They have a gym and a nice pool with jacuzzi sauna and steam room. There is lots of food! I love the food at this place, they do good cooked breakfast with very smart waiters and again, great fun to hang out with when you are stuck at a hotel for a period of time. The TV got knocked out once, annoying but it is an old place, and I was staying in the bit they were about to sell. The living room is so cool! They have Tennyson and other famous Brits all on the walls and nice furnishings and carpet. WIFI! I debated giving this four stars because the decor in my room was horrific - yellow wallpaper and low hung ceiling supports, plus a bit of weird mold in the shower. However, I did stay for one night in the other end of the hotel, and that was great, clean and even had windows (they were tiny in my room unfortunately). Since I know they are getting rid of that bit and no one else will likely have to stay in it for too much longer I give this place five stars. It's a lot of fun and extremely accommodating.

While the bar is stocked with a standard south coast array of ales and wines, the kitchen is set up both of a la carte and carvery on Sundays. The carvery was quite possibly the best I've had in 10 years. The portion was generous and varied with fresh prepared veg, roast potatoes, gammon, chicken, beef and yorkshire puddings. The chef was on hand to carve and gladly told me the story of the reopening. One of the only minor (and it truly is minor) complaints I could have is that the gravy was over salty, but next time I'll bear this in mind and only pepper my veg. The other minor complaint would be that while ale is nice and all, a craft lager would really round out the taps at the bar. Overall excellent.

We were getting guided over the phone by a new waitress, which was stressful to be honest, as she didn't really have any idea. However, as soon as we got there, we were greeted by the owner, who apologised and showed us to our room. The room had literally just been refurbished, it was a nice room, although the bedding was decent, the pillows and duvet were cheap. They had left the Ikea stickers on the £1.99 lamps and toilet roll holders and so on. The shower room and toilet were really small and compact, although clean, the shower glass had loads of water marks on it. There was a bath in the bedroom, all a bit strange, as the room itself wasn't really the vibe of a room that would have a freestanding bath in the main bedroom area. The bar was the best part. The owners son was super friendly and chatted away, offering us the local vodka and gin and that was super nice. They had loads of brews and options for drinks and the service was excellent. The open fires and quirky decor with flowers, and fairy lights was very cute. Really loved that about it. It was very central and once the car was parked up, there was no need to use it again until we left. Breakfast was very good indeed and had excellent ingredients. I would stay here again, but only if the room rates were at a good price. Can't fault the bar or the food.

I checked in and was given a complimentary pen, which was nice but I already have several. The same wonderful bellhop, Matthew, helped move my car. There was another man there. He was condescending and seemed to want to try to check in before I did. Although I sensed competition in him, so I ended up racing him to our separate rooms (I was in room 426 and he was in room 425). The room itself was cozy, and with a minor adjustment I was able to see the ocean. The bed was very very soft. I made sure of that. I also added my own personal touch to the room. The TV remote had a good signal (I made sure of that too) and when I picked up the phone I was greeted with a happy hello. I had trouble finding the bathroom to take a bath, but I quickly found the solution. There was a slight wait in the buffet hall, but that also moved quickly, with a little help from myself. The man in room 425 was also there, and challenged me to an eating competition (which I should tell you I won). There was oysters, and I ate several, but I feel they may have been a bit off. There was loud music at 12:05 am, but I very politely asked them to be quiet. In the end, five star stay! Will be back!

The pub has two main rooms; the rear bar area is more rustic and is more traditionally furnished, and a long front room, which is more comfy and has sofas. We ordered paninis with chips, and tea (I don't drink and drive). The food was decent enough (typical pub fare), the service very friendly, and the beer garden at the rear was just lovely. The only downer was one of my pet hates - serving food on a slate with a mini fryer cage for the chips. What's wrong with crockery? I gather the makeover is fairly recent after a long period of mixed reviews. I'd eat here again on this experience, but not make a special detour. They have a more expensive evening menu and accommodation, neither of which we can vouch for.

Parking is free; there's a nearby minimum wage Tesco - 'every penny counts' or something like that - and a Pizza Hut. The staff gave a warm welcome and when I realised I needed a document printed they very kindly and gracefully took trouble to print for me at short notice, despite being noticeably busy. The room was a good space, cosy very warm, darn comfy bed with a telly, tea and coffee facilities. I think ours was a premium room. For reasons unknown to me there is the ability to change the in-room bedroom lighting, greens thru blues and maybe more. I think it's called 'mood lighting' but it's a bit naff. These places always are a nuisance when trying to get through heavy internal doors with suitcases - here a room card was needed too just to make life more difficult - maybe there's the reason for mood lighting after all to dilute the exasperation to get from reception to a room. I do wish the designers of these places would come up with novel ideas to sort this out. The one thing we always avoid in these places is the food as it tends to be low grade (and relatively low and fairly priced) and prepared off site to a high degree but it's not an issue as a car is needed for most of these places so getting food that is appealing isn't too much of chore. The staff make it. We'd go back anytime.

It didn't matter if you were regular or new they made you feel welcome. The food was excellent and a very pleasant surprise. I had the Steak and Ale pie and, when it arrived, I was diss appointed at its size. Then I cut into it and realised why!! It was PACKED solid with steak!!! Not a single gap anywhere!! Was a very filling and pleasing meal which was happily put on a tab instantly despite us being strangers. Cannot recommend this place enough.

This will be a short review. We were in Southampton for one night before leaving on a cruise the…read morenext day. What we needed was a hotel that was convenient to the harbor, had restaurants and shopping within and easy walking distance, had comfortable beds and quiet rooms, offered a nice breakfast options, felt safe and was a reasonable price for this short and highly functional stopover. This hotel met every one of those needs. Exactly what you want before setting off on a voyage. Would I stay there for any other reason - no. Would I stay there again if leaving on another cruise out of Southampton - most definitely.
