Etax and Shad are the best! I came to Etax over 5 years ago. Before Etax I was not receiving the max on my tax returns (but paying the maximum). One day, I saw some crazy kid holding up a sign on the street as I passed Cypress College and I decided to come in and check it out-- (I have to give props to the hard-working street sign holders!); My Tax Guru Shad is multifaceted; Sometimes when I came to visit (and while Shad's accurately number crunching my taxes), the conversation flows like a 'Confession' for all the crazy stuff that happened during the year; some year's we just talk about family; other-times we are Philosophizing; This year it was about the Bitcoins. I've been coming here since (i don't remember)- i think 5 years now. And i must say, this place is busy, but the service is great. I meant, you can make an appoinment and they will admit you exactly on your appointment. Some place i've been to, would just have you wait for forever. Shad, in particular will look everything, every possibility you can get the allowed maximum refund that you may be entitled. This place indeed charges you failry lesser than the other tax preparer. I went to Liberty Tax for estimate, and if i decided to file my tax with them they would have charged me almost four times the one i paid with Etax. Shad's the most laid back tax preparer, it's like getting taxes done by the homie, but who is still professional if that makes sense. I've been with other preparers over the years, but I think they only come from the main office to help when super busy so he's my guy. He asks a lot of questions, but it's in the flow of while he's inputting the numbers, and he does this because even though the answer may be the same as the previous year, if in the current year you went to school or had student loan interest paid or daycare expense etc. you might be eligible for some credits. I appreciate the honesty and blunt(ness). This years return was great, but he advised on adjustments to make as my income will be going up. I've done W2's, 1099's, kids, school, daycare, all that and so far no issues. Their price is fair to me compared to many places out there, but I go back for the service. They got free estimates so I'd recommend getting one if you haven't filed yet. Been doing my taxes since at least 2007 so he's been around that long at least. Ever had that horrible feeling of owing the feds a chunk of change during tax season? I haven't, and I don't ever plan on it! But I realize now that my money situation is a bit more complicated than when I was young and single, I need a pro. I got my taxes done by Shad this year after doing them on my own for a while; my husband and I moved up in income, bought a second home, and I was scared of having to pay astronomical student loan payments due to the Income-Based Repayment scale... so we decided to file as married-filing-separately to keep my fedloan payments down. It seemed really tricky, so I literally fretted for 6 weeks. Luckily, through the power of yelp, I found eTax & Shad. I had previously gone to a different tax prep place, but they wanted to charge me a week's salary! Um, no. Then I ran the numbers through Turbo Tax and I must have done something drastically wrong because it told me that the hubster owed big time. So I gave Shad a call. I really thought that even though I was going to a highly rated pro, we were going to get a miniscule return because I had heard that filing separately bites people in the bum, but Shad looked through all of our forms very carefully and got both of us a nice return. I had a secret wish-list number in my head and he hit it right on the money. Shad even crunched the joint numbers for us, and found that even if the fedloan issue weren't there, we would have been better off filing separately this year. IMPORTANT: Shad is a very ethical person when it comes to doing taxes, which means that he's not shady in his work OR shady with his customers. Shad is also very chill, isn't a jerk, and knows his stuff. I can definitely see why he has the ratings he does. ETax is going to be my tax place from now on; I am VERY picky when it comes to... well basically anything, but when someone really knows their stuff and charges a fair price, I'm always ready to return again and again as well as tell people and spread the word. Based on the reviews here I called and inquired about tax preparation services from Shad. On the phone he mentioned pricing varies and he does free estimates. I gave him some basic info and he quoted me $270. I called back later and confirmed an appointment for that price. I arrived for the appointment and spent an hour with Shad as he completed my tax preparation. Once complete, he tried to charge me $395. I referenced our phone conversation and his quote of $270 and he didn't seem to remember. I argued the point and he did not budge. At that point I asked if I should just gather my papers and leave before I get more upset and he said it is up to me what to do next so I got up, thanked him for wasting an hour of my time, and left. I don't think $395 is an unreasonable price, I just don't do business with people who are not honest. read more
