The atmosphere here is very appealing. They were quite busy and we didn't have reservations but were seated promptly in the bar area. We were still able to order off the regular menu. Visited Sapporo Tepenyaki Liverpool on a Friday evening with a hen party - no one could prepare us for what we were about to experience! After you are introduced to your chef for the evening, the fun truly begins! The chef's are fantastic at what they do and very entertaining - I I think we got some added extras due to being a hen party (who knew the things you could make with an egg omelette!) The chefs had everyone laughing from start to finish! Food was prepared and cooked freshly in front of you. All our food was very tasty and well presented with generous portion sizes! Staff were very attentive and kept the drinks flowing all night, we were even introduced to the restaurant manager which was a nice added touch! I was very complimentary about the Teppanyaki in Manchester. The pattern looks to continue with this branch of the trio of restaurants. First impressions are everything, and this restaurant blends the authenticity of a traditional Japanese decor with the contemporary modern. Th lighting is relaxed and slightly dimmed to give centre stage to the chefs to perform heroics and take centre stage in the melodrama that is the live round table cooking experience. Dining here really is as theatrical as it gets. On a busy weekend it is much like an amphitheatre where crowds can be heard far beyond the premises, ooing and aaaing to and fro. The food is the icing on the cake and the key to the enjoyable experience lest you forget is the quality of it. Seeing all those fresh ingredients sizzling away before your eyes creates a great sense of anticipation. You know it looks fantastic, you know it will taste fantastic and you wait and when it does land on your plate and you do sink your teeth into it, that split second starts that dominoe effect of satisfaction through your body. Whether its noodles, sushi, tempura or even a steak you go for, you will not be disappointed. I personally am a massive fan of the Yakisoba egg noodles, fried on the teppan grill with mixed vegetables with yakisoba sauce accompanied by a selection of meats (Chicken breast for me please!!) On my last night living in Liverpool before my exile back to America, I was taken out here for dinner. I had wanted to try this place out for quite some time, so I was happy to get a chance to go. I had been to restaurants with the same concept back in the US, so I was used to the format and fact I'd be having dinner with strangers. The others at our table seemed unware (and uneasy) with this, though. They were all couples around our age, except for two men who appeared to just be friends. No one spoke or looked at each other, not even to their own dates! At least, not until my BF and I got all lovey-dovey and the women started imitating us with their SO's. If you're not familiar with this type of restaurant, basically people are seated around an open grill while chefs cook your food for you in stages. They perform tricks with the food while doing it and the more you watch them, the more you realize if you tried any of their antics back home, you'd probably lose an eye or two. The chefs were fantastic, but BF and I were the only ones at our table that seemed to appreciate their performance. This of course got us extra food and attention :) It was a bit sad, though. While other tables were roaring with laughter and having a grand ol' time, half our table sat staring at their plates with almost forlorn looks on their faces. Coming here is a very unique experience, especially in Liverpool, so if you're going to be going here be prepared for A) Sitting with strangers around the grill B) Interactive fooding with awesome chefs C) A great time! Unfortunately, because it was Christmastime there was a set menu that was a little out of our budget, so even though we loved our chefs and waiters, we couldn't afford to leave much of a tip. The rule of Sapporo Teppanyaki is thus. Just as Gok Wan repeats frequently that 'it's all about the confidence', at this restaurant it's all about the spectacle. It's about those places we saw on American TV in the mid to late 90s where things were cooked in the middle of your table, and it took us staunch Brits a while to catch up. When you get down to the bare bones of it, Teppanyaki's kind of a fusion restaurant as I've rarely seen so many potatoes used in Japanese cuisine - I've said it before and many others have about this eatery, it's a great restaurant, it's just not a great Japanese restaurant. It's not the best value meal you'll ever eat in your life and can be quite dear, but if you're rating value on the entertainment factor, well, that's different. Lending itself perfectly to group scenarios is the show they put on, flipping and chopping and cooking your meal right in front of you. It's definitely tasty stuff they knock up and the service is exceptional; guaranteed a fun time will be had by all. Kids are particularly stunned by the spectacle, making it the perfect dining outlet for families too. Some of the food is particularly palatable and not too flavoursome for young stomachs so this adds even more weight to that argument. Be sure to save a little room for the sweet spring rolls, they're filled with chocolate and they're just too delicious for words, plus the kids will love those too so try not to strike their chubby little hands when they're reaching for one. I know, it's difficult as a chocoholic, but the youth are the future, remember. As I've said it can be a little expensive, and if you're just going for the food I wouldn't advise it. However if you're going to be entertained, in a group scenario, and want to have a laugh or find somewhere a little different to take the kids, it's well worth the money. I just don't get it. The food is mediocre at best, theres not a great deal of choice and the price, for what you get, is astronomical. The theatrics from the chefs are annoying - but I can at least see why people (especially kids) would enjoy that aspect of the experience.. if your idea of a good time is having someone flip french fries about on a griddle and then try to flick the hot fries directly into your mouth (and usually onto your clothes) then this is the place for you if you like to pay a fortune and come out hungry - book your table. if you want to pay top whack for crap wine they will help you every time. if you like the banging of pans and loud singing and shouting by a gang of chefs and staff every time someone has something to celebrate - and its' often and LOUD.... enjoy. Wow. Unbelievable. Literally one of the best restaurants I've been to ever. Okay so they cook the food in front of you, which is pretty amazing. They also do loads of tricks with fire and throwing food around into people mouths and that kind of shit. Still amazing. But most importantly, the food is an absolute joke. The sushi is probably the best I've ever had, and this is followed by whatever you have cooked on the grill in front of you. I had monkfish and my girlfriend had scallops, both of which were two of the best things I've ever had. A couple of crisp Asahi's and a bottle or red to share and you're looking at £80 odd quid, but its well worth it! read more

Sapporo Teppanyaki is situated just on the outskirts of Liverpool City Centre which means you're not in the midst of the revellers and you can park your car easily when coming here. As soon as you enter the restaurant you are greeted warmly by the staff, shown to your table if it is ready, or shown to a comfortable seating area if you have to wait, which can occasionally happen during busy times. As soon as you are shown to your seat the waiters and waitresses are on hand, firstly asking if you would like a drink from the bar. The waiting on staff will stay nearby your table at all times during the night, particularly if there is a large group of you. The food is, in the most part, prepared in front of you by a chef and served straight from the hotplate. The food is prepared in a dramatic theatrical manner but this does not slow down the service. Even if it did you wouldn't notice as the chefs are incredibly talented and funny. The food is delicious. Even the freshly prepared fried rice is amazing. I have dined here with meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans and all of them have enjoyed their food a great deal. The staff will happily and quickly bring more drinks during your meal and the service they provide is top class. Sapporo is suitable for couples, small groups and large groups. They have tables of different sizes around hotplates and if you go in a couple or small group you will be fitted in around a table with another group but no matter which table you sit on there is always plenty of room and you don't feel as if the owners are just cramming in as many people as possible. The only downside to Sapporo is the price of the food. This is not somewhere to go for a cheap meal. For a set menu you are looking at spending at least £30 but for this you will get about 4 courses of amazing food and you will have a lot of fun whilst you are there. Wow. What a spectacle. If it's entertainment and danger you want when dining then Sapporo is the place to go, they really play with fire here. Cooking and doing tricks on an open grill infront of you the staff are more performers than chefs! Having said that, it is top quality food, and a unique dining experience. Be prepared to sit with strangers, it's a great way to meet new people as you'll have the common ground of awe at the expectation of the sizzling food which makes the end result on your plate the most enticing morsel ever! A favourite for large groups; birthday parties and stag do's, the atmosphere is electric. We were greeted by the lovely warm manager Costa and were immediately surrounded by classic Japanese decor with a Western twist. You can also enjoy your meal in the bar area which is more for snacks like sushi and soup noodles; we indulged in the Duck Tum Yum soup which was delicious (spicy and infused with lemon grass.) and Mix Smoke Sushi... with all the delighted gasps from the main dining area it was an exciting atmosphere and I recommend it whole-heartedly! read more

Everybody is thrown in together which is a nice change for our British sensibilities to brought into closer proximity with strangers to enjoy a night out as you sit round the big open tables. My friend has been here a few times and kept mentioning it, so when she suggested we go for her birthday I was really up for it. The food was good, if overpowering in portion size, you don't need anymore than the main course as it comes with potatoes (I know not very Japanese eh) veg and rice. Me and my boyfriend shared two starters, I was full after them so kinda tainted my view of the main course. But was really nice and well cooked. The chef we had was good but to me it did seem a little like he'd been doing the same routine for years and just wanted to get it over and done with. That said he was very good with his knives and eggs etc. Definitely a party restaurant and had loads of atmosphere. Not cheap though, you do pay for the entertainment, but only fair due to the number of chefs to customers. Would probably go again but order much less. read more

Went to this Japanese hibachi steakhouse with a group, allowing us to take an entire table to ourselves. We all ordered one of the preset menu combos, which were quite generous in both variety and portions. The highlight of the meal was the appetizers, chicken gyoza and spare ribs are a must have. The server kept our sake cups filled and the chef served as entertainment. The biggest drawback for me was the poor timing on food. Some of us were done before others received their main course, given it was a quiet Wednesday night, they could have used a second grill table so that we could have eaten together. read more

Really enjoyable night out, friendly staff and a clean and modern spacious restaurant. I love Sushi so was really happy when this place opened a number of years ago. Many people go for the entertainment value as the chefs work their expert instruments on delicious culinary delights but the food is top notch also. A previous visit to the Manchester restaurant left me with nothing but high hopes for the Liverpool location. Unfortunately, I was left dissapointed and quite frankly appalled. My partner and I ordered Shogun from the Teppanyaki menu, my partner had yet to take part in the experience and I had spoken highly of the food and its remarkable quality. Following the serving of the sautéed potatoes, we were given our stir fried vegetables and, mid way through eating, I noticed what appeared to be a very transparent bamboo shoot however, was disgusted to find that it was in fact a 2 inch piece of clear plastic. I tapped the sharp edged piece on the table to ensure I was in fact correct in identifying the foreign object as plastic meanwhile the other diners on our Teppanyaki table sat with their mouths hanging open, clearly as shocked as I was. To rectify the situation, rather than dismiss the entire bill, the manager offered to remove just ONE meal from our bill. I found this absolutely appalling to say the least. Having only 3 restaurants in the country, you would expect quality and service to be of a higher standard. My partner and I refused our desserts and left feeling very dissapointed and warned off from returning to Sapporo in future. read more

this has to be one of my favourite restaurants, not only is it entertaining, but the food is excellent. its not the cheapest place to eat, but its also not the most expensive. I would say about £20- £25 per person is average. all the diners are seated around a cooking area, and the chefs come out and cook your food right in front of you, which i think is excellent as you can see exactly what is going on with your food. the chefs also do a little routine involving knife throwing and fire. this restaurant is not just a place to go and eat good food, but its a whole event in itself. The food isnt all about sushi and raw fish, there are a lot of options available on the menu, all of which are cooked right in front of you. If however sushi is your thing, then they also offer that on the menu. i wouldnt eat during the day before you go there as you will come away fit to burst. the portions are massive, and in between courses the chefs are cooking up little things like salt and pepper potatoes, stir fried veggies, fried rice.. and they expect you to eat it all, playfully teasing you if you dont! all in all, this is a fun night out, and not at all what you would expect of a restaurant. read more

yeah, good food, but if you order one of the set menus, you do get rather full by the time you get to the main course. It does feel rather scripted and the chefs do seem as if they are doing 'tepenyaki by numbers'. They came over, did the cooking, caught eggs in his hat, threw potatoes at the guests etc etc. The same thing happens at all the tables, a bit of originality and spontaneity would of been nice. The chefs also left us for long periods of time inbetween courses, and they werent Japanese,but Thai apparently and the owner is Greek, so im told. so it all felt a bit commercial and not a proper Japanese experience, which is sort of supposed to be the whole idea of Tepenyaki isnt it? I have been to other tepenyaki restaurants and felt they were more authentic, and i have been to Japan and experienced it over there too. It is rather expensive, but i guess you pay for the whole experience, not just the food. That said . . if you want a fun night out, to try some different types of food, and have some entertainment with your meal, go with a bunch of mates and you will have a great night out. I went there for my birthday last winter. The service was excellent, the entertainment was good (the chefs cook "live" right in front of your eyes and they throw in a good measure of humour and party tricks for the "audience" too!). The food was also good, both the cooked and the raw sushi dishes. The portions were good considering this is one of the more expensive Japanese restaurants here - normally with expensive restaurants I'd expect much smaller portions. read more

I visited Sapporo Liverpool on 9th August as part of a group of seven people. I was extremely displeased with the level of service received and certainly wouldn't give this restaurant a five star rating. We arrived promptly as instructed (several times) for our 8.15pm table to find our table wasn't ready. We remained seated outside for some time before space became available in the bar area. Once we moved indoors we found our table was still not available and no apology was offered for the wait. Once eventually seated it was still a wait for a further two couples at the mixed seating area. In all we waited well in excess of an hour just for our order to be taken and much longer before we actually received our first taste of food. Once we had eaten our main course our dessert order was taken in two parts which meant some of our party had eaten their sweet whilst the remainder waited to be served. The food, when it arrived, was great. The 'entertainment' was mediocre compared to my visits to Sapporo of a few years ago. It's time this restaurant returned to earning their high fees instead of expecting people to put up with shoddy service. This was an altogether disappointing visit and something I certainly wouldn't expect from a restaurant where the bill reached nearly £400 (excluding our first round of drinks). It's not an experience I would like to repeat and quite frankly I'm embarrassed that four of my party drove in excess of four hours to endure that type of service. Incidentally I complained directly to Sapporo and haven't even had an acknowledgement of my complaint, no surprise there. Save yourself some money folks, there are dozens of restaurants in Liverpool serving equally impressive food at a fraction of the cost which do actually make you feel welcome and valued. read more
