I'm big on architecturally distinct buildings and houses of worship hold special interest for me. It's Downtown and easily accessible for visits or worship. St. Andrews is the oldest continuing Presbyterian Church (1889) and congregation (1866) in Victoria. It's a cool looking 19th Century building, featuring magnificent stain glass windows. It's open for tours July, August, Easter and Christmas and by separate arrangement throughout the year.

Last restored in 1993, it is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Victoria area and a National Historic Site since 1990. Gayle and I stopped during Gayle one of our long walks in and around Victoria. The Cathedral cost CAD$ 81,052 to build at the time and the design borrowed much from the medieval architecture of European churches. The double asymmetrical towers are typical of Quebec churches and a characteristic of the High Victorian Gothic style. This was an attempt to follow the "unfinished" look that made fourteenth and fifteenth century churches popular. The nave is seventy-two feet long, with a rose window. The main tower boasts a 175-foot spire that was originally designed to hold a clock and a set of bells.

They started service 30 minutes before the time, and we felt it was inappropriate to continue taking pictures. You also have to pay $2.00 for the Brief History and Guide, which includes the map of the Church. It's a great piece of Architectural work of the Victorian Gothic style. We wished we would have been able to continue our tour to enjoy all the stain-glass work and to see the First Nation representation pieces.

Staffed by church volunteers - all very kind. I saw the volunteers working with an older man, a regular sale visitor. He was very confused and they took such good care of him. Kudos James Bay Church! They place children's items, sale, large items and things defying category outside. Inside you will find well organized rooms for men's & household, women's items, books and a "boutique" room. Serendipity would be the key word here for me. James Bay Church's sale is the kind of place where something finds you...I don't recommend going with a specific list. It's not that type of sale - the inventory is good, but not that deep. Prices are excellent and the selection is quite decent considering this is a single church operation. You will pay far less here than at Value Village and you see your money going to support a very inclusive, very community-involved church - absolutely lovely.
