It's always a bit of a crap shoot when vacationing and trying to find a good spot for dinner. Emporium was a winner for us today. We made a reservation online although when we arrived it wasn't too busy and we were able to get a seat outside on the sidewalk. As most places do not have A/C in town, this was preferable to the somewhat warm restaurant. Our nice server Michaela took good care of us and made some good food recommendations. We started with the prawn toasts (indescribable but REALLY good), then followed with Fish and chips (light and good) and the coconut chicken salad which was shaved cucumber, poached chicken, coconut, and peanuts with a light refreshing dressing-quite good (according to my spouse). A bottle of Rose topped things off. The menu has quite a lot of choices so it should be easy for most people to find something that interests them. Nice food, nice service, nice meal. read more

Location is great, in the heart of the Art Deco city center, a half block from the tourist information office. Service was fine. A little inattentive, but we got everything we asked for, we just had to ask for everything. We had fish and chips. There was a lot of fish, flaky and perfectly cooked. The chips (fries for us Americans) were really really good, seasoned and crispy outside, potato-y inside. All-in-all, a welcoming a reasonable lunch. read more

The interior is really interesting and cool! Everyone in our group was happy with their choice of dish: pizza, duck and salad. The service was friendly and timely. You may prance, stroll or simply gallivant through Napier streets. You switch dinner plans because the Emporium offers a large spacious, trinket-filled vault cleverly lit with amber lighting. Do it. Great venue to come in a group or small party. Plenty of room though can get loud with crowds. Food. A menu that attempts at being adventurous but just doesn't want to cut the umbilical cord. Had the leek and chicken terrine to start and fish with a polenta cake. The terrine was good, meaty and lean with sweet flavours. The fish properly seared but a bit too much brown butter. The polenta was very savory. Wine list is ok. And decent pours by the glass. And staff are massively accommodating. Very cozy place well worth a visit. Expect $60 per person - if you are going to do it right. Which should be your life's goal. read more

Enjoyed this place on a sunny morning for breakfast. The interior design is very cool, with a vintage feel, I loved it! The food was good. Not exceptional but pretty good. We were staying at the Masonic Hotel upstairs so took advantage of their special 18$ breakfast buffet. It was perfect ! From granola and yogurt with fresh fruit to eggs and bacon, everyone can find their pick! The manager made us feel very comfortable and checked on us to ensure we had everything we wanted and had a good time. Much appreciated! I have to admit the 4th star is for the design, I'm a sucker for this style, oh well! read more

Not sure how to phrase this. The Emporium is closed. Doesn't exist. A good Japanese restaurant now occupies the space. Good Japanese but all prior observations are irrelevant. The sashimi and tempura were good. The desserts are really unusual and tasty. read more

The atmosphere and ambiance will win you over as soon as you walk in the door. An Art Deco gem that has made Napier famous (in New Zealand) the hotel and bar/restaurant boasts a 1920's inspired cocktail list with a fine selection of local Hawkes Bay wines and NZ beers. I had a raspberry Moscow Mule, the origin of all vodka cocktails (Moscow Mule). This rendition with raspberry was refreshing and well made. For dinner I had a roasted chicken and Brie pizza. I hold fast, that some day I will find a really good pizza in New Zealand. Although this was a tasty pizza, I won't give it top marks. read more

Emporium was highly recommend on my breeze through town by my Airbnb hosts. It's a well located bar with lots of fun, Art Deco flair. I had a glass of Te Whara Ra Pinot Gris, a Trinity Hill Sav Blanc, and a rocket salad w/pear and Brie. I asked if it was a "boring" salad, but it was delicious! Generous portion of rocket, olive oil drizzle, thinly sliced fresh pear, and spiced walnuts. It was a simple but tasty dish. Everything else looked a bit on the pricy side for what I felt like paying that night, but the menu had some good options for sure. The bartenders were really friendly and on top of it. I'm curious about this breakfast buffet everyone is raving about! I'd love to stay at the hotel, Masonic, or check out their sister bar Rose next door. read more

My husband and I agree our meal here was the best meal we had during our whole trip in New Zealand! I had the grilled bay fish, which was light and delicious. My husband insists on recommending the 12 hour braised lamb shoulder. We finished with the deep fried ice cream and whiskey caramel sauce, which was divine! Sunday night in quiet Napier. Tried somewhere else first for a round but didn't feel the vibe. Glad we came back and went all in for dinner. Best Lamb I have ever had. Excellent service, not overattentive or pushy, reasonable and well-humoured. I feel it would be harsh to doc half a point for not completely nailing my French 75, but the ambiance and awesome service more than makes up for any flavour I thought might have been missing. Greeted at the door with a promise to secure a table within a few minutes. Made ourselves comfortable at the bar with a moderate list of beverages to choose from, wine obviously local (and delicious) beer, not too bad. The bar tender was talkative and entertaining. Our table became available and we sat by the window, a waiter came by and we ordered the lamb and the fish... My god, the fish was moist, flavourful and polenta/ravioli spectacular. My PIC (partner in crime) had the lamb and was more than impressed with the offering - melty, butterery, gorgeous. A French 75 was ordered and here they fell down a little, not bad, but not legit. Dessert, ahh the epitome of sugar and fat in one delicious sitting... we shared the coffee crème brûlée and holy eff it was magnificent. The cream filed biscuit beside the brûlée was actually as good as it was. Um, so yeahhhh, get yourselves in here if you ever find yourself in Napier, NZ. Chur bro (as the kiwis say). read more

Slow service, overpriced menu, and generally has potential to be much nicer, but (manager aside) the staff are not up to the standard this place should be offering based on its prices. I wouldn't haven eaten here again except we were staying in the Masonic hotel next door and breakfast was included. It was similarly disappointing. read more

Stopped by for lunch because the location and the decor were excellent. The service and the food were outstanding. The outside seating also provided a great view of the waterfront. Definitely a place to eat when visiting Napier. It was recommended to us by friends as a place to go and we were extremely happy that we did. read more

Breakfast menu is great, big hearty portions of granola (if that's your thing) and good strong coffee - lunch is a bit of a let down - the quality is there, but the selection is quite limited and heavy on fish....I hate fish! This is a great causal dining place to get good food and friendly service. We ordered a pizza and salads and had plenty to eat. In addition our waitress was extra helpful and friendly. Please take note the salads are very large and very fresh. We would have ordered only one between us if we had known. No matter, we took home some very good pizza anyway.
