While on holiday in July 2018, I collided with another vehicle. Minutes after the incident, I telephoned Europcar but was told by the agent they were too busy to take the details though the agent promised to call me back within the hour. After waiting for over two hours, I called Europcar back myself. Later on, the official Europcar accident report would say that I had reported the accident late.
When I returned the vehicle to Europcar to the branch, the Europcar staff member took photos of the car and estimated the damage to be over £900, which he promptly charged to my MasterCard. Some months later, I received a formal invoice for around £836 reflecting the true cost of the damage. I assumed that Europcar would deduct the payment taken in July and issue me with a refund. They did not. Instead, in October - only a week before I will be departing for a two-week trip to see family overseas - Europcar has charged my credit card a further £836. I called Europcar to ask to be repaid immediately and was given the runaround. I called a second time and was only then informed that a 'caseworker' could have up to 6 business days to respond. When I specifically asked the agent to note that the matter was urgent because I would be travelling overseas within the week, I never got a straight answer from him saying that he would note my request. I'm still in limbo, and am likely to be unreasonably inconvenienced because Europcar has charged my credit card hundreds of pounds above the amount agreed in the contract I had to sign or initial, oh, a thousand times, which must surely be illegal.
During the process, which has been amateurish and incompetent on Europcar's part from start to finish, I was asked to provide a new statement of events by different call centres on multiple occasions. It took ages to hear back from anyone. After I had provided my statement with irrefutible evidence of what had taken place, Europcar chose to settle rather than try to claim back some of the money I had paid. Following on from earlier, although I gave Europcar screen shots to prove that I had called them to report the collision only minutes after the accident (the call had lasted 6 minutes), the official log said I had reported the accident late.
