I've…read moregot to be honest and admit that I've always watched the hustle and bustle of the markets in Birmingham from a safe distance. However, having a young family and in these financially challenged times, I thought I should bite the bullet and give it a go as an actual customer, rather than mere browser. Being the coward that I am, I went with my Mum for moral support. She knows what to look for when buying meat and veg. In these days of cellophane packaged supermarket goods, the market produce can seem very daunting. After some hints from Mum and watching her in action, I went for it at A P Doherty's. I wanted to write this review to recommend them because of the amazing deal we got. I think Ryan (the guy behind the counter) mistook my hesitancy for reluctance to spend, whereas I was trying to work out what he was talking about and whether I was getting good value. There are loads of butchers and poultry specialists but these guys gave great value. I got so much chicken and gammon for £20 that the bag burst carrying it to the car.

A refrigerator van on the corner of the outdoor market might be initially off-putting, but bear with me while I relate the tale of dear of Mickey M... So, I have lived in the Jewellery Quarter for around... Ohhh... 7/8 years now. When I first moved in my budget was majorly overstretched (working a shop job on minimum wage) so shopping on Birmingham Markets was really my only viable choice to actually get some fruit, veg and meat on the plate 7 days a week. We (me and the other half) very quickly came across Mick's van on the corner of the market (opposite the Bullring Tavern). For a bargainous £10 note, Mick furnished us with chicken breasts, steak, pork chops, lamb chops, a pack of bacon and sausages. All of the meat was great quality and ever since that first encounter we have been firm fans. We now tend to go for a £20 bundle and get much the same (except with the occasional bit of stewing steak, chicken portions and whole chickens in the mix). Just £20 tends to sort us out for meat for around 6 weeks (keeping in mind we have at least two vegetarian meals in a week). A trip to see Mick is always like visiting an old friend. If you haven't been back for a while he will enquire as to what you've been up to (in a friendly way, not a pushy one), ask how life's going and let you know about any new or exciting stock he's managed to lay his hands on. We've had everything from Turkey crowns the size of your head to duck breasts from him in the past and it's always been great quality at a great price. If you're looking for something to BBQ, he offers set packages at a set price but state your budget and let him know what you're looking for he will set you up with the best deal you can get. Don't get me wrong, you can certainly get a wider selection in the Indoor markets; but if you're looking to buy meat for a family you won't find better value than Mick The Meat and his big white van.

If you fancy something more interesting than "white fish fillets" for your dinner, you are in for a treat. The Birmingham Indoor Markets is great for meat, fish and poultry, but I have used these guys many a time and not been disappointed. From your basic stuff like Mackerel to your more expensive seafoods - chances are you'll be able to find what you're looking for here. The guys clearly label their produce (so you know the cost before you buy) and you can get set amounts, rather than pre-packaged - so you can buy exactly what you need. They're friendly, helpful, have great produce and will offer advice on their stock. If you go towards the end of the day, you might be able to snap up a bargain too. If you're looking for great quality fish and you're watching your pennies, give these guys a go!

From meat to chicken to pork sausages, these are some of the things you will find here. I have brought some sausages and cooked them at home. They tasted brilliant and I ended up having some hot dogs. I have also brought some chicken legs and thighs from here and used them to make a Thai Green Chicken curry. Again the chicken itself was excellent and I have no doubts I will be back. I do have to travel some way to get to Handsworth from West Bromwich but it is worth the travelling because I know I am guaranteed quality food from here. Staff are excellent which makes this place even better.

Once I was helped, I got the eggs on whole wheat toast. It was okay, just to get something in my belly, but it had no flavor, no sauce. I believe it was £3.95 from what I read or maybe I was so hungry, but she charged me £2.95. I ain't complainin'. Lol. :) She was very nice, but it was not the best experience. It was more of a grab and go to get something to fill me up, but did not have much flavor. Although they are more known for their sweets, they should still have high quality, tasty food for their other food items. It is also a chain, so sometimes with chains, the quality of the food and service goes down. Out of the other options, they are more like fast-food service and do not have healthy options. It was okay, not as great as I thought it would be. That's okay. If you are looking for great places to eat at the mall, check out the sit-down restaurants like Bill's, which has exceptional service and food. There is also Café Rouge and other restaurants that should be good. :)

Me and Dan G. have visited the market faithfully most weeks for around 6 years. No trip is complete without popping our head into Chilly Billy's and seeing what they have. In terms of cold foods, expect frozen veg, pies, pizzas and all manner of convenience food for an extremely reasonable price (we recently managed to bag Chicago town stuffed crust takeaway pizza's for 50p each). The real gems, however, are the one off items. We have found Tabasco hot sauce at 50p a bottle, Biore face cleaning products (normally around £5 - £10) for 50p and regularly buy our wraps here for 25p each. There can anything from "Straight to wok" noodles to posh chocolate on here week to week, but if you see it - pick it up! There's no guarantee it'll be there the next week (or even half an hour after you've seen it). They also have fresh items which change week to week. Last saturday we managed to bag a dozen free range eggs for £1! Result! They normally have a good selection of cold meats, cheeses and some interesting stuff (haggis and white pudding anyone?) available. Its's worth knowing that the main store is on the corner of the market, but they have a secondary space on the Bullring side too. There can be some different items on the stalls, so it is worth checking out both if you have the time. The staff are friendly and helpful, but could be seen as a little brusque at times. As a regular, I always get a hello and a bit of banter; but it is a market stall, so not high glamour. I would recommend you have a nose if you are around the market, you never know what you might find!

Its dozen or so deep freezer chests mean that the focus is mainly on frozen foods, but it's also cheerfully eclectic, with some rather curious bargains popping up from time to time. For instance, a few years ago we found a kilo of freeze dried coffee beans for five pounds. We never found them there again, but I did enjoy a particularly rocket fuelled month because of this particular bargain. Another odd bargain we found during this period was frozen pre chopped garlic, a product I was less found of. Though Chilly Billys is a little more upmarket than the frozen foods stall in the Indoor Market, the prices still remain vastly cheaper than the prices in mainstream food outlets. You could probably fill your freezer for less than twenty pounds, unless you have an unusually big freezer that is, and every time I pass you see families buying what is obviously the bulk of the weekly shop there. There's loads of good stuff to be found here, be it frozen meat or fish, frozen ready meals or whatever crazy things they've managed to acquire recently. Definitely worth a look.

NEVER EVER GOING THERE AGAIN. AVOID THESE FAKESTERS. MEDINA SUPERSTORE, MAS BAZAR and even BANGLa STATION with its high prices is better than Paks supermarket lozells road, atleast in Bangl station you gonna get fresh produce at the weight it's supposed to be at even if they charge extra but at PaKsSupermarket Lozells not only they charge you but the hive you produce which is gone bad and even from there they will steal a few pieces out. Malhi meat centre is popular amongst the Sikh community across Birmingham (even as far as…read moreSolihull!) because they pride themselves in selling non-halal meat. This is now becoming a rarity so it's no surprise people who do not eat halal meat, are travelling from far and wide. It's a small shop that is virtually always busy. And they're open till late, which is testament to their popularity. They sell chicken, beef, lamb, pork and fish, although their selection on fish is limited. They are pretty cheap, but beware if you're buying meat on the bone that you're not literally taking a bag of bones home! As you would expect at any butchers, it's smelly and not the cleanest of places. But all staff attempt hygienic standards by wearing overalls and gloves. However, I think it's unhygienic (and possibly against health regulations) that they stock up through the front of the shop. I've been there whilst a delivery man walked inches past me with a whole pig on his shoulder! Now that was an experience.
