Dr. Edwards is an orthopedic surgeon who is renowned in his field, having been the first to perform many different types of spinal surgeries in Georgia and having worked with many college and pro athletes. The Spine Institute also has an in-house physical therapy clinic, so I will break this review into two parts. Part 1 - Dr. Edwards, Mr. Adams, PA-C: I had five appointments with the doctor. The first appointment, where I was initially evaluated, was handled by Dr. Edwards' Physician Assistant, David Adams. Mr. Adams surveyed my experience with back pain and performed a series of tests which included testing my range of motion, strength, and reflexes. Mr. Adams, in consultation with Dr. Edwards, ordered an MRI and a follow-up appointment. In the meantime, I was prescribed medicine and physical therapy. The length of time between my first appointment and my follow-up appointment was exactly one week, with my MRI promptly taken in between. The process was fast and efficient. At my follow-up appointment, I saw both Mr. Adams and Dr. Edwards. At this appointment, I learned that I had two ruptured discs. Both Mr. Adams and Dr. Edwards pointed out and explained the problem areas on my MRI. Dr. Edwards had a good discussion with me about what was going on with my discs, what may have caused it, and my treatment options. He also answered all my questions. Treatment-wise, he prescribed various medications and physical therapy at his office. After learning of my disc herniations, Dr. Edwards was very particular about which PT clinic he wanted me to go to. At my third appointment, after 5 weeks of PT and no significant pain relief, I was seen by Mr. Adams again. At this appointment, both he and Dr. Edwards agreed I should proceed with an epidural. Dr. Edwards' office referred me to an anesthesiologist where I had a three sets of injections done. After the epidural injections, I saw Dr. Edwards again. This time, he was accompanied by resident M.D. David Fiedler. Based on my age and symptoms, Dr. Edwards did not recommend surgery. Instead, he recommended I receive IDD (intervertebral differential dynamics) therapy from a neurology group. Based on my visits with Dr. Edwards, I find him to be a very knowledgeable doctor and I like his conservative approach. He is a surgeon at heart, but won't recommend surgery to anyone unless they truly need it. I highly recommend grabbing an 8am appointment (first appointment of the day). I was in and out in just over an hour for my 8am appointment. I had two 9:30am appointments and I was not seen until about 11am (about a 1.5 hour wait) for one of them and nearly 12pm (an over 2 hour wait) for the other! Part 2 - Physical Therapy: I saw Joy, a physical therapist who is specially trained in the Watkins Protocol, a lumbar/trunk stabilization program. Joy received her training directly from Dr. Robert Watkins in California. (Dr. Edwards is the first to introduce the Watkins Protocol to Atlanta.) I saw Joy for 7 weeks. She is pleasant, friendly, and gentle but also assertive. My first appointment with her lasted about two hours because it involved an initial evaluation. Like a doctor, Joy was able to explain a lot of what was going on with my spine and why. She also explained the body mechanics behind the Watkins exercises and why they were beneficial to me. I noticed Joy seemed more knowledgeable and spent more time explaining things to me and answering my questions than physical therapists I've worked with in the past. After the first visit, my appointments lasted about 1.5 hours each. All of the physical therapy exercises are done in a room that overlooks Downtown Atlanta. From left to right, there are views of the Georgia Dome and Pemberton Place (Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke) to Tech Tower and Bobby Dodd Stadium. At 18 stories high, the view is very nice to have to work out to. Joy printed out a packet of exercises for me so I wouldn't forget to do them at home. She is flexible on scheduling and doesn't pressure you to make appointments. She's accommodating in that sense. Her methods and advice are sensible and practical. Other Comments: The rest of the staff - Keosha, Lina, and Sandy - are great. They are good at answering questions, being responsive, and taking care of insurance and appointment scheduling. Teresa, in billing, has also been helpful when it comes to insurance. The Atlanta Neurological and Spine Institute moved from the Atlanta Medical Center on Boulevard to Emory University Hospital Midtown on Peachtree, next to the Bank of America building. It is located on the 18th floor of the hospital. Parking in the parking deck costs up to $6 for one day. I normally paid $5 for each of my visits. The office does not validate parking.

I have had two separate operations on my back: the first was the top of my vertebrae and the second on my spinal column in my lower back. The results: I no longer walk with a cane and no more trouble breathing after four years of pain and suffering. After only three months recovery I am as active as always even though the true recovery period is approximately a year. Both my husband and I had done the research and knew we needed surgery but Dr. Edwards insisted we have second opinions and all proper tests before he agreed. He reviewed our X-ray results with us and the before and after images are amazing. Yes, the wait can sometimes be a bit long for your appointment but that is because he is not on a fifteen minutes and off you go time clock. Dr Edwards cares for the entire person and if you have special needs he will give you the time. The best of Dr. Edwards is that he is truely a man of God. Your back is a pretty important part of your body (and, actually I had forgotten from HS Bio all there is to your "back"!)...so I have been increasingly worried over the last six weeks about what is really wrong. Enter my first visit to Dr Schiff. The first thing I have to rate is the staff. Exceptionally pleasant, efficient - the office runs like a very smooth machine. I did have the second earliest appt (815) and arrived before the first person, so I was seen swiftly. Always a plus in a dr visit. I talked with his nurse, Sonia (yep, I got her card as I left, too), about medical history (looong) up to my current problems. She even let me answer out loud instead of writing all my answers down on that darn paper, and just put them in the laptop. Then I got Xrays done (another nice person whose name I wish I remembered!) and was right back to the exam room. Dr Schiff arrived quickly (see, this efficient thing is a repeat theme) and probably spent 20-30 min with me. Sparing you all the results, let's just say it's not dire but it's not great. He and I covered the pain, the locations, all that and he did a full bend here/push that/move this way exam. He ALSO said- I think this is very important- that we would cross that bridge if/when needed when I inquired about the shots (um, epidurals) that can be administered for some kinds of pain/injury. Whew. And I hope that the regimen of 4-6 wks of PT (they have several PT offices in convenient locations as part of their practice), the 6 day course of Medrol and a muscle relaxant at night will get me back on the right road. He also noted that this must NOT be treated as a "no pain, no gain" kinda thing and I can do yoga, but with modifications and a hard stop if anything hurts. Yes, sir. I don't love needing a back dr but I am grateful I was sent to Dr Schiff.

As he came back 15 min later, he did couple manipulations, left again for another 10 minutes. Then I was put into an Xray room, the doctor left again to take care of another patient. After waiting another 20 min, I had an Xray done. Then I waited in the other room for another 25 min for the doctor to let me know that he will see me in 2 days. For the second appointment I was called 30 min later for a 3 min procedure. I made my 3rd appointment for 10:00 am to be the very first patient and guess what? After waiting in a room for 35 min I went to the front desk to ask how much longer I had to wait. A lady replied that the doctor would be with me shortly. Doctor came by 5 min later to show his face and left. 10 min later he brought back my Xray, left it with me without explaining anything, and went to another patient's room. After 10 min he came back and showed on the skeleton what needed to be fixed with my spine. When I asked him to point my issue on the Xray, he said that he would come back in a moment and left the room again. He comes back 15 min later to move me to another room to do spine adjustments without giving any explanation of the problem and what needs to be treated. When I tried to remind him that he was going to go over my Xray first, he got very irritated and almost yelled at me to stop asking questions. He then left the room without giving any comments. I have never seen this kind of an attitude and unprofessionalism from a doctor! None of my questions were answered that day. I spent 1 hour and 30 min that 3rd appointment and left without any explanation of my Xray and received no treatment that day. Awful service, several patients are seen simultaneously. Guess why, cause it's "all about money" office.

Staff was kind to let her sit out in waiting area. Once fine I go to get my mom and noticed she spilled her cup of water on the floor. I asked the lady at the desk if she could give me a towel to clean it up. Her eyes darted to me and I could hardly hear her say no she was obviously mad. She came from behind the counter with some paper towels and threw them on the floor getting it up with her feet. Seeing how upset she was I offered again to clean it up she glared at me and re focused on wiping up the spill with her sneakers. She was nasty and rude. Not professional at all. This would be a reason for me to go someplace else. It just wasn't that big of the deal she made it to be!

The person I saw (Walls), seemed somewhat unsure of himself. He did some things that made me better, and a couple that made it worse. I told Walls (I don't know that I can call him Doctor) that I wanted a follow up appointment as soon as possible since I wasn't better. He told me that HE is back in on Tuesday. I asked about Dr Salzinger and was told he was in Monday morning. I had to then ask if Salzinger had appointments Monday morning to which he replied 'yes'. I then said I want to make an appointment for next available time. Walls then said '..ok; Tuesday morning then?'. I had to remind him that I wanted to be seen as soon as possible. He was more concerned with me being HIS patient and not the timeliness of care. 2. I asked for something for the pain. He said he cannot write a prescription. HUH?? A doctor?? 3. The paperwork I was given to fill out mentioned billing my insurance company. Well, he insisted on payment from me at the end of the 'treatment'.. no option for insurance. Further, I was just given a small paper receipt. Now I'm trying to get a proper receipt from them that outlines my visit and what they did. Guess what.. NOTHING! I called and the office person said they would email it over right away. Well, I'm still waiting for it and it's been 2 business days. I don't know the legitamacy of this place if they're scared to give you a bill that says what they did. I can say that, if I don't get this after day 3 I'll be taking them to the insurance board. I'm not saying they're running a scam, but it feels less than legit at this point.

After seven treatments it was clear that their therapy was not working and I discontinued therapy. I was assured that the almost $200.00 I had on the books would be returned to me. When no money was forthcoming I stopped by the practice and talked to the owner, Dr. Salinger. He looked on his computer and agreed that I was owed a refund. Later that day his secretary his secretary called and said she thought I had been there eight time and I would not get any money back. I laughed because on my visit to Dr. Salinger he had commented that "wanted to be great neighbors." My recommendation is that you run, not walk away from this practice
