Vinyl Villains is one of the few music stores I've come across in Edinburgh that actually sells Vinyl records. They've been at the location for over twenty years, and the owner amusingly told me that whilst he's got a good memory of it's beginning and the last few years, his recollection of the years inbetween is a bit hazy. This store also sells used and new Dvd's as well as the dying breed that is the music CD. They'll even buy them from you, but with business being a bit slow I'm not sure how much they would be willing to pay for. I was a big fan of the music that was playing while I was there, and I feel any fans of 60s/70s classics would definitely find something in here.

As I was strolling down Elm Row towards Valvona and Crolla this shop caught my eye. Its window display had vinyl covers from albums by the stones and also by a large amount of eighties indie bands! For any true music enthusiast you just had to give this place a go. Inside, the shop is not that big, but it is full of vinyl and also has a range of CD's and DVD's. I spent, what felt like an age looking through the selection of 12's (I love looking at the album art work). Apart from your normal vinyl albums, this shop also had picture disks and some rare live bootleg albums. It had a large range of vinyls from Metallica for some bizarre reason, but more importantly had a great range of Ramones, Siouxsie and the banshees and Sex Pistols albums. I wasn't looking to buy anything but I ended up walking out with a bootleg live album of the Smiths, well worth the £14.99 I paid for it (For some people this might seem a lot, but any music enthusiast, paying this much for a rarity or boot leg album is well worth it). As I left the shop, the indie shop assistant didn't speak but just gave a very cool nod, acknowledging, I think, my good music taste! Vinyl is coming back into fashion, and this shop is great for anybody wanting to build up their vinyl collection. This shop also buys unwanted vinyl, so it is a great source for finding that rare vinyl record you have been wanting. It also provides fantastic plastic bags, brilliant art work! Apart from the plastic bags, Vinyl Villains was a great find, and any record collector will fall in love with it!

First of all, nobody better buy that Master of Puppets LP in the window, you've been warned. Second, this is a cracking wee shop. Great selection of old and new, don't go in here with money because you'll lose it. Unfortunately the store does attract the following 2 people. 1) Vinyl Wanks - People that never bought a CD player. 2) Student Wanks - That know nothing about music, or Vinyl, but like to pretend they do. These two specific groups are hyper critical about whatever record you decide to pick up and make their opinions of about the band vocal. Simply ignore them. The staff went out of their way to make sure I found what I was looking for, so for that they get 5 stars!

All records are in fantastic condition and they seem to have everything, from Joan Armatrading to Pink Floyd and Metallica as Stuart said.

This shop appears to have forgotten this fact and still offers the rarer CDs and records at high prices and in today's market it doesn't stand a chance. The owner is very helpful and knowledgeable so despite the fact the stacks of boxes make general browsing impossible, if there is something you are after it can be found here. However, for the rarer CDs you're looking to pay on the wrong side of £10 with no negotiation on price. Simply put, the internet has made this shop redundant.

Or, if you're not bothered sifting through the alphabetized mountains of vinyl, just name an album and Doug will know exactly where it is. I have never seen some many consecutive copies of desirable titles. There was not one artist I named that he was unable to locate I'm his store. Such a fantastic experience and will make for a great digging story. Left the city with no money because of this one store. Don't take my word for it, ask around the Edinburgh vinyl community and theyll know Doug on a first name basis

Personally I think the extra money is worth it in the quality of books you get here. Of the book sections you obviously have fiction books and this is a good selection of good fiction books (you often get a lot of rubbish in some charity shops), but the standout sections are the Biographies, Education and Travel section. If you are into books and want specific types of books rather than just wanting a book to pass the time this will be more your shop. If you are the latter then there are cheaper places to go. I would recommend coming here, being more of the former, as the books here are great books - just the other day I got an autobiography and a cook book I'd wanted for ages, both the sort of books that don't come around very often and I was greatful for them even though they did cost a fair bit more than books elsewhere.

I'm always impressed at how organized both shops are, and it's so pleasant to be in there an hour can pass without one really noticing. On a recent visit, the books of the display shelf made me giggle; they were copies of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer! With the new movie Ecilpse in cinemas, any other book store would have done the same, and you get the feeling Oxfam's attempting to narrow the gap so that shoppers can feel as though they're in a first hand bookshop! I did wish I'd come here when I started my Twilight collection, as I'd have saved a lot of money; most of the books in here are in fantastic condition, and at an average of £2 a copy, any frayed pages will certainly be overlooked by me!

In a time of movie piracy and big chains I am surprised and relieved that this place has survived and thrived. My friends and I usually come here for our movie needs and it's up to date with what's out and popular, and the staff has always been friendly and quite chatty. Unlike their large competitor up the street they won't spent an age tapping away on the computer so you can get your movie. The only thing I can hold against it is it's early closing time in winter. But the selection is great, at affordable prices as well. Be warned though it's not all in alphabetical order so don't be shy to ask if you can't find what you are after!

Although it is relatively small inside, the shop boasts a vast selection of movies and they are always advertises the latest releases in their window. The video's are cheap, costing £1.50 to rent a night, and are of excellent quality - I have never rented a video from here which has been fuzzy or jumpy. The owner is incredibly friendly and the customer service is excellent with the staff always willing to help you find a DVD or advise on which films you are most likely to enjoy. The only reason why I haven't given Vogue Video five stars is because they only rent videos to the Newington area, so you probably won't be able to rent a movie from here if you live in Morningside or Leith which is a shame as it is a great alternative to the corporate giants of film renting..
