The venue is small and intimate so prepare to feel part of the performance if you sit in the front row. Yes, I sat in the front row! A fact that made for some hair raising moments during the many sword battles. The reception area sports a little bar for refreshments at prices you won't find just one postcode over and the whole vibe is warm and friendly. The play was Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the players were from the Tower Theatre Company who boast an 80 year history of putting on shows; quite a pedigree! So the show? I will admit there was a slightly shaky start but it didn't last long and this company soon found it's stride and I was hooked! I genuinely hadn't expected such epic sword choreography but it all felt scarily real. At one point Romeo dropped his dagger near my foot and it was all I could do to stop myself from kicking it over to him to assist. My stand out performances and scene stealing moments would have to be: 1. The scenes with Adam Lake (Romeo) Joe Lewis (Benvolio) and the very physical performance of Ario Green (Mercutio) perfectly depict one of theatres first bromances and gave me my favourite moments. I had forgotten how many laughs there were in this Shakespearean tragedy. 2. Watch out for Peter Novis (The Apothecary) who, despite his ever so brief stint on stage, possibly got the biggest laugh of the night with his little box of tricks. 3. My little moment of childish glee came from Tom Salyers (Friar Laurence) and his slight of hand as he picked imaginary flowers that miraculously appeared. In essence it didn't have the slickness or budget of a West End show but it did have something that money can't buy; Charm and passion. Two ingredients that, in my opinion, make for a more enjoyable and watchable performance. None of these actors seemed entitled or phoned it in. Go see it! If you can't catch it at this venue (and have better finances that I) why not try to see it during it's Paris run in June. Failing this then just keep an eye out for future shows by the company and at the venue and show your support when you can. You won't regret it! Worth every penny and cheap at the price of £12.

In the case…read moreof this venue, I can easily say that this in one of the most unique and creative spaces of small theatre. I saw a show which used every aspect of the space, from the wide open, yet intimate room, to the two large back doors at the back of the room. It was transformed easily into an old jail, a cozy home, an outdoor patio, to even a circus. If you have a creative team, they will make good use of this venue. Add to that the small, but well stocked concession stand at the entrance, you have everything you need for a nice night out. Supporting your local neighbourhood and artists doesn't get easier!

Have you ever been to a theatre-in-the-round? I had not and admit that I'd not even known what…read morethat meant. Then I spent an evening at the Orange Tree Theatre and now I'm all in. What a fun way to experience a show. A theatre-in-the round is one with seating on all sides of the stage. In the case of the Orange Tree, the concept continues on the balcony level. with long bench-seating (with backs) and a padded rail to lay your elbows atop. I'd booked tickets in advance, on-line and arrived at my (2) balcony seats to find an envelope with my name hand written on it. When I opened I found a letter - also hand-written - thanking me for joining them and welcoming me. This was an unexpected delight. The show I saw was Noel Coward's "Suite in Three Keys" (excellent) and I wish I'd had more time to see the other two Coward plays they were staging (with the same cast). Seats here were comfortable and they appeared to have a devoted crowd of regulars. Those folks would know what I didn't though, so here's your warning: save your drinks until post-show. The way the seating is arranged on the balcony level there is no way to get out of your seat mid-performance to, say, use the restroom. Likewise, if you arrive late you'll not be able to get to your seats if they're in the middle of a balcony row. For these instances, they allow guests to watch the show via video screen from an alternate space. You've been warned. So save the drinks until later and arrive on time. The theatre-in-the-round experience is fun and Orange Tree Theatre offers a great overall experience.

Made a belated first visit to this theatre the other night after knowing of it for many years…read more I appreciated their understated approach from the moment you walk in, with welcoming staff and not too elaborate decor in the lobby/bar area. The seating is intimate and I also received the first-time-attendee welcome note (as another reviewer noted), which is an extra positive touch that will linger in my memory. The play offered strong commitment from the actors and an energetic staging in the round. I would definitely consider attending another show here if given the chance.

Built in 1910, it is a classic of Edwardian design, with a richly decorated baroque and Adams-style interior. It is a Grade II listed historic building. It's also one of the largest venues in London, seating 1,700 in a broad auditorium. Taken over by the Ambassador Theatre Group in 2003, it is slowly being restored to its original condition. The theatre presents a varied repertoire, focusing on popular productions, including musicals, opera, comedy, special events and music performances. In recent years, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has had a season at Wimbledon, which has proved extremely popular (the acoustics are well suited to a full-sized orchestra). A speciality is performances designed for the whole family, such as tours from the Moscow State Circus, culminating in one of London's best pantomime seasons throughout December and January. We saw a stunning pro-am performance of 'La Cage aux Folles' there a few years ago, which beat the film versions hands down. The theatre has very good provision for those with disabilities - contact the box office in advance for details. Guide dogs are welcome and the theatre provides state-of-the-art infra-red listening systems. Although parking nearby is a little limited, patrons can use the Centrecourt Shopping Centre Car Park at a reduced rate (inform the box office to validate your ticket). Public transport provision is excellent, as the theatre is adjacent to the bus station, and just five minutes from Wimbledon station, for National Rail, underground and Croydon Tramlink.

Seating for our show wasn't numbered. It looks like the seating arrangements can be moved around depending on the production. It's a small theatre, so sound wasn't an issue and great views all around. We were front centre, so we had a brilliant experience. There's a bar downstairs and they have washrooms. (Didn't use either) A word of warning, if your show ends late (10:15 on a Friday night), there's no place in walking distance to grab dinner later. So plan accordingly.

Uninspiring to look at from the outside, the inside, too, holds back on the glitz and glamour. A couple of soulless corridors link the box office to the bar and the auditorium. The Bridewell doesn't put on large scale productions, it's a small theatre largely used for am-dram performances and the shows of small theatre groups. The auditorium seats around 130 and is quite adaptable. Depending on what performance is being staged at the time the setup is versatile, the seating can be changed and moved around so as the "stage" can be more easily manipulated and configured to suit the director's desires. The problem with this performance space is that the stage/seating areas are separated from the 'backstage' area by curtains only. This means you'll often hear the theatre staff and stagehands shuffling about and working away. Not dreadful but still a distraction. The bar is downstairs and isn't altogether impressive. The air in the bar has a feel and smell to it as that of a damp, concrete storage basement - which is exactly what it is/was. Other events are held down here and a small number of artworks from numerous small-scale temporary exhibits are displayed too. As well as some larger agricultural equipment/furniture. I imagine this is because there just isn't anywhere else to put it, though. All in all, the Bridewell Theatre probably won't impress you but it's theatre's like this that are necessary for grassroots production and, depending on the particular production you see, of course, I'm sure you will find some enjoyment from your visit. The nearest rail station is Carshalton, although Carshalton Beeches and Wallington are not too far either. Beautiful theater, restrooms on the main floor which is always nice. Sound was ok. On a strip with so much going on, lots of restaurants, lights & folks in the streets. I had a seat in the Dress Circle row A at the end of the row and it was cozy... if you're tall it might be a bit tight but that is the joy of this theater... worth experiencing! I was in awe of all the features and interior, it made the full experience spectacular and the acoustics were top top notch. I did manage to get a glass of wine at intermission before the lines got busy so I didn't have issues there but I could see how this might be challenging for other guests.
