High prices, terrible service, added hidden fees even on top of the exorbitant charge for installation, and the staff was unconscionably nasty when questioned about the charges. Paid $100 to get a quote for a "site evaluation" for a fireplace insert replacement. This was going to be credited back if we got a new stove (which we fully intended to do). It's officially been six weeks since the "evaluation." Several emails and phone calls between my wife and I and still no quote. They obviously never intended to do the job, and now I'm out $100 for a 15 minute visit from a tech just to look at our setup. I really needed something for this heating season. I wish I had read the reviews on Evergreen Home & Hearth before engaging in a purchase of a woodstove to vent out through our fireplace chimney. The purchase process went relatively smoothly, and the install process was very quick to accommodate the technician's tight schedule. The first three weeks of operation went well, then the stove started smoking for no reason. The final straw was when the stove began spewing smoke from all sides filling our home with black soot. I called the store, and they said to open an outside door for more draft! I checked the chimney outside and saw evidence of creosote building up, and we had only had the stove for less than six weeks. The techs returned with the fireplace surround, measured the moisture in the wood we were using, and swept the chimney liner three times, gathering creosote on every sweep. Reminder that this was a brand new liner that was installed. Photos were taken and sent to the owner. We did not allow them to connect the stove back to the liner, because it was not safe to operate the stove. When we reached out to the owner for resolution to the issue we were facing, he sent it to his salesperson instead of contacting us himeself. We received an abrupt reply stating the issues being with a chimney that is virtually located on the outside (a pushout) from the exterior wall of the house, the stove would need to burn at high heat to compensate the cold interior of the chimney. This negates the entire reason we bought such an expensive stove that advertised an all night burn. I waited a few days for a conversation after the owner received the photos of the creosote buildup after only six weeks of use. No such reply happened, so I sent him an email again. I called him out on his lack of contact with us for resolution and the bad will it had created. We are now out over $6,000 with a stove that does not work well in the chimney environment we have. One would have thought they may have had this situation before in their business tenure, and to warn a potential customer. We proved the moisture content in the wood was in the proper margin, and further proved six weeks of operation demanded a chimney cleaning. Six weeks. We entered into this transaction in good faith as a solution for our winter heat. We are left with a stove we cannot use and a massive hit to money we can not afford to lose. I hope no one else falls into this situation - but I know better. Shame on us to be so trusting. I hope this review helps others to avoid the same hardship we have experienced. Follow up: Contacted the Ellsworth office today. The guy on the phone did a lot of TALKING and no listening. Same story and still never put us on a service schedule. I do not want them in my house, so will have to just figure it out myself. So, if you want to pay someone huge money and have NO service after the sale, this is your place. If you actually want communication and some service without having someone man-splain to you, find someone else or just do your own work. We would have been better off! read more

I was in dire need of fire brick to make a wood stove useable for rental guests. Better to go to a wood stove shop? Nooooo! I called and the sales person said they had plenty and they were 4.75 a brick or 8 for $28. I needed 8. So, I went on the day to pick them up, with guests driving up I-95, and the receptionist says they only have 5 and they are 4.75 each. I said I had called 2 days ago and the rep said there was a bag of 8 for $28. "Well, she was new." Was the excuse. No honoring the quoted price. Funny thing, the woman I spoke with had asked a man who helped her with the pricing in the background, which I heard him say and she repeated the 8 for $28. That VERY guy stood there and just blamed the poor new employee for HIS "mistake." No accountability. Then the receptionist went out back and found 2 more bricks and the Mr. Spineless says, "those are reserved for another customer." She grabbed them and said "I'm selling them to her." It was an amazing show of women covering for Mr Spineless wood stove man. Don't go here. There are lots of wood stove shops around that are honorable and trustworthy. read more

I do not recommend. The salesman loaded a tall 5ft~ crated heavy (about 400 lb)expensive wood upright into my empty van. He refused to lay it down, refused to open the crate so I could examine the contents, refused to lash it in securely. I had only bungee cords, and don't know how to secure heavy items from shifting. I expressed my displeasure. Very very risky driving with a loose cast iron stove lurching from side to side, back and forth, so i decided to return it. He refused to unload it, and so I, at considerable effort, pushed it out the back of the van, which seemed the safer alternative than driving further. (That's a hilarious scene to anyone who knows me.) His reaction: call the Ellsworth police and charge me with littering!( That's also very funny)---great use of police time, great customer service! By contrast the local appliance store, Browns, and the local hardware store, Hammonds, even Home Depot, load my van safely, and with patience and care. read more

I felt it necessary to report a negative and disturbing experience I had with one of the owners of Evergreen Home and Hearth. My interaction with him rose to a level of unprofessionalism and a lack of accountability on his part for his company's lack of transparency in explaining their return and cancellation policies. It involves a burner I had ordered for our gas fireplace. When I ordered the part, which cost $219.46, I was told it was in stock at the distributor's warehouse in NH and would be delivered in a week and a half. This part was critical to receive in a timely manor. Our existing gas fireplace had a cracked burner and was leaking soot into our room which is heated solely by the fireplace and could potentially pose a health hazard. It didn't arrive in a week and a half. I called numerous times only to be told to keep calling back. Finally after 2 1/2 weeks, I called and was informed they wouldn't receive it until May 27th. No mention of what happened to the one that was "in stock", just that it was about Covid and things were backed up. I requested to cancel the order. I was told it would be cancelled and I would receive a call back once it was confirmed. There was no mention of store return policies, no mention of restocking fees...nothing. The following Monday I checked my credit card account and noticed there were two credits each for $187.40 from Evergreen. I called immediately to let the store know of the double credit and I also inquired why the credit was not for the full amount of $219.46? I was told I was charged a 15% restocking fee. I said I was never informed of that policy and asked how is it possible to be charged a restocking fee for an item I never received and that apparently was never in stock? The associate kept insisting that was their policy, so I asked to speak to a manager. I was told the owner was in a meeting but they would leave him the message. I did not receive a call back that day, so the following day I called and left a message. The owner called back and I explained my situation. He said the delay was because of Covid and the deliveries were running behind. I told him I could understand that being a problem, but it didn't explain why I was told the burner was in stock and I was told I'd have it in a week and a half? He replied that it probably sold to someone else but he was still going to charge me a restocking fee...regardless. If the item was never in stock why was I being a restocking fee to begin with? He became more and more defensive saying they normally charge 25% restocking fee. He even made a sarcastic comment to the effect why was I complaining when I got credited twice?' I felt exasperated talking to him and felt I had no choice but to write this review of the company. It's unfortunate that I have to write this, but I now realize that it's not about the 15% restock charge, it's about principle, fairness and decency...something this company owner lacks. I hope this review will help someone else avoid the same experience I had. read more

I placed an order for a Hearthstone stove in the summer of 2022, which required payment in full with promise that I would have the stove in November. They sent a person to do a pre-installation site visit in September, which resulted in another order and pre-payment for duct materials. By mid-November I had heard nothing and went in to find out the problem and was told that the stove was coming at the end of November and was designated for me. They called me back and confirmed this date for delivery to the store but they could not install it until Feb. or March. Today January 3, I went in to see why I still haven't heard anything. I waited 15 minutes while the person on duty did research, could not reach the stove company and had no information on the state of my order. I commented that I was out over $5000 for six months and had nothing to show for it. Also, the previous assertion that it would definitely be in the last week of Nov. but installation could not occur until Spring was clearly not true. Her response was that I could get a refund. Time to submit a report to Better Business Bureau. Do not even think of doing business with these people. read more

We purchased a Harman P-61A pellet stove from Evergreen Home & Hearth. While we have no complaints with the pellet stove, we would never go back to Evergreen Home & Hearth. We went in on a Tuesday and indicated that if we could pick up the stove that upcoming Saturday, we would make the purchase. We were told that there was a stove at their Ellsworth store and it would be delivered to the Brewer store before Saturday so we could pick it up first thing Saturday. Based on that promise, we paid a deposit of $1,800. Come Saturday morning, the stove was still in Ellsworth and we were given no explanation, no apology, just a "you can pick it up on Tuesday". Really??? How far is it from Ellsworth to Brewer. They had 3 full days to get the stove there. They never bothered to call us to say that the stove was not going to be there. Luckily we called rather than just showed up on Saturday morning. After much display of unhappiness and dissatisfaction, Evergreen had the stove available to us that Saturday afternoon but never once apologized or explained why this happened. Harman pellet stoves can be purchased in Medway and other places in the State of Maine. After the purchase, I wrote to Evergreen setting out our issues and lack of satisfaction with the transaction and RECEIVED NO RESPONSE! The only thing that Evergreen has to set them apart from other dealers is their customer service. From my perspective, Evergreen has no customer service whatsoever.
