I received an excellent offer from these tossers. For only $250, plus 25% of the first year's tax saving, or the great cost saving of only $150 plus 35% of my first year's savings, they will helpfully file an appeal of my property tax assessment. What a bloody bargain. Here's the thing, anyone can file an appeal using the Gwinnett County Property tax web site. And it costs you $0. Now, let's see what the delta is here. $0 vs. $250 plus and unknown amount, or $0 vs. $150 plus another unknown amount. I think I'll opt for the $0 option, Alex. I smell the scent of an American lawyer skunk in all of this. Can we say snake oil salesmen, conmen, ripoff artists? I knew you could. And, if the geniuses at Equihijax PT Consultants want to try to reach out and touch me with their legal tentacles, let me advise you that I have a personal attorney, who likes to make money defending me in court, along with two NY qualified lawyers, my niece and nephew, who do international lawyering, available with just a few phone calls. I'm guessing, any sane judge would toss out any attempt by EPTC to get relief from a court case. My defence will cost me little - how about your costs. I wish I could 0 stars. This company is absolutely terrible. They do not fight for you at all. I had multiple like properties literally next door to each other and while they got 80% lowered, probably because I did all the homework for them Cap rate spreadsheets etc. there were two that weren't lowered, which were exactly like the others and literally next door to the other. They basically caved in and couldn't get it lowered, this should have been a slam dunk. read more

Have used Equitax since its inception - at least 10 years ago - have always every time been pleased with their service , their methodology , communications ...... of course we haven't won EVERY appeal but won most of them ! Who REALLY needs a bad review is Fulton County's Board of "Equalization" for their poor choices of comps and poorly administered Hearings ... Equitax does an excellent job at reasonable cost. Trying to negotiate with the county on your own places you as "a stranger in a strange land". County assessors know all the methods to defend their assessment against us as amateurs. Employing a lawyer can be very expensive. If you have a good case for an assessment reduction I found Equitax very effective in getting results. While they have access to much data, the more information you can give them on your knowledge of comparable sales values in your neighborhood and the condition of your property (including pictures) the better job they can do. All my communications with Equitax, including the CEO, assessors and office manager were very professional. When you compute your tax savings over the three year "freeze" they negotiate the Equitax fee is very reasonable. read more

I recieved a letter today from Equitax whom I paid to represent me at my tax appeal. They informed me two weeks after the fact; in writing not by phone call that they missed my appeal and the appeal went on with out any represtentation. I am screwed. These people are from what I can see major scam artists. Perhaps they no longer have any pull with the City of Atlanta I do not know but if they are handling your 2009 tax appeal you better dog them... Not recommeded. This could not have been easier. I signed up with Equitax in October. Didn't cost me anything at that time. Over the ensuing months Equitax appealed to the county the "way-too-high" appraisal on my house. The county lowered the appraisal by $25,000. I saved nearly $300. In late March, Equitax sent me a bill for 1/3 of the savings amount and that was that. I would have never gone through the rigamarole of appealing in person to the tax review board --who's got the time or know-how? Anyway, unless you want to do the job yourself or simply accept the county's appraised value for you home, these guys are a great answer. You only pay if they save you money. thanks read more

Equitax charges a lot of money to mount a token appeal for your property taxes. My property taxes went up $250,000 in a single year - about 50%, a year after I bought my house, providing absolute proof market value. You would think that would be a rather easy case to make. Not for these guys. The county gave me a token reduction in the $250,000 increase. When I questioned the amount they wished to charge me for the appeal, they told me that my type of appeal would prevent the county from raising my taxes for 3 years. Then I get a letter from them saying that the county is going to ignore the freeze, and increase my taxes. They want to "represent" me again, as if I'm not getting fleeced enough! Hire an appraiser, and represent yourself. Those mass "appeal" companies are just there to make tax increases a money making proposition for themselves, with very little benefit to you. I ended up paying them nearly the same amount as I "saved" in taxes. read more

I had a good experience working with Ernie Cole, who is listed on EquitaxUSA.com as representing Dekalb County. He appealed the value for my townhouse and got the assessment lowered by 28%. This reduced my 2010 tax bill by just over $1,000. I was a little nervous about the up-front fee because Clark Howard says to avoid them, but it seemed worth it. Equitax earned a $250 fee + $260 for 25% of my first year's savings. After my successful appeal, the county cannot change my assessment for 2 more years, until 2013. I could have researched home values and taken time off work to appear before the Board of Equalization, but this process worked for me. Over the course of six months, I emailed the details whenever I received notices from the county, and I had a few phone conversations with Mr. Cole. For very little time investment, I saved a lot of money, so I'm a happy camper. P.S. The county had valued my townhouse at an absurdly high value. My point is that these guys are not miracle workers, but if you know your place is overvalued, they can save you time. read more

I would not go back to Equitax again. David the "CEO" boasted an average reduction rate of 20%. After our taxes were reduced by a wopping 2%, we discovered that his satistics are actually closer to an 8% average. It was not worth the money. There are many competitors in the atlanta area that produce the same results for a much fairer price. Although his website states that many consider him to be the "foremost expert on property taxation", I have never met anyone who described David Humphreys in that manner. I would describe him as the foremost expert at blowing smoke up peoples asses. read more

Worst company ever... Tried billing us for three years after service was completed. May have been double billed... Their accounting practices are so awful I would never refer my worst enemy to them. Equitax was very unprofessional to deal with. I recieved a collection notice charging a administrative fee plus collection agency just within less than 30 days of final county tax notice stating there was ZERO reduction of my property tax. Essentially a business scam to bill a customer without delivering any service or result. Whenever I call the business, it's always the answering service and never spoken to a tax professional. I will contest their charges. It is unethical and should be illegal! read more

Horrible, horrible service. Had to call daily for over a week to try to speak with the person filing my appeal. Keith Houston was his name, he was very rude to me over the phone and knew nothing about my house, the night before my scheduled appeal. They spend no significant time actually representing your case, their business model is to hook suckers like me in with their mailer, and get enough quantity that they don't need to deliver quality. For the money you pay these crooks, you would be far better served paying a real estate agent to do a detailed comparative market analysis and fill out the appeal paperwork for you. If you can't show up at the appeal to represent your home home, pay someone to go for you, but not these guys, they do not put the adequate research or honest effort in representing your case. read more

I always give the benefit of doubt to a business. I believe, since I have used this company, they are unethical. I was provided a great pitch on the phone, called 4 times over the course of the appraisal process (and could only talk to the phone rep), provided neighborhood comps, pics of home, validated errors in the tax appraisal on square footage, number of bedrooms and bathrooms. All the needed resources for a good appeal. Plus, I was informed a rep would come out to my home, and I saw or heard from no one. Equitax took my $250 and I never heard from them again after the appeals. I only received a letter from the county that the appeal had denied. My next door neighbor appealed on his own, without as much evidence that I provided, and was successful. Please continue to read the customer reviews, check with the BBB office and other resources, and make up your own mind. You may be able to save yourself a lot of your money and time. After careful consideration and more due diligence on my part, I sought out a local appraisal team. In a nutshell, I did not research this company and it is my fault that I wasted the money and the time. I'm only rating a 1 star only because I cannot rate on a negative scale. Terrible! Horrible! I had to constantly contact my representative, Philip Johns, and push for information and updates on the status of my appeal. I paid the $199 administrative fee for each parcel being appealed. They did nothing and invoiced me for two "success" fees. In good faith I paid the invoice, but because they are so unprofessional and forgot to cancel the BOE hearing I had to call the tax assessors office and cancel. According to the county tax assessor EquiTax a/k/a Stillwood Group did NOTHING to get a reduction in our property tax. The reduction I received was county wide. I have written to demand my money ($816.70) back. If this money is not returned I will pursue legally. DO NOT USE THIS FIRM! You will regret it! read more
