Some things were creepy, some were a level of obsessive detail that required long minutes of marveling, and some were inspiring. 2 hours is a sufficient visit, and you will want to reserve time to peruse the bookstore and get a snack, lunch, or beverage at the café. The museum is in the garment district, and the art may inspire you to pick up some fabric to make a collage.

A floor up, sunlight floods a year-long showcase residency called Turbulence in the Balkans, featuring Eastern European works but unfortunately, no brass bands. Sad dance party loss. It's got a very good selection of books across many genres and from various geographic regions. Many of the shelves are arranged alphabetically by author, but when I visited in December 2019, there were also special sections for travel, Japanese literature, and American literature, among others. Outside of books, they also sell some cute cards, notebooks, and other stationary. The thing I most appreciated about the shop was the short, handwritten reviews that were clipped to several books throughout the shop. These definitely enhanced the browsing experience, and if you're stopping by without a specific goal or book in mind, they're a great way to decide on what books to check out more deeply. The shop was very calm and peaceful when I was visiting on a Monday around 1 PM. Although the bookshop is much smaller than a big chain store, it's actually not that small and has a very wide variety of books. If you're looking for a classic or a bestseller, you'll most likely be able to locate it here, along with many lesser-known titles. I'm docking a star since this place has gotten so incredibly popular. On the day that I visited, there was a giant line just to get inside. It does move quickly, but it was pretty crazy inside to navigate with so many people. I spent most of my time with my kids, reading them books. They had a nice selection in the back and a place to sit down. I didn't really get much of a chance to explore the full space. They ended up closing early the day I visited, and they start by closing the top floor first. So I mainly explored the ground level. I'd love to come back. But would prefer to find a day or time that wasn't so hectic. My partner bought a book and the line stretched through the entire store.

The shop opened in the 50s by an American called George Whitman and he initially named it Le Mistral. I believe the name changed in the 60s to what we know it as today. As a fan of literature, Shakespeare and Company is like Mecca. The Holy Grail, if you will. Whether you stick downstairs where it gets busy or upstairs where it's for more of a library feel, it's simply a magical experience. An experience that transcends you into the pages of your favorite novel or book of poetry. A timeless, nostalgic, and electric adventure awaits you.

This is definitely a very local spot - I'm sure we were the only non-Parisians there - but there is some English on the menu, and the server knew English as well. I sent back a drink and felt really bad about it, but our server was really sweet and just seemed concerned and asked what was wrong with it (it was the Jus Citron Gingembre - see below). I also left my backpack here and one of the servers ran a couple blocks to catch up with me and give it to me! THE WAIT: None on a Monday at 11:30am. They don't have many tables/seats and the place was about half full. By the time we left about an hour later, every table/seat was taken! THE FOOD: * Jus Citron Gingembre - 1 star This was pretty terrible, basically lightly flavored water. I would hardly call this a juice. Our server was nice about me sending this back and did offer to add more flavor to it. * Cappuccino - 4 stars It was creamy and more bitter that other cappuccinos I've had in Paris (which was good! Not too sweet). * Latte - 4 stars This was my replacement drink, and it was great! Lots of creamy foam. * Tartine - 4.5 stars Amazing!!
