I worked with Liza Hurlburt, who is as patient, kind, informative and helpful as any real estate agent could possibly be. She bent over backward to help us find the perfect house, inform us about the market, and never pressured us in any way. I really felt like she was on our side the whole time... actually more like we were house-hunting with a helpful friend who knew the industry up and down, rather than with an "agent." We ended up continuing to rent instead of buying a new home, sadly (for now, at least) due to circumstances beyond our control, but we are very grateful for all of Liza's help and the time she put into helping us make our dream come true. Then, when I asked him a question about the property I was interested in, he avoided answering the question. Then, when I explained that I really wanted to know the answer to my question, he just said "good bye." His loss, I'm a serious buyer! But that's okay, I'd rather work with an agent who is honest and interested in answering my questions and helping me get a home that's good for me.

I emailed him to request a viewing of property on 30 Dusty Rd, Warwick, MA 01364 he has listed. He replies, "Well if you are sure you will be there...I will have the caretaker there... A caretaker who can open the place for you." I asked, "Why is the caretaker showing the house and not the realtor and why?" He replies, "Because most of the time Buyers are late and when you multiply it by 10 appointments per day it becomes 7 PM! Buyers tend to think they are the only one looking that day!" (Please note the exclamation marks). I also emailed him with my availability to view the property four days earlier, but he did not respond. I emailed him again the night before our planned meeting to confirm the time, and he showed no flexibility as the caretaker was only available at 10:30 AM. I explained that I had small children and lived 1.5 hours away. I also asked why he cannot show me the property since his the realtor. He insisted on having the caretaker showing the property at his convenience. When I told him that I am considering contacting the seller and his boss if he has one, as well as seeking the services of another realtor, his response was, "OK, have it your way... Sorry, it didn't work out..." If you are a buyer and you are considering working with John Colby, you draw your own conclusion. But I caution you that if your email has a brown face as mine does, be prepared to be treated as someone who does not have the means to buy a house, thus not worthy of his time. It will not matter if you hold advanced degrees, are successful, and live in the affluent town of Dover, MA as I do. Your brown face will dictate whether or not he, and not a caretaker, will show you a property. You have been warned!
