Eusebi is a real Glasgow institution. They have been serving up traditional fresh homemade Italian cooking and produce for years. But, if you have ever been hesitant about visiting the original store in deepest Shettleston, fear not as the owners have opened this absolutely stunning new and shiny deli in the heart of Woodlands.
The new shop doesn't fail to deliver either, continuing to sell great REAL homemade Italian food to go, such as rustic style pizzas, meatballs in ragu, roast chickens, grilled veggies and so on. It's a perfect stop if you are late in from work and fancy a quick, healthy take away. They also have a fantastic selection of Italian cakes and pastries but these are usually completely sold out by the evening, so get in quick!
The new store now also doubles as a restaurant. It has a really great, laid back cafe feel, like somewhere straight out of Italy really. I popped in with a group of friends and not knowing what to eat and being my usual famished self, we opted for a pretty huge selection of dishes.
Obviously on the cards was gonna be pasta, and I opted for a prawn Bavette which was tasty and powerfully garlicky, but it was quite a small portion for the (perhaps) hefty £14 price tag. My chums chose more wisely, for example the meatball maccheroni was sublime, was a more generous portion, packed a better flavour and was more fairly priced.
Other dishes I tried were a Roman Style Pizza "Pinsa". The dough was fabulous, kinda like a squashed ciabatta, perfectly leavened and crispy. At £11 for the Pinsa Calabrese, (mozzarella, potato, onion and sausage) I thought again it was a little steep, after all you can get a whole pizza in places like Paesano for half that price!! Nonetheless it was delicious, even although it was slightly over cheesed for my liking.
Being a self confessed Aubergineoholic I could not overlook a delicious Caponata side. Caponata is basically a stew of aubergine, tomato, olives, capers, pine nuts with a sweet and tangy vinegary hit. It was fantastic and reminiscent to what I've had in Sicily before. Our other side of Fritto Misto was again very small, and the batter wasn't quite right so probably not worthy its £6 price tag.
I have absolutely no doubt that this place will go for strength to strength as they suss out exactly what the West End clientèle wants. I visited just a few days after opening, and if its this good now, I am certain its gonna be a 5 start joint really soon.
This is a great addition to the Italian dining scene and once again its fantastic to see places selling REAL Italian food rather than your boring Spaghetti Carbonara's and the like. So its a big thumbs up from me and a grazie to Eusebi :)
