This lunch was a special one as most of the family had not been together for over 2 years and our expectations of service and comfort for the lunch, were of the highest. With a weeks email communication with the Inn, on the size of the party (14) and the pre order menu, I felt comfortable that we would have a wonderful time.
Unfortunately this was not so, when we arrived the table was set for 11 only and then (in a cramped and confined area) reverted to a table to seat 14. My family were now in a setting that is not conducive to the enjoyable social lunch we had expected. All of us were rubbing elbows to eat our meal with very little conversation due to the placement of the table.
The service; why do they have a pre planned menu when the delivery of the meal took hours to the table? Is there a staffing problem? I had to get up and speak to the host (who was very pleasant) about the time it took to have the "the start" and "main event" to the table and was told that "another table was ahead of us?" It does not make sense to have a pre planned menu if you cannot get the order out in a timely fashion. The original booking was for 12:30pm and the start did not get to the table until after 1pm (which was only for 5 guests and on the pre plan menu) and then the main event another 30 minutes after the start was cleared. Also, the carrots (seasonal veg) served were hardly cooked at all not even near "al dente", the Cumin roasted home-grown carrots and parsnips were cooked to a burn and not very pleasant to taste. The presentation of the lunch was confusing with so many platters of veg and potatoes on iron skillets. A suggestion? Have the lunch served on a plate and tureens of veg and potatoes in the centre of the table, for the guests to serve from, if you are not plating them in the kitchen.
Needless to say, I am unable to recommend others to the Elveden Inn for their dining experience and that there will not be a repeat visit for us to the restaurant. read more
