It's not particularly a cryptic shop name. It sells both music and literature. We were looking for a rather obscure 80's song on vinyl and I knew it was on a couple of compilations but that's just because I'd done hours of research on the internet but to no avail of finding somewhere to buying it. The GENIUS behind the counter came up to me after a bit of looking around the shop and asked if I needed any help, to which I said "oh, no thanks, I'm just looking for (insert song name here)" he turned to me and without even digging far into his brain, reeled off a list of where I could find him. The human brain is more powerful that the internet but until coming in here, I'd totally forgot.

Adding to the list of enthused music fanatics, I can report that Elvis Shakespeare is a fountain of all music and book resources! With an amazing, impressively large catalogue of books, music, DVD's and fanzies all for low prices, what is even more impressive is that the empassioned owner seems to know everything...about everything. He is like a walking encylopedia and has an incredible capacity to store every pop culture reference since the 50s in his brain. He could reel off music from the top of his head like it was the most natural thing in the world. Absolutely great for a raid and with some unusual old treasures (including a noteworthy collection of old fanzines) this is what all music stores should be like! Pivotal amongst music nuts in Edinburgh and somewhere I always visit when I'm through, I love this place.

I salute whoever first realised that a shop like Elvis Shakespeare would work. By combining two of my loves - old music and old literature, they have inadvertantly created one of my favourate shops. Its not big, its not nessicarly cheap (rarer = more expensive) and its not full of the latest pop but thats what makes this place so special. There is really a lot of stuff here - books, dvd's, cd's, vynils - you name it, they have it and I'm pretty sure you will find something that will make you love this place first time you come here. Whats more, they know thier stuff - its almost scary, but ask a question (the more obscure the better) and you will get an answer! Excellent!

I first discovered this last year by mistake. I was texting while walking and tripped over the box of Vinyl out on the street ( Not the first time that Black Sabbath have floored me). I was about to get all mad until I realised what it was. When i went inside I easily spent an hour in here, painstakingly sifting through every record, cd and DVD. I got Night of the Living Dead for a quid and 2001 for a fiver and had a great chat with the guy behind the counter. Go here first before going to HMV, you'll probably find what you need.

Great ever changing collection records and books. Make yourself a coffee and listen to some vinyl. Friendly, welcoming staff too.

This shop appears to have forgotten this fact and still offers the rarer CDs and records at high prices and in today's market it doesn't stand a chance. The owner is very helpful and knowledgeable so despite the fact the stacks of boxes make general browsing impossible, if there is something you are after it can be found here. However, for the rarer CDs you're looking to pay on the wrong side of £10 with no negotiation on price. Simply put, the internet has made this shop redundant.

Or, if you're not bothered sifting through the alphabetized mountains of vinyl, just name an album and Doug will know exactly where it is. I have never seen some many consecutive copies of desirable titles. There was not one artist I named that he was unable to locate I'm his store. Such a fantastic experience and will make for a great digging story. Left the city with no money because of this one store. Don't take my word for it, ask around the Edinburgh vinyl community and theyll know Doug on a first name basis

Personally I think the extra money is worth it in the quality of books you get here. Of the book sections you obviously have fiction books and this is a good selection of good fiction books (you often get a lot of rubbish in some charity shops), but the standout sections are the Biographies, Education and Travel section. If you are into books and want specific types of books rather than just wanting a book to pass the time this will be more your shop. If you are the latter then there are cheaper places to go. I would recommend coming here, being more of the former, as the books here are great books - just the other day I got an autobiography and a cook book I'd wanted for ages, both the sort of books that don't come around very often and I was greatful for them even though they did cost a fair bit more than books elsewhere.

I'm always impressed at how organized both shops are, and it's so pleasant to be in there an hour can pass without one really noticing. On a recent visit, the books of the display shelf made me giggle; they were copies of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer! With the new movie Ecilpse in cinemas, any other book store would have done the same, and you get the feeling Oxfam's attempting to narrow the gap so that shoppers can feel as though they're in a first hand bookshop! I did wish I'd come here when I started my Twilight collection, as I'd have saved a lot of money; most of the books in here are in fantastic condition, and at an average of £2 a copy, any frayed pages will certainly be overlooked by me!

In a time of movie piracy and big chains I am surprised and relieved that this place has survived and thrived. My friends and I usually come here for our movie needs and it's up to date with what's out and popular, and the staff has always been friendly and quite chatty. Unlike their large competitor up the street they won't spent an age tapping away on the computer so you can get your movie. The only thing I can hold against it is it's early closing time in winter. But the selection is great, at affordable prices as well. Be warned though it's not all in alphabetical order so don't be shy to ask if you can't find what you are after!

Although it is relatively small inside, the shop boasts a vast selection of movies and they are always advertises the latest releases in their window. The video's are cheap, costing £1.50 to rent a night, and are of excellent quality - I have never rented a video from here which has been fuzzy or jumpy. The owner is incredibly friendly and the customer service is excellent with the staff always willing to help you find a DVD or advise on which films you are most likely to enjoy. The only reason why I haven't given Vogue Video five stars is because they only rent videos to the Newington area, so you probably won't be able to rent a movie from here if you live in Morningside or Leith which is a shame as it is a great alternative to the corporate giants of film renting..
