Have you ever found that once you have your local, and your pub quiz, you kind of feel like you're cheating on it if you attend another pub quiz? Well, I had this situation with the Crescent. Large's pub quiz only came around once a month so it's wasn't that bad. And I wouldn't be a good little Yelper if I didn't use it as an excuse to check out this pub. Situated on the edge of the Northern Quarter conveniently close to the Arndale and Shudehill, The English Lounge is a cosy, traditional-looking boozer that serves down-to-earth pub grub and provides a bit of respite from the quirk and hipsterville of the NQ and the ostentatious tackiness of the Printworks posse. The homey cosiness of the place is exemplified with dark wood, leather sofas and quintessential Englishness - bookshelves in a pub anyone? I'm to be found at the Cityco meetings here and I always enjoy popping in. Sometimes I'll treat myself to a little wine beforehand and chat with some business owners, and that's always been lovely. The wine that is, not the business owners. Although for the most part they're alright, as it goes. There are all sorts of vouchers and offers associated with this pub so you could save a pretty penny too, especially with the meal deals. Nachos were average but I liked the spicy wings (they are not mega hot but basically standard wings as you would get in the States, which was good because I love those). My strawberry milkshake was also really good. The main event though was the insanely large "brisket ribs" for two, which are actually more than enough for feed three or even four people. We weren't convinced brisket ribs, as opposed to just brisket, is a real thing, especially as the bones didn't appear to have any association with the meat, but the real point was that the meat was really well cooked - no hint of dryness with a sticky sweet sort of crackling on the top that my colleague and I loved. Meanwhile, the parmesan truffles fries were incredibly good as well. Corn was average and overall the sides didn't look particularly exciting. So good food but ambience not at all ideal. Even if they didn't have diners they should turn down the music because it's unpleasantly loud - wouldn't detract at all from the singer if it wasn't at max volume.

It was only soft drinks and squash around the table, though worth noting that coke et al only come in small glass bottles, so could potentially end up costing a pretty penny rather than being able to buy 'in bulk'. After a huge amount of deliberation, I went for the spicy burger, topped with chilli and jalapenos; spice is one of the only things that can keep me on the right side of a hangover, so it was definitely a good option in that respect. Unfortunately I was disappointed in the texture/consistency of the actual burger patty as it was pretty bloody solid. The parmesan fries, upgraded for £1 from the normal fries that come with the majority of mains, were tasty and I love the cheese kick they give. The rest of the table went for the Sunday dinners, which you can have either as a single plate or sharer platter, with one deciding to replace the potatoes with some of the dirty fries - although our server didn't quite know what to say at first, she totally understood once the night before was quickly explained! There were happy nods around the table, though one or two mains about the gravy being a bit too watery - but that is usually an each to their own situation, so make of it what you will. The grand staircase and parts of the building go a long way to make you forget the god-awful carpet. I like how the pub has a good number of rooms though, which despite having the Wetherspoons feel, still makes you feel like you're in a different pub, and ordering to the table via the JD Wetherspoons apps makes it easier to stay in one place. 3* - Typical Wetherspoons and discount pub in general, but certainly not bad at all.
