The rather modest outside, all in red and white, make it all the more impressive, first church here mentioned over 1100 years ago, that one we see nowadays was built 800 years ago, constructed to be the reincarnation of the New Jerusalem here in Europe, visible from all directions and at great distance, so everyone passing the Rhine Valley or the Autobahn from Cologne to Frankcort or viceversa, will not be able to avoid having an eye on it. From the distance modest and clear, at the close look one of the richest and most impressive churches I ever met, you will be surprised how rich the interior is eqipped, decorated and painted, if fact one of the richest old churches in Europe. If you happen to pass by, leave the Autobahn at Limburg North and go to the city center, easiest place to park the car is the next door storing place of the town of Limburg, only 500 yard by foot to mount up to the cathedral, just passing the surrounding medieval old town. It always gives me great pleasure from time to time to pass and to have a quiet handful of minutes rest in peace up there, afterwards hurrying back to the Autobahn, back to the outer world. Also to mention, Germans claim it to be the only European Cathedral named after St. George, the Patron Saint of England.

St. Stephan is a large Gothic church in Mainz that although the original structure was built in…read more990, the building you see today was started in 1267 and through the years additional sections were added thru the 14th century. It is the oldest Gothic hall Church in the Upper Rhine district of Germany and is known for it's stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall. The church was heavily damaged by bombing during WWII and parts of the vaulted ceiling were unable to be restored leaving sections with a flat ceiling. Nine blue stained glass windows were created by Marc Chagall between 1978 and 1985. His contribution to post-war Jewish-German reconciliation. It's really not and easy location to access by car. GPS took us through a neighborhood and then wanted us to go down a street that was blocked off by bollards. We did end up happening upon the church luckily after a couple of attempts. There is not much parking here at all so it's probably best to park elsewhere and walk in. The church itself is not ornate or filled with murals as many other European churches are. If that is what you are hoping for, you will be disappointed. This is an historical structure. Read up on the structure's history and Marc Chagall's contribution before visiting. Definitely worth a visit for it's architectural and historical significance.

Whenever I find myself in Europe I love to seek…read morethem out and explore to take in the art and architecture, as often in the old world churches and cathedrals housed some of the great cultural artifacts of the time. Dom St. Bartholomaus doesn't disappoint. It's a gorgeous church that's free to enter and walk around. If they are holding service you may need to wait until they are done, but it's worth it as this one is chock full of gorgeous artifacts and artworks to enjoy. If you love museums I recommend paying the very cheap entry fee - I think maybe two euros - to their small museum which is to the left as you enter. It's small, but houses some really amazing religious antiquities. Only pro tip I have is that like many church in Europe there are no public restrooms. If you're in Frankfurt there is no reason not to stop and take in this beautiful landmark!
