I discovered Estrels when I was still working in a TV network in Quezon City. It was the cake we would order if there was a special occasion at the office (a boss' birthday, for example). It's the perfect birthday cake because it tastes good (everybody wants a slice of that caramel and buttery goodness!) and it's always beautifully decorated. No need to think of fancy designs because they got that covered. For my daughter's first birthday, we had a fairy garden-themed party. I had ordered a customized fondant cake from a nearby supplier as the main cake and my mom ordered the big rectangular cake from Estrel's as backup. But at the day of the party, the expensive fondant cake took a backseat and the Estrel's cake took center stage. All our guests loved the cake. Some of them even had second helpings. I'm generally not a fan of sans rival... and I just found my favorite one! Their Sans Rival is made with almonds, which makes it even more awesome. I needed to buy a cake on the spot for a party and they had some 8" cakes available. Yay! This used not to be the case. If one had not ordered prior by at least a day, getting a cake was not likely. In the 10+ years I've known them, the prices have jumped dramatically. The colored rose icing (you could even pick the color: yellow, rose, orange, pink, purple) came for free with a P550 cake. You paid, I think, P100 for red rose icing. Today customized rose icing costs P400 or more, for a P700 8-inch cake with a thin center filling. So you easily spend P1100 for the most basic customized cake. I hope they do not alter their icing recipe anymore, because the caramel icing formula has changed at least once in these ten years, and I find it less good. Any more changes to either flavor or price, and I'm not likely to order this again. But it is good. It's just become so expensive. read more

She later found out that it was made at home by someone who apparently had a gift for making caramel cakes. I find their caramel cakes okay. I am not really into cakes. One of the rare exemptions (redundancy necessary) is Estrel's Caramel Cake. It was my cousin's despedida and, along with our tita, she bought this cake from Estrel's. The famous Caramel Cake, they said. All our relatives took a slice and the next moment they were all praising this Caramel Cake. I should test it, I thought. One bite turned me into a fan. It did not feel like bread to me. It was soft, slightly sticky caramel. I felt like I was eating caramel-flavored mallows. There were no hints of bitter chocolate and also no liquor as part of the ingredients yet I liked it very much. What my cousin bought was worth PhP 900. That was quite expensive but maybe they have smaller sizes at cheaper prices. Still, if they all turn out to be pricey, you can reserve the Caramel Cake for special occasions.
