Quite a…read morecompact restaurant, seating for only about twenty, with a small well stocked bar in the far corner. The staff are enthusiastic and friendly, and the music and décor are traditional Italian, which makes for great atmosphere. Menu wise, a good range of traditional Italian dishes. The starters were pleasingly varied; I plumped for the Bruschetta Misto, bruschetta covered in a variety of olives, aubergines, peppers, courgettes, wonderfully tasty! My wife had the equally flavoursome garlic mushroom; overall a cracking start to the meal. Mains included a good range of pasta, steak and fish dishes, as well as daily specials. We both went for a tagliatelle based dish, my wife's was a range of vegetables in a spicy tomato sauce and mine was a range of different mushrooms topped with pancetta in a creamy goat's cheese sauce. Both dishes were sublime, some of the best food we've eaten in a long time! The accompanying balsamic dressed fresh salad complimented both dishes well too. Clearly you have to have a dessert, disappointingly their trademark Tiramisu wasn't available on the evening we visited, still gives us an excuse to visit again! The Chocolate Sin and meringue encrusted with almonds were able substitutes though. A fitting end to a wonderful meal, as was the strong accompanying coffee. Montanaro's lives up to its star billing and we will return very soon!

Even though I live relatively near to Melbourne, I've never actually ventured into the centre to eat before, which is surprising as there are numerous restaurants with great reputations located there. I'd been recommended Amalfi White by a colleague at work, and the restaurant certainly has kerb appeal, an impressively inviting façade. We had come to dine in the brasserie, but there is also a fine dining restaurant upstairs, with limited opening hours. Inside is just as impressive as the outer, high ceilings, a big sweeping bar, with every possible drink you could imagine, and enough space to seat around 35-40. To the rear is a pizza oven, and the bathroom is down a couple of flights of stairs. Two menus to choose from, an extensive evening menu and another limited menu for a set price, for either two or three courses; 3 choices for each course. We plumped for the latter, and whilst we made our choices, we sat on comfortable sofas adjacent to the bar. The tables were large and well spaced, with leather seating on one side and comfortable chairs on the other. Between the three of us, we chose one of the starters each: smoked salmon salad, duck arancini and large garlic pizza bread with sea salt. A great selection, the salad was fresh and light, the garlic bread crisp and savoury, and the moreish arancini, with a sweet onion dip, was devoured with relish! Mains wise, off the normal menu, there were a variety of pizzas, burgers, steaks and various pasta dishes, but off the set menu, I chose the Spaghetti Carbonara, very rich and filled with salty pancetta, whilst my wife and mother-in-law had the seared chicken breast, with crisp fries and a salad, which was a generous portion to say the least! Just enough room for a dessert, the gooseberry and elderflower fool was light and tasty, perfect for an early summer's evening. On the whole a great meal, the staff were friendly and efficient, and the homemade 'mocktails' large and refreshing; we will return to try the fine dining restaurant upstairs soon.

Adjacent to it is a branch of Nando's that will be opening very soon too. Inside the restaurant is full of colour, and the fittings remind you of summer days. On the night we visited the restaurant was packed, with a range of families, couples and young people; the seating was varied from large tables for family groups, and booth type seating around the sides. We had booked a table that morning, and I'm glad we had, I don't think we would have got a table otherwise. Shown to our booth type table, and quickly served drinks, it was a promising start. One downside though was the music, pleasant enough, with songs from the likes of Andy Williams, but it was just too loud, so much so that my wife and I even though we were no more than four feet away from each other, across a table, had to virtually shout so we could have a conversation! Enough of the negative and on to the food, a good variety on the menu, from pizza to pasta, as well as fish and chicken dishes. My wife opted for a bowl of penne pasta with chicken and bacon, with lemon seasoning, a large serving, but fairly bland. I opted for filled pasta, with four cheeses, with a basil dressing, that's not what arrived, which was chicken and pasta in creamy sauce, very tasty, but not quite what I had in mind. The accompanying fried courgettes were lovely though, but on the whole a meal of hits and misses. The service was great, and the restaurant certainly had an atmosphere; would I return? Maybe after six months.
