As much as I enjoy visiting all types of public parks, "Eugene H Ahner Park" is just average at-best. Location-wise, this particular park is only a quick 6-minute drive from my home. And as far as the overall size, it is quite impressive. Located directly on Manzanita Ave. and just south of Coyle Ave. in Carmichael, this park serves residents from Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, and Foothill Farms. Ever since moving close to this area back in 2016, I've been here at least a couple of dozen times. Parking can fill up on the more comfortable days and at times, I have had to park across the street and walk. Now I will start off with the good... The park is spacious with lots of greenery to enjoy a picnic, play frisbee, play football, and sunbathe. There is even a decent sized walking trail that circles around the whole perimeter of the park, roughly 1/3 mile. Additionally, there are several basketball courts (with fully intact rims and nets), tennis courts, two large play structures (complete with swings, slides, a jungle gym, a rocking car, and other various kid-friendly things. There is also dedicated workout/exercise gear here including an elliptical and a back/arms combination apparatus. And finally, there are drinking fountains that were in working order the last time I came here. Now I will state out the bad... The main downfall (that many other Yelpers have mentioned) as well as something ongoing at many public parks is the homeless issue. Many of which keep to themselves but nonetheless, it can be a deterrent for many families not to visit here. Another is some of the open-air drug/alcohol use. During several occasions, many visitors have sat in the parking lot while playing music, getting high, and drinking. I've noticed on several occasions local law enforcement monitoring this area so hopefully that will help to a certain extent. And then there's the public restrooms; my advice is that if you don't have to go, then don't. I've had to use it and at times here has been no running water, no soap, and no paper towels. All in all, "Ahner Park" is just A-OK for me; I recommend coming here during the late-morning and afternoon hours for the best experience. There is lots of natural sunlight without a ton of trees so it is always good to bring a hat/visor and sunblock if you stay for a prolonged period. Again, as long as you use common sense, watch your surroundings, and lock your vehicle, you should be fine. With that said and done, I am giving Ahner Park just an average 3-star rating. read more

Although the park was nice. There were quite a bit of "cracktivities" going on. I visited on a Friday at 9:30 in the morning and there were about five separate crackheads at the park. Not the greatest place to bring a small child in my opinion. I gave three stars because the park is very nice and it's possible I just had an off day. If you are a single mom bringing a small child to the park, I would avoid this one. read more

What a beautiful fun park to take your family too. Great playground, a few structures are filled with fun activities for small children to older children. They also have several swings for young toddlers to adults. I love that they have a special chair swing for special needs children or adults. Everyone should enjoy the outdoors to swing and play. The park has a large field and tennis court area to play within sight of the playground. Drinking fountains and bathroom is available. They do have some a couple of homeless people who were in the park but they stay off to themselves. read more

While I would like to give this park a 3.5, I am rounding up to 4 because the park itself is nice. The park has been completely transformed from when I was little and I'm now able to share it with my son. What I like: There are two structure areas. One is a little smaller for the young ones, while the other is larger with more daredevil style activities. There is so much to do. There's a rocking car, a sensory area with a steering wheel, spinning "create an animal" activity and a chalk board. I love that there are swings in both structured area. The smaller are has infant swings and a tire swing (YAY!), while the larger area has a special needs swing and ones for bigger kids. My son really loved going under the structures and running from me lol I can't bend that low anymore. I also enjoyed the variety of slides! So many to choose from. Another favorite was the sand area with water feature. I hope all parks keep these! They also have workout equipment, a basketball court and tennis court! Large open field. What I didn't like: SOOO MANY HOMELESS. The crowds that show up are often a little sketchy. I also am not a fan of bark. But that's my personal opinion. read more

What can I say, we have been taking our 15 month old here with her friends & family for a few months now & we love it, best park we have been to! With other reviews about homeless, they are at most parks, but don't bother anyone, here never on jungle gyms & are friendly so we feel safe. The park has a lot to offer like a big field to walk animals, rocking motorcycle, sandbox, spinning wheel & lots of swings so even if their are a lot of kids there, there are still open spots to swing with the 2 separate jungle gyms! We have a lot of fun here & would definitely recommend coming here! read more

The park itself is nice - basketball courts, tennis, two playgrounds, some exercise gear and a lot of green space. The downside is that like the other reviews mentioned, it's overrun with homeless people. The kids weren't able to play on one of the playgrounds because of the homeless people sleeping on it, and the bathrooms are filthy and disgusting. It's a fun place to play, but watch your kids closely. read more

Homeless everywhere. This park has so much potential, two playgrounds next to each other (one for bigger kids one for smaller) Beautiful grass field and trees, plenty of shade and sun, it's beautiful! BUT, I found a little drug bag yesterday on the playground and that's when I decided to take my boys somewhere else. I had already been contemplating that decision because of the excessive amount of homeless people who shockingly setup there "camps" right next to the playground. I have three boys so it can already be stressful keeping my eyes on them but when there is all this riff raff around it's better not to come here. read more

Not the best, but not the worst. I took my little brothers here the the other day and it was ok for the most part. The play structures are nice and the area in general is pretty decent, but the overall "social" aspect wasn't worth the walk there. It seems to attract these wanna be "thuggin'" teenagers, smoking pot and using foul language, rather than actual kids who actually enjoy the play structures. We left and wound up going to another park because of those punk kids. If it weren't for that crowd, we would probably go back because my youngest brother had a blast until they showed up. read more

The police/ city seriously need to do a better job at regulating the homeless at this park. There was one who was very manic a few days ago and he drove everybody out the park. He was yelling at kids and threatening them, disturbing neighbors behind the fence and yelled at every person around him. About 20-30 people all left along with my child and I. read more

It's fantastic how this park has been revitalized! I moved near the park about 2 years ago and I was taken aback with the homeless here. It is very disconcerting because unfortunately, they don't keep the parks clean. Well...within the last few months this park has been totally revamped and the homeless have vacated. It feels like a real community park now! There are so many families enjoying the park with their children and it actually feels safe! I hope it stays this way! Good job park service! read more

I came here this morning with my two young children. There were so many homeless people. It made me feel so uncomfortable. This is the third time i have been here and every time its filled with homeless. Not a place for me or my children to feel safe . I wont recommend this park until they clean it up. read more
