This plaza was perfect for people watching; clowns, mimes, a gorilla and three different brides all pass through. Lots of restaurants, outdoor seating and church and a beautiful fountain. The band played & we sat here to take it all in. Romerberg is the historical center of Frankfurt's old town, known as Altstadt with traditional half-timbered houses & medieval Fountain of Justice in the square's center. Most buildings were destroyed in WWII, local authorities have reconstructed the main Frankfurt Square in recent decades & built new buildings in accordance with original plans. The square is dominated by the Romer building complex (City Hall), seat of the Frankfurt city administration. In Romerberg there are many cafes, shops, craftsmen's workshops & museums. Recommended are St Nicholas Church, St Paul's Church &Historical Museum. The square is also well known for Christmas Markets & imperial coronations. The Coronation Route, a walking tour through the colorful historic old town is recommended. read more

When visiting pretty much any city or town in Europe, one of the main draws is the main square. Or one of several town squares. Römerberg is just that. It's a great place to start your exploration of Frankfurt. You'll be surrounded by beautiful architecture. There will be a statue for you to check out. It's a touristy area, sure (so I wouldn't have a meal in the area), but it's also a place locals go to congregate and hang out. With Germany getting bombed heavily during WWII, Römerberg still gives you the feeling of old school Germany. And while I wasn't there in December, if you are, you'll be able to check out the famous Christmas markets Germans are known for. Spend a little time here, walk around, and take it all in. read more

Welcome to Römerberg, arguably Frankfurt's most famous spot for tourists to come and capture a gorgeous square in one of Germany's iconic cities. My local friends made it a point to take us here to experience the historic area. The architecture here is gorgeous with building designs that remind me of the Netherlands. There are a lot of cute boutique shops and cafes/restaurants that were clearly made for tourists. I enjoyed walking through the area, snapping shots, and seeing the different kinds of people that end up coming through during the day. Aside from the vibes, there isn't much more to do here but definitely still worthy of a visit. read more

I had the incredible opportunity to visit Römerberg during the Christmas markets on December 1st and the plaza looked stunning. It was beautifully lit and super bright. I got to try so much food from multiple vendors. And even got to ride the carousel. And the center piece of the night is clearly the Christmas tree! Absolutely stunning! This is my second time visiting Römerberg. Outside of Christmas time this place is a beautiful plaza rich with history and it has plenty of restaurants and shops around. Cool historic square. We enjoyed visiting the Romerberg square today. We got here early this morning and the square was pretty empty. Then after a 100 minute Main River cruise, we came back to the square and it was jam packed. The storefronts are really beautiful. We went into one shop to buy some souvenirs. There was some sort of celebration going on today. I think it was for a school fraternity. There were older alumni there as well as young students. Setup for this was a beer wagon and brat cook. We got in line and ordered beers and brats. There were a number of rows of picnic tables setup for this even and we found space there to eat/drink. There was a band made up of older and younger people. It was nice to eat and listen to the music. Romerberg square is a must-see when in Frankfurt. read more

A little underwhelming to be honest. There are a couple of restaurants, but not much else to do from what I can see. This is an old Roman square, it is the quintessential and classic view of Germany for me. There are also some Roman ruins nearby. There are lots of cute little shops and kiosks for food and drinks. This is where you can find the true Tudor style buildings in its original design and form. It is so much more detailed and classier than the basic cookie cutter styles back in the states, but we try to emulate the best we can. Would love some of these designs back in MI. read more

My second time visiting in almost 30 years and absolutely nothing has changed (which is good!). This area was almost completely destroyed during WW2 and when it was rebuilt, they went to great lengths to return it to it's former glory. Such beauty in the architecture. I'm not exactly sure how to rate Romer since it's not a business but I'll tell you this: I walked in the rain for an hour to get here. I spent perhaps 10 minutes or so taking pictures and just soaking in the beauty of this place.. It was worth it. If you're in Frankfurt, you HAVE TO visit Romer. It's gorgeous. A must stop for any tourist visiting Downtown Frankfurt. This small square is where you should start your exploring of Downtown Frankfurt. Take the train/subway to the Dom/Romer stop and you're smack dab in the middle of it all. Check out the cool looking houses (see the pictures), take tons of pictures of the square, check out the souvenir shops and take more pictures. Visit Dom Bart's next door and the Eiserner Steg (bridge) across the street. Walk north and you'll find all your shops, restaurants, establishments at the walking street. Don't be afraid to open that map or you might get lost. read more

What a cool place to visit! My husband and I were in Frankfurt for the New Year and we were told to visit the quaint old town. There were LOTS of tourists but it is the holidays so it was expected. We got some great pics, enjoyed a coffee and pastry at a cafe on the corner and enjoyed the scenery. Love the character (even if it's not the original old town). I'd recommend checking it out if your looking for something to do! We walked the river and checked out the surrounding buildings/ landmarks. read more

I was in Frankfurt for work, but this highly listed landmark was 5 mins from my hotel, so I checked it out on my way home one evening. I think it is listed number one on Yelp under land marks. Essentially it's an old German square and seems to be the main meeting/focal point of the riverside area of Frankfurt. If you have been to other big European cities and visited some of their magnificent squares you are not going to be blown away, but it is definitely worth a look. It had old styled historic "looking" buildings, a decent statue, big flags, a big church, cobbles and of course some decent opportunities to take a couple of cheeky snaps for your Yelp or IG accounts. (If that's you type of thing!) I went when it was cold, but I can imagine it's better during the summer with the tables filled outside the bars, the beer flowing and the sunshine scorching down. Still well worth a ten minute wander round at any time of year though. read more

As far as landmarks goes this place is not bad. When you compare this to other places in Bavaria where all the original buildings are intact this place looks and feels young and reconstructed. There are some lovely building here and a number of tourist cafes. It seems like the location to get married or be photographed after a wedding. There were at least three wedding parties at the square when we got there at 10am. There were also loads of tourists about. If you are in Frankfurt you should visit this place. I would not recommend a special trip to see it when you can see some great history around other cities of Germany. read more

Houses: you come to view the nifty painted triangle shaped houses and the architecture. Supposed this is or was city hall and is recommended as a plaza or square to check out when in Frankfurt. Christmas Market: This is where it's at. I thought was pretty cool, strolling through all the stands and a couple shops being an American trying all the German treats: nuts, chocolates, wurst (sausages), apple drinks like cider and apfelwein. Strolling around I saw clothing, crafts, souvenirs and all sorts of nifty German products I wouldn't have fount here in the New York City Christmas Market. Crowd, People, Tourist: This is where one might find a tourist exactly where you're from, a visitor from a neighboring country also checking out Germany per say from France, or a local German passing to ask directions. Restaurants and Shops: Besides the main attraction of architecture there are some modern shops/restaurants or if you look hard enough like us, we fount a really traditional German restaurant with really old world decorations around this area to eat traditional German food. read more

I still remember the first time I stepped into the Romerplatz, and in a way I hadn't expected to see anything like this in Europe. While I had been to Europe previously I simply don't remember visiting anything quite a grand - well, there was Dam Square, but that didn't really register all that much. However, this is the original town square, and the buildings that surround it are absolutely gorgeous. While there are some restaurants and beer halls around it, to me it is more just standing in the middle and looking around that really stuns me. However, as it turns out, this is not the original as it had been destroyed in the war, but it does still hold that great, medieval charm. read more

The Römerberg is the square at the historic core of Frankfurt, named after the 15th-century Römer, or town hall, on its western side. The hall got its name for being the lodging place of Italian merchants, when visiting the city's mediaeval fairs, prior to becoming the town hall in 1405. The square is the location of Germany's oldest Christmas Market, which runs from late November until Christmas, but it was also here that the famous markets, trade fairs and book fair began, which laid the foundations for Frankfurt's modern equivalents that make it Europe's major trade-fair centre. As well as the Römer itself, the square contains the Nikolaikirche, which dates back to 1290, and a series of attractive half-timbered buildings, which now house attractive, but expensive bars and restaurants. The buildings themselves are actually copies, faithfully reproduced and completed in 1983, to replace the 15th and 16th century originals destroyed (along with most of mediaeval Frankfurt) by Allied bombing in 1944. The façade of the Römer itself survived the bombing more or less intact, although the building behind had to be rebuilt. Although it inevitably has a touristy feel, the square is a pleasant antidote to the anonymous office buildings and skyscrapers of modern Frankfurt, and serves as a reminder that this is one of Europe's oldest and most historic large cities. read more

Again, I really like the historic downtown area of Frankfurt; however, if you have seen other European cities, you will likely not be all that impressed. It's small and cute... but the museum row and the avenue of trees along the river is much nicer. It has quite a few historic buildings... but we should keep in mind that one of the horrible, horrible things that happened during World War 2 is that dozens of medieval cities were bombed and destroyed. (Believe me, I get how minor the architectural damage is compared with the real atrocities of that conflict, but still...) Frankfurt was one of them, so none of these buildings are really original. If you want to find actual medieval buildings, Marburg isn't too far away. read more

We came out to the square while on a six hour layover in Frankfurt. Really easy to get to. If you have luggage you want to store, get off at Frankfurt Central Station and go upstairs to track 23 where all the lockers are. The big ones are 5€ and you can fit 2-3 small carry ons in them. You'll have to switch trains here so it's not like you're having to go out of your we to do this. The square itself is pretty neat. There's a few restaurants and food stalls. It's a nice place to take a stroll. Also close by are a couple churches that you can go in and walk around. If you come during Christmas time, this is where they have the Christmas market. Sadly the last day was a couple days before we arrived. read more

This is the quintessential German square. Apparently, it is only 20 years old. Before the war, it looked very similar, then after the war, it was rebuilt with a modern look and then it was torn down to be built with the "historical" look. I had such a great time watching all of the wedding processions and all of the people walking around. Germany requires weddings be done in a civil ceremony and the location to get married is in one of the buildings in this square. I think they do weddings every 30 minutes, so it was so much fun watching the wedding parties. There were a few cafes and a few tourist shops, but it wasn't too crowded. As someone else said, I would not go out of my way to see this square, but it I was in the area, I would definitely visit. read more

I love this place though it can sometimes look too fake but still it's in the heart of Frankfurt: How can you not love it? I try to avoid the Roemerberg during weekends though; it can get craaaazy busy and crowded because of all the tourists! During the week it isn't as congested by tourists. The shops are really easy access. Some store owners are unable to speak English. Don't miss this stop in Frankfurt! It's amazing to see in person. A lot of it was reconstructed after WWII, but it's true to the original form. The buildings are amazing, there's lots to see, and even the tourist gift shops have everything you're looking for (Steins) and the people working in this area are very friendly. It's also incredibly close to a lot of other hot spots like shopping, restaurants, and it's just across the river from the museums. Hit this place up! read more
