I've been going here for a while. I love that Jerry acts like one of my old school uncles. Him and his boys sitting around the shop just shooting the breeze all day; it makes you think of some Archer Bunker Era TV show. I went in last year looking for a bike and instead of letting me pick, Jerry asked me how I use my bike based on that he pointed me to a '60s cruiser. I was a bit surprised but then he broke down why which gave me confidence in his suggestion. My previous bike had modern handle bars and I ride a lot. I would get tension headaches a lot too. With the bike Jerry sold me, they stopped. I've gone back several times for repairs, upgrades and such and he's really about customer service. He remembers everybody but has no clue what your name is. One big thing to remember is time is relative to Jerry. He opens when he feels like it, closes when he feels like it, and finishes when he feels like it. So just like with my uncles, I've learned to call him when he says he'll call, budget in extra time that he'll have my bike and call before I go to make sure he's there. The plus side of this is I've called that I can't make it by closing time and he's stayed late for me to pick up or drop off whatever. read more

Take your average Ace Hardware store and squish it down into a mom-and-pop tiny hole-in-the-wall store and that's Windy City Hardware. They've got a rather decent selection of hardware stuff that's not available in many locations around Bridgeport without having to travel very far. The prices may not be that competitive with big chain hardware stores, but when I need a random tool or item for a home improvement project and time is of the essence, this place has had what I've needed. The guy who runs it (I think - he's just been there every time I've been there) is also pretty helpful too and will help you navigate the cramped store (or just retrieve it for you). read more

I called Windy City a couple days after the blizzard last week to find out if they had any snow shovels in stock so I could dig my car out. The owner (the wife) gave me the prices of their shovels. I asked what time they closed & she told me 5. It was already around 4:30 & she asked how far away I was. I was still at work downtown so there was no way I could have made it there on time but I could tell that she was prepared to stay open late to wait for me. She gave the phone to her husband who asked when I'd be close and then he gave me his cellphone number and told me to call him when I was there and he would just meet me there and reopen the store. A couple hours later I met him (I believe his name is Jerry) in front of the store and he showed me what they had and gave me his recommendations. After taking his suggestion on which shovel to buy he gave me a deal on a one that had a little rust on it from a flood they'd had. The shovel worked the same rust or no rust and we both knew this. We chatted for a little while longer. We talked about each of our backgrounds and he gave me some advice on life. Then he had to get back to dinner with his wife across the street and I had a date with snow. It was by far the best experience I've had in a hardware store and as long as I live close to Bridgeport, they'll get my business. Thanks guys! read more

Recently I had a leak problem in the basement and my contractor needed some plumbing parts. On our way to the local Home Depot, we drove by this little hardware store, and for a moment I thought "Instead of going to the big box store, why don't we save some time and stop by to support a local small business?" Thought that was the right thing to do, and boy was that a mistake!!! My contractor went in to buy the plumbing parts (less than $20) while I waited in the car. Later we returned to my basement where he figured out a different way to repair the leak, so we ended up not using anything he had bought from Windy City Hardware. Before leaving, my contractor left me with all the parts and the receipt so I can return them. I went back to Windy City Hardware that afternoon to try to return the purchase, but as soon as I explained my intention, the shop owner, a middle aged man, told me that he would not process the return and that I should instead return the next day when his wife would be around to handle the refund. Apparently his wife had been the one to sell the stuff to my contractor that morning, and according to him, his wife liked to give discount to customers so only she would know how much we REALLY PAID for the merchandise. I pointed out repeatedly that I had the receipt showing the dollar amount, and he said that the receipt MEANT NOTHING TO HIM!!! If this is not bad enough, it gets worse. I told him my contractor was from out of town and a first time customer, so there was no reason for his wife to give him any discount, and he said he wouldn't believe what I said. Then I asked him to call his wife to verify how much we had paid for the merchandise if he had any doubt, and he said his wife was with her parents and he WOULD NOT CALL to bother her. Then he went on to BLAME ME for NOT BOTHERING to make another trip to return the stuff despite I'd told him I had to work the next day. As you can imagine, the conversation was increasingly frustrating and aggravating, and when I finally let out a "WOW" at the ridiculousness of the situation, he said that was nothing to wow about, and "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?" At that, I finally left with the merchandise. Someone here pointed out that he was a former cop, so THAT EXPLAINS A LOT. Turning your customers away despite they have the receipt solely because of some remotely possible "discount" which, if existed at all, should have been reflected on the receipt anyway, and then refusing to do anything to verify the existence of the said discount, and then rudely shifting the blame to the customers for not wanting to waste time on another trip, and then callously and arrogantly saying "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?" is pure bad business. I am all for people spending a little more to support neighborhood mom and pop stores, but if this is the kind of "customer service" they offer, then I don't see the point. If you are thinking about giving them your business, consider yourself warned. read more

My bike brakes were dead and i needed to replace them. I went around between this store and Blue Cycle a few blocks north. This shop had the best prices for the parts (~$7) and tools i needed. They also had the best service! The owner of the store offered to teach me how to install the breaks myself so i don't have to pay for them to do it for me. and since i am a handy kind of guy i agreed and decided to do it on the spot with him guiding me. Really nice and really personal service! Considerably cheaper than Blue Cycle! read more

This place is great for both hardware (for a small place they really have a lot of items that are well priced) and also bike sales/repair. Jerry took a look at my girlfriend's bike she purchased on craigslist and gave us a great deal on a tune-up and brake lever replacement. In all honesty though take a look at his bikes in the window too...because they are priced well for having Jerry tune them up prior. We even came in to pick it up earlier than expected and Jerry was kind enough to offer for us to bring it back in again for last minute touch ups. Mechanically, though, he did a fantastic job-- definitely knows what he's doing. He even took time to show us the workings of the bike (as we aren't too familiar to road bikes). He also gave us some tips on general care amongst friendly chit-chat...and some steel wool to take with us. Thanks Jerry. read more

The owner was very cool and friendly, even staying open a few minutes late when I called ahead to see if I could get a key made. The owner, Jerry, was both personable and knowledgeable. He provided a fair quote and after a few days, I came back and was pleased to see my bike fully functional again. I walked in looking to get my tires trued and nothing more. The owner told me to bring my bike in and that it would run about 8 dollars total. When I brought it in a few moments later he was quick and attentive. He actually pulled out his spoke wrenches and taught me how to true my own wheels, which was very nice. And at the end of it all he didn't charge me anything! The owner is a nice guy, a bit opinionated, hahaha, probably don't bring your fixie to him looking for parts or repairs, you are liable to get an earful about how deadly he finds them. Just moved to the neighborhood and needed help with the hardware that came with the flower boxes we bought. They didn't fit onto our railings. Boy did Jerry hook us up! He cut the metal for us in the store even though all we bought from him was a utility knife. Small business owners like this one are one of the things that make this community so great. I called this place after receiving a recommendation from another shop to look for a used bike in my size. I stopped in and brought my old clunker. The owner, Jerry, was very personable, knowledgeable, and passionate about bikes. He gave me a great deal on an 80's Schwinn with brand new tires and all tuned up. He had no qualms about answering any questions I had and seemed to really care about my purchase. He had a certain air of experience I got from him that I didn't seem to get from other places. I recently purchased a wonderfully revamped older bike from Jerry. He's well educated in the bike fix-up business and does a great job with them. Jerry and his family business makes you feel welcome as if your visiting an old friend. Jerry is very open during the fixing process and will tell you exactly what needs to be done to get the bike looking good and running right. He will even let you pick the tire and handle bar tape color if you ask about them. The couple that runs this place were so helpful and nice. I was on my way to the Sox game when I got a flat tire on my bike. I asked someone on the street if there was a place that I could go to real quick and they directed me there. The male owner helped me find the right inner tube and helped me get it on without charging me for labor. The inner tube was as resonably priced as anywhere. We even ended up chatting for a bit and he gave me some good bike upkeep tips. An amazing experience, I would recommend this place to anyone who needs some basic bike services or hardware. read more
