Not to mention, a very small office...clearly, one person show. After a little research, I decided that I would see if this firm would be interested in taking my daughter's case. Dropped off some information... dogs barking... could barely get through a conversation with receptionist but did not hear back, right away. So... my daughter and I decided to run back by there to see if they had any questions and if they thought they could help with her case. Once, we pulled up, my daughter realized she had reached out to them about a year earlier. We thought... oh, what a small world story that she and I had actually picked the same company. Although, my daughter had not actually followed through with this firm from a year ago, she had not moved forward with any lawyer or her case. But she had, had several conversations and shared a few emails with person named Will. Again, a small world story that we picked the same office, a year apart. As we walked in, the same receptionist greeted us, that I had met from the day before... so, I proceeded to tell her our small world story and how there may already be a file on my daughter since she had sent medical information to this person named Will. I was just thinking it would save a little time if there was already a file. But then, this very loud female voice is yelling from another room (I had no idea that someone was even there, btw). She yelled, "OH, NO MA'AM! Just because she talked to someone, doesn't constitute a client/attorney relationship." She then, comes walking into the same room we were in and has this look of anger and defense. So, I proceeded to say... oh, no, I wasn't saying that... I was just thinking that there might already be a file or notes from a year ago. The receptionist has now introduced this woman as the attorney of this office. This woman, the attorney then repeats, her strong and nasty, NO, there is no file and again repeats that there is no client/attorney relationship. I then say, well, that's why we came by to see if we could establish one and hire YOU to represent my daughter. But I was so put off by her unprofessional outburst and horrible attitude that I looked at my daughter and said let's go. This isn't the right attorney for you. The attorney then huffs and said wait... here, take your paperwork with you. Clearly, she has had a bad day, a bad week, a bad month, a bad year... but to take it out on a possible client is shocking.

Unfortunately we asked him to handle a real-estate purchase for us and it was not done correctly. Let me explain. We purchased several pieces of property at the same time. During the process Mr Conner said he did a titlle search and title abstract. Well, he billed us for a title search and abstract. Fast forward 3 years and we are about to put a house on the property only to find out or deed was not properly executed by Mr Conner so we can't get a loan because we don't have a clear deed. I immediately contacted Mr Conner about the issue and explained what was found. Mr Conner promptly emailed me back and stated that "Things like this happen from time to time" and that I should reach out to the attorney who originally made the error and that it was not his responsibility. It was a very disappointing reply to say the least. Eventually we were able to get the titles corrected by another attorney and at significant expense to us. As a graduate of The Citidal I expected more. I can only assume he has forgotten the lessons in honor and integrity he was taught there. We all make mistakes but when you make a mistake you should own it and make it right not try to shift blame and weasel your way out of accepting responsibility.

All was well UNTIL time to sit down with the lawyer (JW) for closing. She entered looking and…read moreacting as if we were the opponents in a trial. We were there as the sellers on a simple real estate sale. She explained the line items on the sales document in a loud and grating voice. I asked a couple of questions. She got louder and more strident. THEN I asked a question about one of the line items that was actually in error. This did not sit well. She repeated "explained" the line item by telling us what was obvious on the document without acknowledging there was a missing entry. She seemed in such a hurry to move away from that item that, upon reflection, I'm not sure she ever listened to the questions that were posed. We did get paid for the missing item. On the last three lines on the document, she decided to leave the room to "give me time to consider those last lines." It was obvious I had already examined the document. She took offense when I said " we'll wait while you to go tiddle your winks."* (I really didn't mean to vocalize that.) She stomped back and I apologized for the comment. She wouldn't continue until I did. I thought it was a little comical. While I would never recommend this firm, I will say that the interactions with all the other staff were great. Up until encountering JW, I was considering this firm for my real estate law needs. Someone ACTING like JW might be great to have on your side for a criminal trial but there is no need to be unpleasant during a simple real estate closing. For context, I have bought and sold numerous properties and been present for many more transactions with many attorneys. Some have been laid back, some have been a little stiff, some have obviously been in a hurry (and several have apologized up front), but this is the first time that I have encountered an attorney that was just plain unpleasant from the first moments through the entire process. I sincerely hope this is NOT the norm but in the intervening hours since I left the offices of Wylie and Washburn I have made some investigations.
