This hidden gem. This place is amazing. The atmosphere is beautiful, relaxing and very zen. The staff is so so kind. From the moment you walk in you are greeted with such friendly people. The food is amazing. I got the veggie gyoza and the potato croquettes, my partner got the fried chicken. For dessert we tried the mochi. Which is SO refreshing and flavorful. I love this place. My partner is learning Japanese and the hostess was so kind she had a conversation with him in Japanese to test him. We will be back. read more

Etsu is a delicious Japanese restaurant in Liverpool, it's pretty good for lunches as well as for a more formal evening meal. The first time I went, I popped in for lunch and ordered the bento box which was yummy! I recently went for dinner and the quality was just as good as the first time, which I was thrilled about, I ordered the pork dumplings to start and then the Sashimi which was very strange... not in a bad way, I'm just not sure if I like raw fish. I had the chef's special, Bailey's cheesecake for dessert, which I managed to squeeze in, and that was also delicious. The staff are sort of what you would expect in a restaurant in Japan, very calm and chilled out no matter how busy the place is. They're very polite and helpful, excellent service. read more

As my previous reviews will testify I am always bowled over by independent family owned restaurants. These humble abodes are as refreshing as mints after a spicy meal. As refreshing as a big oak tree's shade on a sizzlingly hot day. As refreshing as a wave of water caressing your feet as it dances past you on a white sandy beach. I love them!!! It comes as no surprise then that I hold Etsu in very high regards. The owner of the restaurant has firmly placed his time and efforts in to bringing authentic delicious Japanese cuisine to Liverpool. In the modern age of chained monotone restaurants, this simplistic way of thinking I regard as bold, and absolutely fantastic. I must admit I am still bit of an amateur when it comes to Japanese food, with Pakistani, Italian, Chinese and Thai all featuring higher in the pecking order. However I am coming taste buddies with the Japanese food. For a long while I was in the camp "How can you eat raw fish??". However not long ago after giving it a try I was converted, to a certain extent anyway!! With over 15 appetizers and main courses to choose from as well as a big range of sushi dishes, noodle dishes and Japanese curry there is plenty to keep everyone happy. I cannot recommend highly enough the thick juicy Udon noodles which get me salivating at the mere thought of them. The Soy ramen noodles come in at a close second, the thinner egg noodles carry more dense feel in the mouth which is just as appetizing. The feel of the restaurant is fresh and clean. The consistency in attention to detail is evident the moment you walk through the door, from the service, to the decor right down to the food itself. As if I haven't made myself clear already, Etsu is a Japanese Gem nicely placed in Liverpool's crown which makes it shine that much brighter. Great Japanese restaurant in Liverpool. We were looking for good sushi and we found it. This place seems fairly authentic (I have not been to Japan, so not 100% sure). For a Japanese restaurant, it was more than your typical sushi and terriyaki (don't recall this being on the menu). There were lots of noodle options, sashimi, nigiri, and makis. We tried the combo plates as we didn't know what to order. The sushi was fresh, rice was perfect, and they use real wasabi. The sake was an interesting experience. It was served in a standard sake glass, but the glass was placed in a small box and the sake was poured into the glass until it overflowed into the box. Then they kept pouring until the box was half-full. They said this is how it is served in Japan. I loved it! Overall great experience. Would highly recommend. read more

Etsu is my favourite restaurant in Liverpool and easily one of the best places I've ever visited. I make sure to go here for almost all special occasions (birthdays, etc). The food is excellent (personal recommendation being the Tonkatsu - gorgeous) and the sake is even better. Make sure to try the warm one, you won't be disappointed. Just visited Etsu for the first time, and let me tell you it will be the first of many! We arrived for our reservation early but were still seated immediately. The restaurant is small but immaculately presented with well-spaced tables (so you're not elbow-to-elbow!) The service was prompt and extremely friendly, and the waitress even offered her tips and suggestions (for example, to soak the tempura in the udon noodles to give them a better flavour). The menu is well laid out and simple to understand with clear descriptions of what each of the dishes actually are in case you don't know your katsudon from your tonkatsu. There is a lot of seafood on the menu, but if you're like me and can't stand fish there is still plenty of alternatives and a fair few vegetarian options too. Now for the most important part: the food. Oh the food! Without question the best oriental cuisine I've ever had, and to be frank one of the best restaurant meals of any flavour I've ever had. I ordered the Yasai Tempura (battered vegetables) to start which came in a generous portion and were simply delicious with light and delicate batter. For the main I had Gyu Teriyaki which was sliced sirloin steak in a delicious sweet sauce with rice and dressed salad on the side. Now I like my steak and often order it when I eat out, but this beat the pants off of anything else I've had in a very long time! The steak was approximately two inches thick, eight inches long, and cooked to the kind of perfection that puts most steakhouses I've visited to shame. Simply divine. Dessert was a wonderful little ice cream called Yuzu, which was described as being a citrus flavour similar to lemon. I don't know if I'd describe it as similar to lemon as it was much sweeter yet still with that citrus tang. Whatever it was it was fantastic and a great way to end the meal. All the food was immaculately presented as if each plate was a work of art. My friends each ordered different dishes and between us we sampled most of the menu, with clean plates all-round. After some yummy Japanese nosh and sushi loveliness? Head to The Strand where all your Oriental needs will be met. Everyone raves about this place and rightly so, it's one of those rare places that lives up to the big expectations. It's very simple and looks unassuming so you might not be thinking it's the buzzing place everyone's been talking about at first, but keep at it, because it surpasses the hype. If you're in the mood for something substantial you'll find bento boxes, katsu curries and stir fried noodles alongside appetisers like soft shell crab, gyoza and veggie tempura. For sushi all the classics are in place such as maki, nigiri and sashimi with a variety of fish and seaweed. It's all super high quality, fresh and tasty with the best cuts of seafood, and the service is excellent. Definitely give Etsu a try if you're in the area, it's still pretty central and you'd do well to spend the evening here after a hard day's shopping. read more

Having returned from a year out in Japan, one of lunching ladies proposed Etsu for group's gathering. She found it very authentic and, like us, delicious. There is a great range of Japanese dishes on offer and we wached in delight as the food was expertly prepared in full view. As the only guests dining at the time the restaurant was open to inspection; it was very clean and cool however, it is quite small and I would imagine it can get rather crowded and I would recommend booking for lunch and dinner. I think Etsu is ideal for a light lunch; the portions are relative to the cuisine and if you're looking for a quick stodgy fill up you're best heading to Greggs. The Strand is not exactly in the heart of the city and Etsu is a little off the beaten track but I think it's worth discovering read more

Probably the best sushi I've had outside of London. The fish was fresh and the rice was juuuust right! The lovely, polite waiting staff added a great atmosphere to the delicious food. Amazing sushi available! As a vegetarian sometimes I struggle to find good vegetarian sushi that isn't just cucumber or horseradish shoved into a roll of rice so I am so glad me and my fella found this place! Wonderful selection of vegetarian sushi and a huge menu full of non vegetarian dishes which the other half much enjoyed. I'm lucky to hail from a part of the world where sushi is cheap, plentiful and delicious. My expectations for this restaurant were modest at best; Etsu both confirmed and lowered said expectations. I had a tall, well-poured pint of Asahi to go with my meal. No complaints here. The mixed tempura consisting of lightly battered prawns and veggies was what you might expect as well. Price point aside, these were fine. Things started to go downhill with the mixed sashimi. While the quality and freshness of the tuna, salmon and squid were impeccable, the portions were abysmally tiny. I had expected as much to some extent, but not to this extent. Even at its best, agedashi tofu is not a terribly exciting dish, but ours was almost flavourless. The green, red and white seaweed salad was well presented and would have been promising, but for the fact that the wonderful seaweed flavours were overwhelmed by rocket and other additions. Our biggest disappointment came with the unagi and kani kama maki rolls. Contrary to expectations, both consisted of copious amounts of rice wrapped around tiny pieces of cucumber, with tiny shavings of eel and crab respectively garnishing the tops. Flavorless, unsatisfying, uninspired, overpriced. If you can stand the garish chain atmosphere at Yo! Sushi, they do far better maki. We ordered just before the kitchen closed, so all of our dishes arrived at once. Had they arrived separately, per usual, it's possible the quantity/quality/price ratio would have been less overwhelming. The ambiance is casual and pleasant; our servers were helpful and attentive. I still hold out hope that there is decent sushi to be had on this side of the world, though the number of awards this place has won, coupled with the other rave reviews here, gives cause to doubt that. Etsu may well deliver a colorful, pleasant and culturally interesting (though overpriced) experience for sushi newcomers. Non-newcomers will probably want to pass. read more

Good service & good food in a quaint unpretentious setting. However, this is not Sushi for the Sushi Connoisseur. Sushi is an artform that takes many years to study and perfect. If you have had "real" sushi before this does not compare. Saying that a Sushi addiction is PRICEY which Etsu is no, in comparison to many. For a casual fix this place is perfect! I would definitely recommend it and go back but im afraid if your looking for something closer to the real deal Saporro is still your best bet in Liverpool, even though it is hugely overpriced and still not really the greatest. read more

Went to Etsu on a Saturday night for dinner, we didn't have reservations, but were seated immediately. My husband had the pork tonkatsu with a jack and coke, I had the teriyaki chicken and a glass of the house rose'. They were both very good. Service was excellent, very quick and polite. read more

I maybe a bit harsh about this review because we went to another Japanese restaurant recently. And it was indeed the best sashimi, sushi technique that's comparable to Japan! Have to say Etsu is nice, the staff are very friendly. Food wise it's somewhat average which I will say the fish is not outstandingly flavoursome.
