I am not exactly sure why but I only discovered Estrel's Caramel Cakes when we moved to our Quezon City residence a few years ago. So despite being around since 1946, my tastebuds have only known Estrel's in less than a decade. Such a shame though as I would have loved growing up to Estrel's instead of the typical Jony's Cakes my mom used to always buy. I'm ecstatic though that Estrel's is just literally around the corner from where I live. That meant that I am usually the designated cake order and cake pick-uppers during a special occasion. I'm not complaining though, it's always pleasant to go through their catalogue of pretty cakes and choose the prettiest one for the party. Estrel's designs their cakes with such elegance and charm, no wonder they are the go-to cake shop for special events. Something many people might not know is that their Oatmeal Cookies are just as yummy! So while you're waiting for your turn to be called when picking up the cake, make sure to grab some of these cookies to munch on.

If a cake place has been around since 1946, you would think that they are that good. Such is the Case with Estrel's Caramel Cakes. People come from far and wide just to sample their famous (and really pretty and dainty) caramel cakes. But getting your cake fix is not as easy as it seems. This is not the kind of cake shop you walk into and just buy from. Estrel's makes the cakes fresh on the day they will be picked up, so it is highly recommended that you call them a day before. If it is peak season (holidays, Christmas, Valentine's day), having a longer lead time is better. Trust me, you really won't find a cake there that is not under someone's name already, I've tried. Now on to the cake itself: What makes it so unique is that Estrel's has been using the same baking methods and the same high quality ingredients and wonderful cake recipe for generations - as in no change from the beginning of time. The result is a smooth chiffon cake with an airy texture that is perfectly complimented by a thick, rich caramel icing that is neither too creamy nor too sweet. The butter roses that top it are so artistic it feels like a sin to eat it. For a heavenly caramel cake lovingly baked by hand and decorated to perfection, you can test my patience and perseverance with your advanced order process any day. It is worth it.

Now here's something for every occasion! Whether we're celebrating a birthday or our newfound freedom brought by summer vacation, Estrel's Caramel Cakes never fail to give us what we want. And what do we want? Sinfully delicious cakes, of course! I'm not usually a fan of caramel because most of the caramel-based desserts I've tried were too sweet that I easily get tired of their taste. Oh, but Estrel's cakes suit my taste just fine! The cake is made of moist chiffon and a smooth layer of caramel with buttercream roses set on top. What I like about their cakes is that the caramel is subtle and delicate in flavor, much like their elegant designs. However, just remember to place your orders at least a few days before you plan on picking up your cake, 'cause they never accept walk-in customers.

Love this bakery and for the quality you get, it's completely worth the price. Nothing tastes like…read morethey skimped on ingredients or used any substitutes for the real thing. This branch is in a really convenient location and is maintained well. The people who work here are also super nice! I bought my birthday cake (the Purple Carousel chocolate cake) here, and they gave me an extra bag of sweets! My favorites are their: *Lemon bars - really great lemon flavor and have a tart, refreshing sweetness *Chocolate revel bars - probably the best I've had *Chocolate Campfire cake - very rich, but in this amazing way where you don't get tired of eating it! I've also had their: *Purple Carousel chocolate cake - classic chocolate cake with these chocolate wafers on top *Mini Pecan Pie - not the consistency I prefer in a pecan pie but the flavor was still very good *Mini Chocnut Pie - light, could use a stronger chocnut flavor, I really liked the crust though *Cookies - I love cookies so I usually get 1 or 2 with whatever else I'm buying that day, theirs are crispy on the edges and chewy on the inside *Quiche Tinapa - Liked this a lot and just ate mine chilled, but I think it would be better to warm it a little at home

I wasn't in the mood for fastfood, so I just decided to walk to Merced. With their conspicuous cake displays, affordable prices and proximity to the EDSA - Quezon Avenue intersection, it comes to no surprise that Merced has been around (and survived) for 40 years. I've already tried Merced products because SM Hypermarket in Centris Station (Quezon Ave.) sells some of them in their "bread section" or whatever that area is called. Merced has plenty of pastries to choose from. Some are baked in their kitchen, while some are obviously sourced from other places. The prices are quite lower than the usual cake shops and they sell many local products (e.g. cassava chips, toasted pastillas, etc.). But I settled for one order of bibingka (P50), which tasted good. Nothing spectacular though. The place wasn't crowded and only a third of the restaurant was occupied. I find their choice of centerpiece for the tables a bit tacky - large potted plants that are big enough to block the view of one's companion. The waiter seems to be all alone, but he was very attentive and refilled my water even if I didn't ask for a refill. There is a closed area reserved for functions. And customers can get made-to-order cakes for a reasonable price. With a little work, a fresh coat of paint and a change of table decorations, I might consider going there again and not wait another 3 years.

It has become a tradition in our family to buy a Merced cake whenever there's an upcoming birthday. Merced has a lot of pastries to offer, but we go there for their light and airy mocha chiffon cakes smothered in "Marshmallow Fluff"-esque icing that may be too sweet for some. Unlike other bake shops, you don't need to place an order days before the date of picking up your cake. All you have to do is make a call, and they'll have your cake ready for pick up 20-30 minutes later. This is great for impulse-buying surprise cakes!
