hyde Park, as long as Jose is the manager or even working there. He is not helpful and is extremely rude. My go-to hardware store. Service is tops, never had a problem with the many keys they've made for me over the years, and they've nearly always had the parts and tools I needed for home or car. If I need lumber, PVC pipe, cabinetry, etc., I head to a big box place, but the price difference on the small stuff I usually get is less than the gas I save, even now at $2.15/gallon--not to mention my time.
