My partner wanted to give her a try. So we went to see her 3-4 times over the course of 1-2 years. We didn't see her often for two reasons, she was often unavailable and we both have done a horrible job of following through. Most sessions were just casual talking. There didn't seem to be anything organized before we arrived. Some form of homework was typically given. The sessions were done as a couple... there was one session in which he was sent out of the room and she talked to me for 20 minutes. So I genuinely felt like she didn't get to know me, not her fault at all. We just didn't go enough times. Which brings me to my next point... most recently, my partner wanted us both to go again. He emailed her and she told him... there was no need to bring me that I wasn't open to forgiveness. I was shocked. This really hurt me and I really found this to be quite unprofessional because she did not reach out to me at all. Even if I did give off that vibe... it's just not true. I want forgiveness for myself but I've struggled getting there having been hurt badly in the relationship. Hence why we were there. Never in a million years did I expect to get written off for the very thing I wanted help with. I did reach out to her and her response to me was my "energy" never showed an interest to heal. And she wishes I would heal. And "I'll need to do that". So if you're an imperfect being struggling with unforgiveness... this is not a safe place to heal. I would strongly suggest going elsewhere. I've known Michael for most of his career and in various capacities, and I've seen his outcomes. He…read moreis easily the outstanding resource for OCD therapy in Houston. I don't know a more competent and effective counselor for that purpose, and I know many. I have referred my own clients to Michael, but also family members, all people I care deeply about and desperately want to see experiencing relief and success. He has never failed to deliver. I am especially impressed by Michael's demonstrated habit of referring out when a client's needs are outside his specialization. He could easily trade on his reputation to draw clients who might be better served elsewhere. But he is a true specialist. As to his manner, Micheal is wonderfully approachable and relatable. He's easy to know, and a pleasure just to spend time with. No expert ego issues. I will continue to rely upon him for clients experiencing the often devastating impact of OCD. He's the real deal (in a field where that's all too rare). I highly recommend him, and without reservation. If he's not the right guy for you, he'll know before you do, and he won't hesitate to steer you in the right direction.

I had been misdiagnosed for years and been through a few poor therapists before finally finding him & having him confirm my OCD diagnosis. I felt immediately comfortable talking to him about even those most uncomfortable things, and could tell he genuinely cared and understood. He has so much knowledge not only from being trained in ERP, CBT & ACT but also from his personal experience with having OCD. It's so relieving to have a therapist who truly understands the struggle and is living proof that you can recover and take back the power OCD has stolen from you. He has a positive attitude and is your biggest cheerleader in your recovery without promoting any toxic positivity or fake enthusiasm. He really helps you get to the root of your obsessions and compulsions, and understanding what to do with that information. He sends you wonderful articles and homework assignments to use as tools throughout the week and gives great book recommendations to supplement weekly sessions. I still have a lot to learn but I feel as if I've already progressed so much within the short time I've been working with Michael. I started out feeling hopeless, terrified, resistant, confused, desperate and depressed. I was worried I was beyond help, and overloaded by all my issues, especially having health anxiety during a pandemic.. Now I am learning so much more about myself, making sense of my issues, learning how to become comfortable discomfort, and getting closer and closer to the light at the end of the tunnel each day. I am excited to see how much further I can go. If you are unsure if you have OCD but suspect you might, he can spot it from a mile away & his assessment tools help identify what areas you are struggling in and may struggle with in the future. If you want a lukewarm wet noodle who empathizes with all your baggage, Joe Bak is not your man. However, if you want a therapist with a penetrating intellect who makes well-timed interventions with well-crafted observations, you need look no further. My wife and I go to him together and we find him brilliant along several veins: (1) Suggesting effective strategies to resolve issues, (2) serving as a referee in our discussions during therapy, and (3) maintaining a low-key, non-threatening approach. He's been very flexible in scheduling appointments and we've had no billing or other admin issues. The "brusque" manner that Ann N. bemoans I find to be a thin veneer stretched over a very dry humor. If I have any complaint about Dr. Bak, it would have to be that he has a tendency to be a bit late to appointments (he runs between two offices - we see him at the one off of Dairy Ashford near I-10).
