The rooms were clean and spacious enough, and there was an air conditioning box (we were able to use the AC- but they only let you use it if it is VERY hot- it was in the 80's when we were there.) The breakfast was sub-par compared to the other 3-star hotels we stayed at during the trip and consisted of meats, cheeses, packaged biscuits, cereal, coffee, and (warm) milk. However, because we only paid about 40$ for our room we were totally fine with this. The hotel is in a great location in Montecatini, within walking distance to the downtown area, Montecatini Alto, and many great restaurants and shopping areas. Overall a good experience!

All the walls and most of the ceiling had murals on them. Bathroom had a separate shower and a whirlpool bathtub. Everything looked new and very clean. The breakfast spread was the largest I have seen in years. There were oranges to make fresh juice. A juicer to juice fresh vegetables. Cook your own soft or hard boiled eggs. Fruit, cheese, sweets, yogurt, coffee ect. I am sure I have missed some breakfast items. The only thing missing was fish that you find in Northern European breakfasts. In the afternoon you could get coffee or tea by asking. The one time I did this they did not charge me and I do not know if they charged the travel company. The only slightly negative item was our room overlooked a kitchen that made noise late into the night. With the window closed it was fine.

Until the Russians came. Forte Dei Marmi is a fickle place: like the Cannes of Italy, it is subject to the whims of the fashionistas, and therefore becomes a plaything for whichever country is having a currency cash flow. In the twenty four years I've been going there, I've seen the place over run by the English, then the Germans, and now the Russians. For twenty years, the manager of the Augustus, and most of the staff were like a second family to us: coming there every Summer was like coming home. But then the Russians over ran the place with their big tips and even bigger breasts, and suddenly the hotel didn't want to know. They went from booking us the same rooms at the end of every Summer to becoming pushy and difficult about finding any rooms at all, and suddenly all the old regulars moved on to other hotels...including us. The thing is, yes the hotel is beautiful, yes, it is one of the best places to stay in Forte, but compared to the rest of the world, it's actually just a rather tired and old fashioned hotel. It really pains me to say it because it means so much to me - and the sister / annex hotel, the Lido, is still beautiful and one of the most charming places I've ever stayed. Throw in the fact that you're paying three times the price as you would in another part of the world, and you're not really on to a winner. If bling bling and caviar is your thing, head to the Augustus; if not, find another hotel which will really showcase the charm of Forte.

They are friendly, accommodating, welcoming, and helpful. Our room was very comfortable. Breakfast was just right. If you'd like, they will make a great cappuccino for you. The location was also perfect, in the heart of everything. We had two large pieces of luggage with wheels and it was an easy 10 to 15 minute walk from the train station. One evening Andy had left a note on the desk counter near the front door recommending a restaurant not far from Rinascimento B&B. Alle Bandierine (address: Via Mercanti 4). It's an easy 5 or 6 minute walk in the direction of the train station but much closer as you don't cross the bridge over the Arno River. As is typical for dinner this restaurant opens at 7:30PM. We arrived at about 7:50PM and we almost couldn't get in. I suggest arriving a few minutes before it opens. The food and service were excellent. I highly recommend giving it a try. Do stay away from Anita Osteria for dining. Another suggestion made by Andrea is to walk on the top of the wall. This wall was built in the mid 12th century and offers great views. It's the oldest wall in all of Italy. If someday a return to Pisa is in the cards, I will definitely stay at Rinascimento Bed & Breakfast again. A warm and inviting place to stay in a perfect location. I highly recommend this B & B.
