Topped with a beautiful dome, the structure is in the Palladian-style and was originally designed by architect John Turner and built in 1854 from stone and yellow brick. It was heavily damaged by a fire in 1898 and repaired/expanded. A newer update was completed in 2014. One of the first of its kind, the courthouse is a prominent example of the combined courthouse, jail and county buildings erected by counties in many parts of Canada between 1849 and 1867 when such facilities were a requirement to achieve full county status. Very little street parking nearby, which is odd. I found a "15 minutes only" spot in front and was able to walk some of the grounds. A security guard said that there are lots a couple of blocks away. Founder of the Talbot Settlement, he was born at Castle Malahide, Ireland, a member of the Anglo-Irish nobility. In 1803, after serving in the British Army, and on Simcoe's staff, he was granted 5,000 acres in this region and settled in Dunwich township. Through political and family influence he obtained extraordinary powers to promote colonization. Talbot built mills, supervised the construction of a 300 mile road paralleling Lake Erie, established thousands of settlers in his "principality", and controlled the settlement of London. In 1817 St. Thomas was named for him. Eccentric and authoritarian, patrician in his manner and conservative in his views, by 1837 he had successfully organized settlement in twenty-seven townships from Long Point to the Detroit River." I've read a biography on every president in order…read morethrough Truman, and my bucket list includes visiting where each was born and their final resting places. Of course, I also make it a point to visit presidential libraries, national historic sites, etc. I've visited dozens of locations across multiple states. Garfield's home is absolutely incredible. Top notch. Starting in the original carriage house turned NPS welcome center you see an impressive little museum. The hat Garfield wore on the morning of his assassination... the Bible used when he took the oath, items used during the civil war, and his bronze death mask. I'm unsure I've ever been to a location boasting 80-85% of everything in the home as original to the family. "Jaw dropping" comes to mind. When I visited, they had an exhibit of the family's clothing. It was wild seeing Garfield's suits, and even his pajamas! By far, the most impressive room was the upstairs library where Lucretia collected Garfield's writings in 220 volumes. Again, jaw dropping. Stunning. Ya know, when I visit these places, I can't help but be overwhelmed with gratitude for people that thought ahead to preserve this history. It's not uncommon on these tours to hear about how close we were to losing the site...and this was no different. This house was almost torn down in the 1930s. Thank goodness for forward thinkers. To stand in that home...a home where four presidents including Grant and Hayes stood...will make your hair on the back of your neck do that thing... This made my top five presidential locations.

James Garfield was one of the Ohio presidents and he was assassinated in his first year in office…read more His house in Mentor is the one where he lived and from which he ran his front porch campaign for presidency in 1880. You start your visit at the visitor center. There you can check in for a visit in the Garfield house which is only accessible with a free guided tour. While waiting, you can explore the exhibition about President Garfield's life and visit the gift shop. President Garfield's life is an American rags to riches story. His father died when he was two and he was raised by his mother in poverty. For this he was mocked and bullied, which made him very sensitive. He left home at age 16 and went to work on a canal boat in Cleveland, managing the mules. In 1858 he married Lucretia Rudolph, and they had seven children, five of whom survived infancy, four boys and a girl. Therefore, the family needed a big house, and in 1876 Garfield purchased the Lawnfield estate in Mentor and its house, which was expanded and restored many times both during his life and after his assassination. The house has since been restored to its original color. On the property you can also visit his 1880 campaign office, which was originally his library, and see the windmill, which pumped water into the faucets, bathrooms, and laundry rooms of the house. The beautiful house is a remarkable and great part of the Ohio and American history. You also enjoy the original decoration and furniture of the house. The dining room is set as a replica of the festive dinner the Garfield family ate to celebrate the news that James had been elected president. When you are in the area, remember also to visit the James A. Garfield Memorial at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
