The quality of Turkish eateries along Green Lanes in Harringay, has made this stretch not just a Turkish meeting and shopping precedent, but a go to destination for shish kebab, doner and mixed grills for Londoners wanting tasty pides, kebabs, stews and meze. Having moved to this area nine months ago I can claim to have eaten in all of the Turkish restaurants on this strip. I could see opportunity for one more profitable business provided it is a large (bigger than one shop unit in size), but excellent priced and tasting destination restaurant. I was excited in late November as two shop units begun to morph into a classy, clean, barren dining room and kitchen. It opened on 30th December (surely a ploy to in the future write 'since 2011') and I write after a lunchtime visit on 31st December 2011. Devran was a hugely disappointing dining experience. In fact it was so bad this review includes some hints to the management on how to improve because the two managers by the door on exit didn't hold it open to thank us for our custom or ask what we thought of our visit. The facts are this; in an area where the best thrive, others won't survive. I hope it was opening weekend issues and Devran improves by the time you read this because if not, it will be gone by September 2012. So the pluses that built to the excitement include big clean window frontage showing the bbq and five daily stews. The name of the eatery changes colour at night. The staffs have trendy little waistcoats. There are lots of staff (15+) and when paying they take credit cards (only Gokyuzu and Antepiller over the road do this too, most are cash only). The fact of the matter is that this place is style over content as we learnt and whilst it would do OK in South London, if the early mistakes we encountered are not ironed out, the business will not survive. We ordered a starter of mixed meze and two stews along with drinks. Sadly we didn't start with the starters as it was delivered after the lukewarm stews. For some reason salad and bread (usually delivered with drinks/starters in other Turkish restaurants on the Green Lanes strip) didn't turn up till after the main course. Rice also came on a separate plate. Not sure why, but this was not hot either and meant there was more plates on the table than the table for two had space for. Now for the clincher the food simply wasn't as tasty as others on this strip. Salad was soaked in Vingerette. One lamb stew barely featured lamb and the other had peppers and potatoes added to pad out the lamb and aubergine mix. On our visit, the waiting staff were not busy and desperate for something to do. In competitive dining rooms on Green Lanes waiters whizz around offering more bread/salad and always offer Turkish tea on the house after the meal delivering it with a smile and a wipe down of the table. Not here. Not today. They were more concerned about taking back the excess plates they had brought to the table and my wife had to ask for tea. Poor table didn't get cleaned until we had paid. I am sure this is just teething pains for the new restaurant. There has been no promotion to local residents and people are trying it instead of others to see what it is like. Therefore, judge on reviews after this one because either they will say the same thing and nothing improves or the owner will take my advice: Shut for a day. Take all 15+ staff to Gokyuzu across the road for lunch and then onto to Diyarbakir two hundred metres away to learn what your customers expect from you. Then invite local people (I might be persuaded to return) to see what you do and how you do it as good, if not better than the rest. Otherwise, I fear this place may have failed by the time you have read this review.

The owner is a very sweet and happy man who loves shaking hands and holding doors open. He's seen my partner so many times, he now hugs him when we leave. There is a large selection of vegetarian & vegan & veganizable meze and a small selection of mains. I usually go for the "fiesta" as it is the most food for money and I can swap the halloumi for roasted veggies, no problem. So much food, so much deliciousness. But be careful everyone! The most amazing freshly baked Turkish bread is placed in front of you before the meal, along with a spicy tomato dip and olives. It's so good, it's hard to stop, and then there is no room left in your tummy for the feast of your main! Also, for drinks- the house red is quite tasty for the cheapest option. Every time someone is visiting us from out of town and we want a nice meal, we bring them here. We've brought everyone from California to Japan here and always celebrate hubby's birthday here as well. I hope you will treat your friends!

Our options were pretty limited, but Yildiz was open and we decided to give it a shot. Neither of us was at all disappointed. I had the chicken kebabs while my buddy went with minced lamb. Both came with rice, bread, salad, onions, and all sorts of goodness. They grill the meats over charcoal right in the front of the store, so you know it's being done fresh. My friend let me try his lamb too, and it definitely had some spice to it, but was very delicious. The service was pretty quick, though we were the only ones there at the time. You just have to be patient while they grill your meats. And price wise it was very reasonable for lunch. All in all, this was one of the best meals we had in London. If I'm ever heading back to the neighborhood (which would almost certainly be for an Arsenal match), I'll be sure to stop in again.

Combines good value, efficient service, varied cuts of fresh meats (Haven't tried the (ram's?) testes yet!) Service is always friendly bordering on jovial/cheeky. Fairly ordinary in terms of decor and atmosphere, but good for honest unpretentious eats and a great takeaway number, just give them 15min, one mains order and a side can easily feed two. The best dishes all pass over a seemingly eternal charcoal fire. Deffinately have the lamb ribs, they pack flavour. Get a skewer of kidney and onion to go with. mmm. If you have an intestinal worm that needs to be fed, have the impossibly heavy Iskender Kebab.

I had walked by this little place many times and always wondered if it were any good...well today was the day to give it actually a try...and boy am I glad I did!!! The Today's special sign on the street had actually lured me in: Vegetable Moussaka. I figured, since I make the best meat moussaka in the whole wide world, I might as well get inspired by some vegetable moussaka...and boy did I get inspired!!! There were only a few other customers in the restaurant and I thus had the waiter's full attention. In fact, the service that I received here was so attentive and so friendly that even a high-end restaurant could learn from them: the waiter changed the cutlery, refilled my water, served the plate facing the right way, offered condiments...etc. But I am digressing...anyway, I ordered the Tabbouleh Salad as a starter and that was already pretty awesome. I mean, it's a rather standard dish, yet the ingredients were well balanced: it had a nice zest to it and the pita bread that was served with it was smooth and delicious. Then I got my moussaka...and believe me I prayed for it to be as good as the previous experience...and boy did my prayers work! Seriously, the moussaka was the best I've ever had (aside from my meat moussaka, of course). The eggplant was melting on my tongue and the bechamel/cheese sauce was heavenly as well. The waiter offered my some chilli-sauce on the side, which I happily stirred into my rice - and I had yet to experience yet another culinary climax! Well, sitting there all by myself, I had also the leisure of watching the waiter prepare a couple of coffee drinks. And I was positively surprised has how well he prepared the Latte Macchiato...very carefully did he first pour steamed hot milk, topped it off with some foam and only then did he actually - very carefully - pour the espresso into the glass; the end-result was a perfectly three-tiered Latte - the way it is supposed to be served if I were to rule the world. (Only the straw was missing!) Alright, enough said...but just to reemphasise how much I liked this restaurant: my throbbing headache, which I suffered from upon entering the establishment, had vanished by the time the check came...a mere £10.90! ...boy am I glad I came here!!!

There is always that element of risk, seemingly more so the further away you go from Dalston. It's always a lovely surprise therefore when you find a really high quality and innovative Turkish menu in the depths of North London. The Adana wrap is delicious. Sometimes pita bread is too much! A lighter surrounding makes the whole thing more moreish. I could literally eat about five. The service is friendly and warm, and there is a good range of specials at reasonable prices. The decor isn't too bad either. Although still not up to some of the legendary Dalston Turkish grills, this is still a surpisingly good restaurant in a surprising location. Do not underestimate the power of the Adana wrap.
