He kept a copy of the sketch on his clipboard to reference and checked in with us at each step of the process to be sure his work was in line with our goals. His team showed up timely each work day and were friendly and polite. We had some timing challenges with another contractor on-site, but Ross and his crew remained flexible and gracefully worked with us to accommodate this situation. After the project was completed, we reached out with a question about a sprinkler head and Ross stopped by the next day to troubleshoot and ensure it was working properly. I decided to go with Chris because he could squeeze me in sooner. BIG MISTAKE! His definition of an assessment is to turn on each station for a few minutes and walk around casually to check for leaks. I wanted someone to come out and look over every single drip line and sprinkler and tell me what needs to be fixed or improved upon. He finished his "assessment" in 45 minutes, which included fixing 2 things. After he left, I discovered there was something else broken which he didn't notice. Chris said he would email me in 2-3 days a write-up of his findings. After not receiving anything for a week, I texted him to follow up. No response. Save your time and money and go with someone else. Update: Chris did send the proposal after I sent him the text. Apparently it went to my spam folder. Unbelievable quote. I already had someone else come and do the maintenance for less than a quarter of the cost he quoted me.

From the first meeting, I could tell Steve was an unconventional kind of contractor and was willing to work WITH me to get the exact results I wanted. We spend at least an hour in person reviewing the project, then several rounds of phone call/emails back and forth to hammer out the details and price. Compared to my other bids for the exact same work, Steve's bid was exceptionally detailed (I kid you not, down to the nuts and bolts required) and was SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper--so much so that I hired him on the spot when I got his final reworked bid. I am a pretty particular person (some might say a micro-manager), and I had a very specific vision for how I wanted the fence to be built and look. Steve (and his employees Chris & Patrick) were completely receptive to my input and turned the whole project into a collaborative effort in figuring out how to solve some of the more unique issues that arose during the construction. For me and my personality, that worked out perfectly. I am sure other contractors would have totally blown their lid dealing with me onsite everyday asking questions and talking, but Steve's guys took it in stride and the added collaboration really worked out for the benefit of the final result. The final fence built is so amazing people literally stop as they drive by and shout to ask who did the fence for me. I have even had SEVERAL people knock on my front door and ask for the contractor who built the fence. Part of that is down to my killer modern fence design (Steve know's I am right on that!), but most of it falls down to Steve's excellent execution of my vision. Due to the complexity of the project, Steve estimated 3-4 weeks, and they landed a little early at 3 weeks despite a few mix-ups and change orders. As the project was wrapping up, I was really looking forward to hiring Steve to do more work on other landscaping projects, but sadly, Steve told me he was moving home to be closer to family and this was his last project! I would without a doubt hire Steve and his team again for my future landscaping needs if he ever returns to San Diego.
