The surgeon was competent and considerate and she communicated well and answered my questions. Never again will I ever go to the Ephrata Hospital ER....I went to the Ephrata Hospital ER on Wednesday evening March 6th, 2019, after falling hard onto my back and the back of my head. The first problem that I had was, I was told to get undressed and put on the hospital gown, I asked if I could leave my underwear on and was told that yes I could. Later on that evening when a different nurse saw I was still wearing underwear, and after she caused me great pain trying to draw blood from my arm, she proceeded to cut off my underpants and a brand new $30.00 bra. I told her I could slip the bra off and she totally ignored me. My other complaint is that the same nurse as above, hurt me and caused pain, and bad bruising to both of my arms, trying to draw blood, and then putting in an IV later. My arms are still sore three days later. I have NEVER in my life ever had anyone have a hard time putting a needle into my arm, and I'm always told that I have great veins for drawing blood. Not only was she apparently unschooled on how to draw blood or put in an IV. She was also very rude, and kept mumbling. Plus she unnecessarily cut off my brand new underwear that I had been told I could keep on! The entire time that I had to deal with her I felt like I was bothering her. My son was getting very angry and was about to go to the desk and demand another nurse because he didn't like the way that she was treating me. I have no idea what her name was, but she was overweight and looked unkept. In the end, I was transferred to the trauma unit at Lancaster General, since Ephrata doesn't even have a trauma unit! That was the best thing that could have happened to me. I had wonderful doctors and knowledgeable nurses, as well as exceptional care for the three days I was at Lancaster General Hospital. read more

Stay as far away from this health system as possible. They are more concerned about catering to their nursing staff and obtaining superficial titles then caring for their patients. After many incidents with my husband, we finally moved to LGH/Penn Medicine where the cardiac issues were finally resolved. So much for the top 100 hospital!!!! Now, my mother needs a gall blatter scan after a recent trip to UPMC emergency room and well over six months seeing a Wellspan physician for severe stomach issues. Her insurance is dening the test because Wellspan nursing staff are to pampered and too lazy to do their jobs. This has been a rapidly growing trend since Roxanne Gatspar, a RN by trade, assumed the CEO role at Wellspan. Dear Roxanna, should my mother require emergency surgery or die as a result of your nursing staff not doing their job of providing information and advocating for the patient, you will be hearing from our attorney. I am sure the attorney in Philadelphia that is representing the family whose father died in your emergency room with no response for hours, would gladly take our case!!!!! read more

Horrible! I had a hysterectomy at this hospital. The rooms are not private and my roommate kept moaning in pain all night. I got absolutely no sleep and the nurses were completely unsympathetic. Then, at 3 in the morning, a nurse brought me some pills and said, "Here's your pain medication." Somehow in my fog of sleeplessness and pain, I was lucid enough to ask what the medication was. She said, "Vicodin." I said, "I'm ALLERGIC to Vicodin..it's written all over my chart!" Sure enough, all over my chart and in huge stickers on the front of my chart, my allergy to Vicodin was very clearly marked, but somehow the incompetent nurse was still going to give it to me. If my allergy to Vicodin was a life threatening one and if I hadn't asked what the pills were before taking them, they could have killed me. I will never darken the door of this hospital again. read more

It's very rare that I write a rating, but this was too good not to share. In January 2020, my husband and I had a phenomenal experience with the Labor & Delivery, Maternity Unit, and NICU at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital!!! As a nurse, pilot, and with my first delivery, I was just so blown away by how amazing the staff treated us, how beautiful and clean the facility was, and all of the effort by the staff to make us feel comfortable. I was transferred to the Ephrata for stalled labor after being awake approximately 30 hours. The staff gave me medication to assist me to get some sleep, while progressing my labor. During this time, they brought a reclining chair and cot into the delivery room for my husband and best friend, provided regular updates to my parents along with taking them to a monitor to explain what was going on, and delivered pillows and blankets to the waiting room. My husband and best friend were guided by the staff in how to best support me and be involved in the delivery. The midwives, nurses, and other staff worked to preserve my goal for a regular delivery with minimal site trauma. When we transferred to my maternity room in the middle of the night, the staff already had a reclining chair and cot set up for my husband and best friend. Thankfully I asked our nurse to take the baby since we were exhausted and not safe to care for a newborn. A few hours later our baby had a seizure. The nurse recognized it right away and immediately took him around the corner to the NICU. During my maternity admission and the baby's week long admission in the NICU, we continued to be amazed by the wonderful experience with the pediatricians, nurses, lactation consultants, and staff. The nurse to patient ratio and dedication of the staff facilitated individualized personal care. They all took the time to personally interact with us and provided a wealth of knowledge to set us up for success. In my experience as a nurse, we are stretched severely thin with balancing multiple priorities and often there just isn't enough time to get to know our patients. What we experienced at Ephrata Hospital was truly amazing and life changing. The staff were such a blessing and we are forever appreciative. We will definitely be back for the delivery of our second child! Thank you, Thank you!!! read more

I have had to be hospitalized 3 times in the past 2 years, and every time I have been admitted to ECH, I was amazed at not only the competency on the part of doctors and nurses who treated me (both in the ER and on the floor), but the friendliness that was exhibited by staff to both patients, visitors and to each other. I have lived in Lancaster County for over 30 years and I remember when Ephrata Hospital did NOT have a good reputation, so I was pleasantly surprised with all three of my experiences there. I'm about to go in one more time and the treatment that I received my previous times takes much of the dread out of going. I like to give credit where credit is due - I definitely feel that in the past few years at least, ECH has stepped up their game and is a local hospital that keeps improving. That's good news for all of us. read more

This is the worst hospital I ever been to....me and my wife had baby there.... never again.... have federal government blue shield.... brought some private doctor in ....so he can get money...because he didn't deal with any ins.... wonder why....they never informed us.....sent bills for $5000 dollars demand payment took to collection before month was over . Go elsewhere.... you only looking for problems later on...... this hospital is so backwards and 1970's...they get you and have lawyers so you can't fight it...your screwed... and we make over $100000.00 a year... amazing.... read more

Have had 2 excellent experiences at this hospital. My son had knee surgery. And my father had a knee replacement. The acute rehab unit is fabulous. Both experiences were positive e. Nurses and caregivers were professional! read more

TERRIBLE. Came here with a dislocated shoulder on a Thurs night and sat in the ER for FORTY FIVE MINUTES and a family member had to say something to even get me back in that amount of time. Almost passed out from pain and when informing the nurse, she said, "well that's because you're in pain". HELLO, I know that! Didn't offer to have me lay down or get water or ask what she could do to help. After I was taken back I waited another 30 minutes to even see a doctor. Doctor put my shoulder back in quickly once he finally came in (and again my family member had to continue to say something to the staff to have him stop in). I realize hospitals are busy places and with a sister as a nurse I know they have to do things in a certain order but when you have someone in pain, passing out, don't they take higher priority than people coming in for less critical issues? Oh, and they didn't bill my health insurance correctly so there's that fiasco I'm still dealing with. HORRENDOUS patient care and customer service all around. Don't go here if you can help it! read more

I have been to this Hospital twice now. Once for my heart and now for cardiovascular operation. both time I have received the best of care. I would recommend this hospital to any one who asked. I went to Lancaster General and I thought the staff at Ephrata was a lot better and caring. read more
