While I hope you do not have to deal with such a sad event in the near future, I can assure you that if it happens, Westford should be your first call. Here are just a few reasons why I recommend them so much: * They are kind, professional, and appreciate what you are going through. They see us at our most vulnerable. They get that. Yes, they are a business, one that has been in Bellingham for many generations. They are an important part of this community because of how they conduct their business, how cool is that? * Hard-sell tactics? Nope! We have all heard of that kind of nonsense from other funeral homes throughout the Pacific Northwest. You won't find it here. * Let's be honest, family can be...a lot...right? Stress, loss...they can make family dynamics difficult. Westford handled our issues, again, with respect, kindness, professionalism, and especially decorum. That's impressive. Oh, did I mention that my father-in-law passed away over 20 years ago? When he realized he was terminal, he decided to plan ahead, one of the many things I loved about him. Not only did he pay for his burial, but he also purchased his wife's (my mother-in-law's) burial in advance. For those of us who have noticed the cost difference between, say, 2000 and now, you know prices have gone up. Westford absolutely honored their agreement completely! They showed us the original invoice before we even thought to ask. Here is another perfect example of why I am writing this: her name is April. She walked all of us through everything. No pressure to "upsell". No treating us like we weren't important because we had already paid for everything decades ago. We were absolutely her priority. Wow. That is what you will experience at Westford's. She is such a blessing. And... I called Westford's today to ask to speak with Rob Westford, the owner. Honestly, I didn't even say it was a positive call, yet I was given his contact information without hesitation. I did contact him to ask him to call me at his convenience. He did! After speaking with him, it only reinforced why Westford Funeral Home continues to be the quiet leader in this area. As a dear friend of mine often says, "Management puts their own footprint on a business". Rob Westford is the epitome of that statement. He truly appreciates his responsibilities as a funeral director, the place his business has in Whatcom County, and the work of his incredible employees. That, in itself, is also a blessing. Just the amount of things to try and take in is staggering. All sorts of sizes of wood, but also trappings that have come out former schools and hospitals and you normally might not find. Just one note to be extra careful roaming the property. There are a lot of edges sticking out and watch for sharp objects (i.e. nails) on the ground. I probably would not bring a child in tow. In addition to building materials, there were quite a few quirky items for sale and you never know what's going to be around any corner. Maybe something you need, or, you might find an unexpected treasure. When we visited the hours were rather limited: Saturday 9am - 2pm, so you might want to check the website before heading over.

I was up in the Ham recently helping a friend find a used door for a project, and we decided to…read morecheck out the Reuse Center. Located in a couple of buildings where Britton Rd. meets the Mt. Baker Highway, this large "store" is more like a junkyard full of salvaged building parts and treasures of all kinds. If you're into upcycling, re-cycling, and salvaging this is definitely the place to come! Their selection is unmatched, easily beating out other local salvage stores both in selection of building materials and price. And the owner is super nice and helpful. He truly has a passion for the business and the movement, and it shows! And wandering this property is like visiting a museum - with parts and pieces of recognizable area schools and other demolished buildings, that the Reuse Center clearly, painstakingly took apart, categorized, and stores on its property. Where I struggled, though, was with the unsafe feeling of the property - most notably the dusty, musty large garage/warehouse where much of the wood products are stored. There is a LOT of stuff in here. The aisles are very narrow and all sorts of building materials are stacked high. I know this type of store is never going to be "pretty" like a Home Depot or anything, and I totally get that. But it just didn't feel safe in there, with only one entrance/exit, confusing pathways, and LOTS of combustible materials. I felt relieved when we found what we were looking for and were safely back outside. There's also a cram-packed separate garage area with thrift store type finds, though it was very haphazardly arranged and the items were slightly interesting, again with super narrow aisles that were hard to navigate. The outdoor salvage yard area is full of all things interesting, lots of metal, and would be a fun place to find things if you were super creative with used materials. A lot of it was pretty junky, though, and looked unusable. I can see this spot being a place I would go again if I couldn't find my used/salvaged materials at another location. We did end up finding a door, and at a very good price, so I can't fault them for that. Maybe if they were able to get rid of some of their inventory, it would be a more fun place to shop at.

When the company we used for arrangements and marker ordering ended up making a big mistake with our dads marker, Jonathon stepped up and helped us navigate a solution and he even threw in an in ground flower vase with a face plate that matched our marker. Once the corrected marker was returned to Green Acres they expedited having it set and placed on out dad's grave on his Birthday as they new people would be visiting. If I needed to get anything, they would contact me in a timely manner. The menu was always great. I felt like I should bring the monthly list home and use it as a guide for meals. The hallways and rooms were clean and neat. While my Mother didn't join in on the activities, They had plenty of art, coffee, groups that she could have.
