    Me at EAC
    Cali M.

Not sure why the reviews are so negative. After doing a free trial day I decided to get a membership. Ive been to every gym imaginable in the past; Lifetime, 24hr fitness, Equinox, LA Fitness, local gyms etc. EAC is comparable to Lifetime, just smaller with less amenities. For example you can't get food or other services at EAC. This is perfect for me as I am the type of person who only goes to the gym to workout. Imo EAC has better machine selection & the smaller size of the gym is way more convenient for me. EAC is geared to people who actually want to exercise while still being a clean & peaceful environment, something I have found lacking in other smaller gyms. The locker rooms are nice and spacious, with shower, sauna, steam room. I feel comfortable enough showering here, taking my time doing my skincare & drying my hair, which for me is the difference between a regular gym and a luxury gym. I pay $80 a month for the base membership, I believe classes are free(I haven't done any) & personal training can be purchased, you can also purchase an extended membership which allows you to access the other locations.

On a trial visit to the EAC and I'll have to say, I am rather impressed with this facility. One of the sister branches of the Chicago athletic clubs, the EAC was founded in 1980 and is a 55,000 square foot multilevel facility that has state of the art cardio and weight machines (some with built in tvs and ports to plug your Ipod/phone in), free wifi, several group exercise class rooms, a basketball court, personal trainers, a lap swimming pool with 4 lanes, a decently sized hot tub, therapy pool (for Evanston hospital patients), a climbing wall with a height of over 3 stories, a sauna and a steam room that I swear emits lavender/mint scented steam! They have free towel service, hair dryers for use and there are free herbal scented lotions in their bathrooms. The main floor is also home to BOX Evanston. So my friend and I arrived here at 2pm and left at around 6:30! Time was well spent here and there is much to do at the EAC with group fitness classes offered nearly every hour! Their class schedule offerings are impressive and carry a wide range of classes from gentle Qi Dong to TRX. In fact I didn't know what Feldenkrais was until I got there! I looked at the class schedule for today and they offered yoga 3 times a day which to me is perfect because my other gym only offers yoga three times a week and it's either mid day on a weekday or in the evening at 8 pm. Or on a Sunday in the middle of lunchtime!!! WTF! Neither of those times are conducive to my schedule so it's nice to find a place that offers yoga on a daily rotating schedule. So we arrived, checked our bags in their lockers (that are btw keypad locked), and went off to do some laps in their pool. The pool is heated so it was a comfortable swim. I like how the pool facility has pool exercise equipment to use free of charge. My friend and I enjoyed our time using the Water Dumbbells and Kick boards. After several laps followed by pruny looking toes and fingers, we both decided it was off to the hot tub to unwind and relax. So far so good. We then went to their steam room that emits a lavender/mint scent. How relaxing and therapeutic was that! Totally was a pleasant surprise and in addition to that, being in their steam room opened up my nasal passages so I could breathe better. Loved it. Finally to dry off, we hit the sauna. Sauna was unfortunately small but stayed nice and hot. Only stayed there for a short while. I couldn't handle the heat too long since I already spent some time in the steam room and hot tub. Any more time spent in the sauna would have caused heat stroke!!! Thankfully I had my water bottle nearby and it came in handy. I'm not sure what their monthly rates are but I do know it's expensive. But if you can afford the monthly/year membership, the service, classes and amenities are worth the money. Parking is on the street if/when available or you could use the city garages nearby. Metered parking is about a dollar an hour with max two hour increments.

    New home. New gym.

Since Jaden has become the manager, the level of customer service has significantly deteriorated. The front desk in frequently not manned by staff. He projects the image that members are an annoying distraction from his laptop and I have personally witnessed him being rude and "judgmental" toward the members who have been loyal regulars. Not exactly the kind of "leadership" for a fitness center whose brand is a "Judgement Free Zone". Jaden's negative vibe is infecting the whole experience, simply undermining all that the franchise stands for. Other than this staff issue, the Planet is a great value for your workout dollar and while I have seen the cleaned and maintained better in the past, it is still a comfortable place for all to go to work out. It is just a shame that this location has joined the race to the bottom when it comes to the relationship it cultivates with its members.

Jordan, Lauren Craig and Daphne are awesome!! They spent all winter helping me with my cycling skills. They have about 20 bike trainers inside plus 3 treadmills, spin bikes and rowers. They also offer strength and agility classes. You can store your bike there during the winter months so you don't have to schlep your bike in your car on the days you want to ride. They work with training peaks so every ride you do is recorded with heart rate, calories, speed and distance. It really helps me analyze where I need to improve. They also have separate fun free events throughout the year. Girls movie night (ride while watching the chick flick of your choice) beer and bikes (ride while chugging a beer and eating snacks). These are just fun ways to break up indoor cycling rides. The fees are reasonable for unlimited rides. They also offer triathlon performance packages so you can incorporate swim bike and run with them. If you're interested in taking your training to the next level try precision multi sport.

Runners, swimmers, even the every day "non athlete" person just trying to be fit can find something here. I first came to know Precision Multisport through a winter triathlon training program I was a part of that utilized the facility for their Computrainer studio. Craig and JP have helped me train for multiple events, as well as aid me with my return to sport training after a hiatus due to injury. The studio has moved since I started trading there, and expanded. They now offer more training options, class times, etc. BASE Fitness, TRX, other training classes, a wide range of Computrainer classes, and individual trainers...all highly recommended. I truly have learned so much during my training here. The coaches are attentive, knowledgeable, and put up with me! I am not high maintenance, just hard on myself. When I go to Precision Multisport...I do not feel like I have to BE the best, I just am encouraged to TRY my best; and everyone has off days, and are well supported here. The experience, and the way the coaches are with clients, is HUGE! I don't feel like I am a part of a cookie cutter workout. Thank you PM! They often have special events and other fun things. They also put on a few of the best races in Chicagoland! I travel in from the city even to train!

I had previously been working out (rather intermittently) at the park district gym near my home. But needing guidance I sought out D21 fitness center because it was referred to me by a college friend who has been going there for years. Stephanie has been my trainer for a year and she is awesome!!! She walks the walk. Her degree is in Athletic training so she is extremely knowledgeable about fitness health. She is a runner (everyday she runs with a group rain or shine, cold or wet), but she is not a snob about it, nor is she judgemental. She meets you where you are, sets mutual goals for you, and helps you implement them. She keeps meticulous record of your workouts, and changes it up regularly to keep it interesting. You have the feeling that you are her only client! After an injury forced me to see a physical therapist she offered to confer with the therapist on how my exercises could be modified to prevent further injury. Before my vacation in February she emailed me a complete workout (with YouTube tutorials on how to do it right) so that I could continue my workouts in the resort's gym in the week that I wouldn't be there. Before giving you an exercise to do, Stephanie always explains its purpose, and she always demonstrates first (even if you've done it before) showing you both the right way AND the wrong way to do it. Because I only meet with her once a week, I would mimic what I did with her at home in another day of the week. And while I don't have a lot of the equipment at home, she showed me ways to compensate for that. She also let's me pick the workout music I like (I have a fondness for the 80s!) Stephanie makes working out fun! She laughs, and cajoles, but she is about the business of the workouts. She is very professional. She watches my moves, corrects when I'm doing something incorrectly, high fives me when I'm nailing it, and redirects. If I tell her I was sore the next day, she'll message me the day after that to see how I'm doing. If one day I'm not feeling especially talkative when I'm there, she picks up on that and our workouts are largely silent (except for counting my reps, and, yes, Cyndi Lauper in the background). My core is a lot stronger today, than when I first met Stephanie. I would recommend her to anyone who is interested in improving their fitness health. About D21. The gym is small, but has everything you could possibly need for a thorough and great workout. The sessions are private, though there might be the rare occasion where another client might be finishing up a session. Still it's enough room. There is a washroom, but unfortunately not a shower. There are also clean towels and filtered water so no need to bring. Great location too (right up the street from the Lucky Platter for a great post workout breakfast) and a Starbucks (with outside seating in warmer months)!!! Also plenty of street parking AND an adjacent parking lot. This gym seems to serve every age, and every body type from what I have observed. And the owner is pretty awesome too! The trainers all seem very happy. That must be a reflection on him.

I started with Izzy 2 years ago, and can easily say it is one of the best decisions I've ever made for myself and my health. Prior to this, I had never been very physically active and I had always been pretty wary of gyms, trainers, etc. When I set up an appointment to meet Izzy, I was very unsure about starting and worried about embarrassing myself when working out. From my first day meeting with Izzy, not only did my cautiousness/hesitancy around personal training quickly begin to fade, but I became excited about training with her each week and building strength. Two years later, and I see Izzy twice a week for personal training and wish I could go more often. Izzy's knowledge, infectious enthusiasm, and dedication make each training session fun and motivating. She continuously shifts and updates my workout program so that I'm always engaged, challenged, and building strength and new skills. She is fantastic at modifying exercises so that they best fit my body's ability. Overall, I've learned so much about my body and how it moves over the last two years, and I can now move and lift so much more than I ever have been able to (e.g. band-assisted pull-ups, push-ups, deadlifts, and much, much more). In addition to physical gains, I also feel more comfortable in my body and more confident in my body's strength and abilities. IzzyFit is also great because of the community involved in training with Izzy. She often has two people train together for each session (although they are each doing their individualized training program). This really builds a sense of community and support around working out. She also owns and trains at TruFit, which is easily the most welcoming, body positive gym I've been to. The trainers are friendly, experienced, and encouraging, and the clientele are diverse. The gym makes clear efforts to be inclusive and to support the community. As part of this, there are ongoing fundraising opportunities to support the gym in providing personal training scholarships. All in all, I highly recommend contacting IzzyFit if you are looking for a great personal training experience. :)
